Yesterday Finland’s Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu (UMK) 2016 kicked off with the first heat. Prior next Saturday’s second heat, the Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — got together and rated the next six songs. First up is Attention 2 with their song “Ready for the Show”. Are we ready for Attention 2’s show? Read on to find out!

ATTENTION 2 – “READY FOR THE SHOW”

“Ready for the Show” Reviews:

William: These ladies lift me up and they don’t let go! The defiant opening sees them stare their haters in the face before they unleash their unique brand of happy. The song speeds by in a blaze of digi-sounds and pulsating beats, all held together by these confident and insanely likeable girls. Bonus: There are two of them and they look alike! “Ready for the Show” is a proper earworm with an inspirational and catchy chorus — and one worthy of the UMK final.

Score: 8/10

Edd: The song has actually got a really great hook with massive potential. Unfortunately, the song is let down big-time in the production. If this had a proper dance-pop booming synth chorus it would be mega banger. Sadly it sounds like the song was recorded by a school orchestra, and leaves me completely cold. I really want to love them, but I just can’t.

Score: 4.5/10

Sam: “Ready for the Show”, strange as it may sound, bears a similar ringing to “Heroes”, and it’s catching fire with me already. I adore the twins’ slightly-accented English as they sing, and the Avicii-esque style of the song is made even more powerful by the inspiring lyrics. This has tons of potential, as long as the twins have showmanship.

Score: 10/10

Luis: This is too teen for me. The sisters have energy, but their song is not good enough. The “go-go”, “show-show”, “no, no” in the chorus makes it unnecessarily cheesy. Compared to other songs, even though this is a fun and memorable one, I wouldn’t let it go too far this year. And I say this year, because they have potential to surprise us in other UMK with a bang.

Score: 5/10

Robyn: These sisters are adorable and their song is equally cute. It has a good message – loving who you are – and the pre-chorus is especially catchy. When national finals tend to get laden with very serious songs, it’s nice to just have a well crafted pop moment that has lots of fun with its message.

Score: 7/10

Kristin: I’m not entirely sure that I’m ready for this show in particular. Those girls are cute and adorable, but I’m getting more JESC vibes than ESC vibes. Are they really and truly ready for the big game? I doubt it somehow. However, they get my kudos for being energetic and entertaining. They seem to love what they’re doing, which oozes out when you watch them and leaves you with a happy feeling. Give those girls a couple of more years, and they might blow us away completely.

Score: 6/10

Antranig: This song is absolutely perfect… for Junior Eurovision. These ladies are extremely talented but there are too many serious competitors in the competition for this to be a contender. I don’t see this making an impact on the adult contest but I think that within a year or two, they can come back to UMK with a much more mature sound and do their country proud.

Score: 5.5/10

Sinan: Yeees! They are ready for the show! I like the song, but especially the bridge part — it gives me chills. The song is very catchy and I think they will make the final of the Finnish selection with no problem.

Score: 7.5/10

Max: It’s been said before but I’ll say it again: This would be perfect for JESC. Cute, poppy and high-energy, “Ready for the Show” delivers all the sugary sweetness but not the edge and originality that will be needed for success in Stockholm. Perhaps keep this on hold until later in the year?

Score: 6.5/10

In the Finnish Wiwi Jury we have 17 jurors but only have room for 9 reviews. The remaining eight scores are below!

I really like this one. It kind of reminds me of Mini Viva, who released a couple of songs in the UK (look up ‘I left my Heart in Tokyo’). I hope it will qualify

So, there is always one song where the vocals aren’t great, and the song isn’t the best either, but I love it – and it’s this song. Attention 2 bring so much fun to this song, I don’t care if it’s perfect for JESC I could see it doing well in Stockholm with the right staging. It’s pure cheese, but gurl bring me a platter because I can’t get enough! These girls are certainly ready for the show.
