The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — is still in Hungary reviewing A Dal performances. Today we listened to André Vásáry and his song “Why”. He might he asking why, but what was our response? Read on to find out…

“Why” reviews
Robyn: I’m all for male singers with atypically high ranges entering Eurovision. Cezar was a highlight of 2013, but “It’s My Life” was a great song. “Why” isn’t. It’s a very ordinary disco song. André doesn’t have the charisma to pull off the straightforward early bits, which results in the later male-soprano part feeling gimmicky in comparison. He’s obviously a talented singer, but this isn’t the right song.

Angus: This is excruciating. A bizarre combination of the full spectrum of Eurovision songs, it lunges between extremes of mournful minimalist balladry and wild vocal-scaling upbeat thumper. The only moderately tolerable part of this song is the bridge and then that is spoiled by unnecessary falsetto. Way too much going on.

Judit: The A Dal jury said “Why” is a typical ESC song and awarded high points, which was a surprise to me. I love the last part but the rest of the song didn’t leave any impression on me. The background and the violin are awesome, but it’s not enough to win a competition.

Luis: I wasn’t ready for Cezar’s existentialist brother to appear on my screen. “Why?” is too much for me: falsettos, fire, drama, violins: I can’t deal with it all at once. André isn’t really the best singer Hungary has, neither is he very charismatic. I fear this kind of song needs a big personality behind it to stand in front of Europe. While I don’t know him personally, at least, on stage, he doesn’t show any attitude.

Antranig: Apparently “Suus” and “Sognu” had a baby and then it got adopted by Cezar’s “It’s My Life” and entered into A Dal. It’s almost impossible to think of a group of three songs worse than these to compare something to. Fortunately, “Why” is better than all of the songs it reminds me of but that’s not saying much at all.
