After the auditions in late November, Latvia’s LTV has just released the trailer for Supernova 2016. Included in the short video are millisecond snippets of the twenty acts that have made it to the final shows. Using our detective skills (and our very fast pause-button pressing skills) we have scoured the snippets for clues as to who will be participating this year. And we’ve discovered some familiar faces…

Markus Riva

Markus

We included Markus in our 2016 Latvia wishlist, in which you chose him as your favourite with over a third of all votes cast. This will be Markus’ third participation in Latvia’s national final – and after coming second last year (to no other than Miss Aminata Savadogo), he’s already the big favourite to fly the Latvian colours in Stockholm come May.

Samanta Tina

Samanta Tina

After taking a year off from Eurovision to compete in The Voice Lithuania, Latvia’s biggest diva is back in town. After finishing 3rd once and 2nd twice in the 2012, 2013 and 2014 national finals – as well as finishing second in our Latvia wishlist poll – could 2016 be Samanta’s year?

Madara Gregere

Madara

Whilst Madara has competed in the Latvian national final for Junior Eurovision, this year she debuts at Supernova. It is likely that she will compete with the song “You and I,” a recently uploaded drum & bass number clocking in at 2:50.

ElektroFolk

ElektroFolk

Last year’s third place finishers, ElectroFolk, will also be returning to the competition. They have confirmed that they will be singing the song “Miracle Drums”, turning down the crazy from their previous entry with an uplifting, drum-based ballad.

By looking at the 4 songs that will defineatly participate (Justs – Heartbeat, Dvines – Set It On Fire, Madara Gr?gere – You & I, ElektroFolk – Miracle Drums) and the two possible entries (two songs by Miks Dukurs), + the draw for semi-finals, I think Latvia has 99% chance of qualifying for finals, and good chances to get top10 if we choose the right songs. The best choice would be Justs or Dvines, from what is revealed, because I love both of the songs and they are in my playlist. This years Supernova will be eve better than last… Read more »

@kachijs & @alex thanks for the details. Had a look at the videos. Sounding great.

I guess Latvia’s change of national selection has made it better already!

Among the participants you can find also Justs with Aminata’s song Heartbeat . And two beautiful twin sisters Dvines with Set It on Fire.
Check it out on Youtube. Both are great!

Wiwibloggs if you look closely you’ll see Justs. Aminata is the composer of his song “heartbeat”. Share that song too

I rather like Electrofolk’s song. Problem is…it sounds like sooo many other Eurovision songs we’ve heard before. Despite that, I don’t find it bad at all.

Markus Riva is well known for his looks, hands down (the Krasiva Silno music video and that time when someone pulled down his shorts during a performance in a Ukrainian boy band competition). But I always thought he does well with a bass voice as his voice sounds deep. It is fine and he can at least sing in a bit moderate to high notes although it’s not powerful for me (be the judge in this sample video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KTbOw55XyI). Nonetheless, at least he has lots of fans even outside Latvia.

The only good thing about Riva is his metrosexual look, if you are into it. But he is not a good singer.

I didn’t like any of Riva’s previous attempts, so I hope he brings a good song this time.

No MNTHA? 🙁

Supernova 2015 was an amazing national final, so I hope 2016 will be great as well. I really hope Latvia can turn themselves into a Eurovision powerhouse, I’d love to see Riga host, it’s a beautiful city.

Checked the newest video by JUSTS, uploaded 1 day ago. Unplugged version of Heartbeat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjBNWUrwFl0

It HAS to be due to Supernova competition.

@Steven Keenan Fingers crossed!!! Hopefully, it is not just a random coincidence. Funny, also my first impression about the song was ‘current’.

@Oli that is extremely current and boy that first listen makes an impact! Hoping its an entry!

YEEEEES! Couldn’t recognise anyone from the list, but… the young singer JUSTS has qualified. I heard about him from Aminata’s (Last LV entry) Facebook post that she has written a song for this guy. And, ‘randomly’ he just uploaded a new song on his youtube profile. Love this piece of music!

This has to win, if this is the song he participates with.

@Steven: Yup. Which means the outcome could go any way. But given their record, it’s going to take another effort like Aminata’s to qualify. The 6 that came before her all failed to qualify.

I hope Samanta Tina’s song is good, maybe Latvia takes it all home.
