Ruth Lorenzo killed it with her impersonations of Amy Winehouse, Céline Dion and Tina Turner on Tu Cara Me Suena — the Spanish version of “Your Face Sounds Familiar”. Ahead of the Dec. 5 show, all of Spain wondered what would happen when she applied a beard and took on Eurovision 2014 winner Conchita Wurst. The answer? FIREWORKS.
Watch her interpretation of “Rise Like a Phoenix” below — and don’t worry if you can’t hold back your tears. Ruth also had a hard time pulling herself together during the rehearsals…
Ruth Lorenzo: Conchita’s “Rise Like a Phoenix”
It’s like 2014 again (not 1999 this time) — and the performance is uncanny. Ruth has a major advantage — she was in the arena when Conchita won! — and it really shows. As she stepped onto her tiny platform, the glitter and gold hinted that she would shine — and she did, nailing every single gesture, look and note Conchita gave us back in Copenhagen.
Covering Conchita is always a bold move. It’s not only about imitating a winner of the Eurovision Song Contest, but also the most iconic victor of recent years, who has also emerged as an ambassador for LGBT rights. No problem for RuLo, though: she was unstoppable onstage even though she had to deal with a very vocally-demanding song (given her naturally high-pitched voice). The live audience awarded her top marks — not enough to win the show, but enough to melt our hearts.
