Earlier today, the Wiwi Jury – our in-house panel of music unprofessionals, gathered in Valletta to discuss the contestants participating in Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2016 (MESC), the national selection for Malta. Today we look at Ira Losco with her entry “That’s Why I Love You”. Does this song prove why we love Ira Losco, or do we have a more love/hate relationship with the song? Read on to find out…

IRA LOSCO – “THAT’S WHY I LOVE YOU”

“THAT’S WHY I LOVE YOU” REVIEWS

Deban: Although this is the weaker one of Ira Losco’s two MESC outings this year, “That’s Why I Love You” is still a power belter. Laced with hues of country and western, the Maltese superstar bangs a compelling, longing, and endearing vocal. As she yearns for her subject, it reminds us of why we yearn for her.

Score: 7/10

George: This song is really nice. I think it’s a power ballad that could do very well in Eurovision. The interesting music in combination with her beautiful voice makes a quite powerful song that stands a high chance of winning MESC. After all, that’s why we love her.

Score: 8.5/10

Josh: There will be plenty of people that will root for this around the world. It’s giving me some serious Kelly Clarkson realness but for me personally it fails to make the impact on me like “Chameleon (Invincible)” does. It’s a pleasant enough song and I do think it’s a lot better than most of the other songs in MESC 2016 but I can’t see it winning.

Score: 6.5/10

Rezo: “That’s Why I Love You” has a huge amount of power and is in with a big chance to win Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2016. Ira Losco is a seasoned performer after finishing second back in 2002 with “7th Wonder” and this song stacks up with some of her best.

Score: 7/10

Robyn: This is like the verses of “Autumn Leaves” and a big Shania Twain ’90s drama chorus. I find it really boring, but yet I know there’ll be plenty who love songs in this style. Maybe Malta will cut their losses and chase after that country ballad niche.

Score: 5/10

William: This goes on a bit. It felt like six minutes of Faith Hill (yes, the one from the 1990s). That said, the melody works well with Ira’s fabulous vocals and with the right staging this could create major atmosphere. I prefer her entry “Chameleon”, but this will no doubt appeal to the Maltese — who have a history of loving schmaltz and sugary ballads.

Score: 5/10

In the Maltese Wiwi Jury we have 18 jurors but only have room for six reviews. The remaining 12 scores are below.

Anthony: 8.5/10

Antranig: 5/10

Bernardo: 7/10

Cristian: 7.5/10

Denise: 7/10

Luis: 6/10

Maria: 5/10

Mario: 5/10

Patrick: 9/10

Ramadan: 5/10

Renske: 8/10

Zakaria: 7/10

The highest and lowest scores are dropped prior to calculating the average score. This is to remove outliers and reduce potential bias. We have removed a low of 5 and a high of 9.

Really hope Malta choose the right song, Ira is great but her songs aren’t as good as they could have been, Maxine Pace is the winner for me!! 🙂

Sorry guys but this year, your jury is very harsh. You can’t even reach this singer, Ira Is The Best. And also you gave 2.47 to Lawrence Grey whose entry is so beautiful. Shame on you

Personally I pick this one over Chameleon. I was completely let down by that song. The 15 second snippet completely deceived me into thinking it was going to be an explosive entry. But nope. Went out with a whimper, not a bang. If Ira were to go to Eurovision with Chameleon, it would need a MASSIVE revamp. But just based on what is given right now, I prefer That’s Why I Love You.

Ira has come up with two fantastic songs this year. They are both on my top 3 and first I couldn’t decide which was better. Really different but both great songs. It’s really a pitty that one of her two songs must miss the final. My #3! 9/10

For Eurovision purposes I would choose Chameleon and not this. But I m sure this will be included in Ira s upcoming album.
