The Wiwi Jury will be travelling around Austria in the lead up to Wer singt für Österreich 2016 on February 12. Today, we travelled to Vienna International Airport and prepared to board our flights home but not before listening to our last song for review — LiZZA’s “Psycho”. Did we enjoy her dose of psycho — or are we checking ourselves into the nearest hospital? Read on to find out…

LIZZA – “PSYCHO”

“PSYCHO” REVIEWS

Antranig: I like what’s going on here — “Psycho” starts out with some airy wind chimes and works its way towards an edgy chorus. This belongs in a horror movie set in a dimly lit trailer park. Unfortunately the electric guitar pulls this song down several notches and in the end I’m left with something I like which would have little chance of qualifying. Send that electric guitar back to Albania where it belongs.

Score: 8/10

Bernardo: If this wins, they need to get rid of the electric guitar, it ruins an already so-so song. Lizza does have a good voice and everything sounds nice but it’s just that. It’s sounds good, not perfect and at the end of the day the entry is meh. It’s going to be lost. There are better entries than this.

Score: 6/10

Chris: I kind of understand why Lizza has tried to keep this song hidden — that guitar solo needs to be locked away. If you can take that bit away, you’re left with a pretty good pop-rock song from the ’00s, but it just all feels a little bit… poser-ish. The lyrics feel like they should all be a bit darker than they are. Essentially, it’s just not good enough, despite Lizza’s best efforts.

Score: 5/10

Luis: This chorus has some appeal, and Lizza’s voice is nice, but I don’t get many things from this song: from the name to the childish xylophone, there are many things that feel out of place. Apart from that, Lizza needs more strength, which is clearly not brought by the ’90s guitar solo. Is this girl related to Mélanie René?

Score: 5/10

Mikhail: In a song with such a name as “Psycho”, I would expect something fierce and captivating, but it ain’t that. It is just a boring ballad that quickly passes by. It doesn’t have anything special. Tt’s just bland.

Score: 5.5/10

Patrick: The title of the song is really promising, as it is not the usual Eurovision song title that we all know. Lizza’s voice is definitely a strong one, remarkable tone of it, though there are no real challenges for her voice. The song stays constantly the same over the three minutes and people will get bored. At least I did…

Score: 6/10

Robyn: This year I’m all about good choruses and this song delivers. The toy piano intro leads to quiet verses before the almighty chorus erupts. “Psycho” has a cool Nordic feel, and it’s unlike anything else in the Austrian national final. But that guitar solo! Wtf! It drags the song back to the late ’90s, making it suddenly sound like a rejected Robbie Williams album track. I have more points to give if this song turns up at WSFÖ without the guitar solo.

Score: 7/10

Sami: This song is very mystical and it has a dream-like atmosphere. But just like we had in Albania a couple months ago, the electric guitar solo ruins the song. The song needs an impressive stage performance and that will determine whether it could do well in Eurovision or not. Juries might like it, but viewers won’t remember it if the performance is boring and static.

Score: 6/10

William: When I hear the word PSYCHO I think drama, danger, madness and blood. This is far less interesting. The sound of an axe murder sawing through your front door while you scream? That’s memorable. The sound of Lizza singing a non-existent melody while a xylophone plays in the background? Less so. Seriously cannot remember a single note of this.

Score: 3/10

The electric guitar is the only thing that takes this song beyond the average mark. It really reminds me of something, like a girl group anthem. She stands a chance though I don’t think any of the Austrian songs (minus Elly) are ones I’d listen to regularly

Whoa, the entire song is a neat 90s throwback. And honestly, stop hating on electric guitars just because Albania overuses them. The usage of the guitar is totally appropriate here.
