Earlier today, the Wiwi Jury – our in-house panel of music unprofessionals – gathered in Reykjavik to discuss the contestants participating in Söngvakeppnin 2016, the national selection for Iceland at Eurovision 2016. Today we look at EVA with their song “I See You”. Would we go sightseeing with EVA, or would we rather test our 20/20 vision? Read on to find out…

EVA – “I SEE YOU”

“I SEE YOU” REVIEWS

Josh: And here we have EVA! Today they’ve bought us an Icelandic lullaby called “I See You”. In all honesty, when I fly to Stockholm from Melbourne in May, instead of popping a Xanax or a Phenergan, I may listen to this to drift off into the land of forty winks. Next!

Score: 3/10

Mikhail: It is lovely. It’s pretty simple, but charming at the same time. The Icelandic language is one of the most beautiful languages I’ve ever heard. This song itself is a dream. I feel some childhood spirit in it that makes you fly above the clouds, close to the stars. With its atmosphere it reminds me of one song from a Russian children’s cartoon “Kolybelnaya Medveditsy” (She-bear’s lullaby), which is pure magic.

Score: 7/10

Robyn: I like that EVA look like a couple of mums who have got together to perform a sweet, gentle duet. While it’s a lovely song to listen to, it is a bit too unassuming to work as a Eurovision entry. People talk about this year’s Söngvakeppnin line-up being boring, but a song like this isn’t boring. It’s just kind of chilled out.

Score: 6.5/10

William: I’ll give them this: They took one idea and ran with it. For what seems like years. This becomes monotonous within seconds and ultimately it leaves me feeling like I am in a euthanasia clinic. It’s lovely and melodic but ultimately just too forgettable for ESC.

Score: 4.5/10

In the Icelandic jury we have seventeen jurors but only room for four reviews. The remaining thirteen scores are below!

I can’t believe you all rated this so low! This song was in my top 3 to win Iceland’s selection, it’s such a beautiful song. It reminds me of Finland’s entry in 2012 Når Jag Blunder, both were beautiful songs that had kind of folksy, dream-like qualities about them.

There is not a standout Icelandic song this year so why not?
This is not much worse than any of the others.
