Rumours about who will sing for Greece at Eurovision blow with the wind. Last week it was Ithikon Akmaiotaton & Salina. Prior to that it was Mariza Rizou and Eleni Foureira. But today Greek newssite newsit.gr claims that it’s Europond — a seven-piece band that’s been around since 2001. .

Despite their long history they remain relatively unknown. According to newsit.gr, they will sing in Pontic Greek, which fits with existing rumours. The head of ERT, Greece’s state broadcaster, recently confirmed that the song will have a “strong ethnic and Balkan sound” with “lyrics referring to the refugee crisis and financial difficulties Greece is facing”. They aren’t taking it all too seriously though, as the song will still be “happy and upbeat”. Europond fits into that frame perfrectly.

Wiwibloggs have contacted Europond, but we’re still waiting for a reply.

Would you like to see Europond at the Eurovision? Let us know in the comments box below!

Well – Greece and Bosnia, all time qualifiers, seems pretty weak this year. I’m sure Greece will qualify somehow but they won’t do so well at final three-years-in-a-row again. I still have doubts if Bosnia and Herzegovina would qualify.

A final without Greece after Turkey had already left the contest? Will be strange.

It seems like the glorious years of the Eastern European-folk music is over. Now it’s West dominating.

Well…uh…hot mess really. The Greek gov wants nationalism in ESC so i guess this is…something a nation can get behind? In all honestly the outcome of Greece qualifying is really slim. I was hoping for a realy good song an singer…but guess not.
Guess its good though for countries like Czech Republic and Croatia.

One day we will get relegated and unfortunately the day is aprroaching. Their songs are very bad and honey, if u dont have any kind of experience you cant be selected INTERNALLY, because syriza thinks that eurovision is a joke. These kids should stay home.

Clearly, this group is very political. The second song in particular is all about how Greece was robbed — a common complaint of the radical left (in any country).

Hopefully they won’t be obnoxious. They can still go to Eurovision with a song about refugees, which doesn’t offend anyone. We’ll have to wait and see.

I AM- I’ve listened to both songs and they are very poor. The phrase ‘less is more ‘ comes to mind. I appreciate something different as much as the next man and I’m glad there’ll be a greek influence. My favourite Greek entry over the last eight or nine years was Watch My Dance followed by Alcohol is Free so I was fairly optimistic but neither of the songs has a hook or rythm or anything memorable -in a good way -to it. Of course these songs aren’t the entry (if this is the act) and there’s every chance the… Read more »

Just about acceptable if they do not rap in it. If they do rap, may not qualify.
