Wiwi Jury Denmark edition: Veronicas Illusion with “The Wrong Kind”

The Wiwi Jury – our in-house panel of music unprofessionals – is continuing its journey around Denmark. Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2016 is just days away and we’re here to review the ten finalists. Earlier, we chilled out to Kristel Lisberg’s “Who Needs A Heart”. But as the night falls, it’s time to take to the dance floor. We’ve asked the DJ to put on Veronicas Illusion and “The Wrong Kind”. Is it the right kind of wrong? Read on to find out…

Reviews: Veronicas Illusion with “The Wrong Kind”

Edd: If Icona pop and Avicii were writing songs together in 2009, this would be the product. The song is very synth heavy, and I would like to see a little more variation in the production – but if they go big on the stage production I can get over that. And I’m talking latex, lasers and fireworks – times ten.

Bernardo: “The Wrong Kind” is fun and catchy, but it takes me back to 2001. Back then, this would have been an instant hit. Today? Not even close. Also, I can’t see how this will work out in Stockholm. It’s very Cartoon Network — and that’s not good at all.

Kristin: This is like the bastard lovechild of Nicki Minaj and Kesha, with Aqua acting as the surrogate mother! And this child is on crack! The rhythm attacks you, instead of comfortably making its way to your senses. I have to admit that I was distracted by Veronica’s cool stage name and the song’s title, but I was sorely disappointed. This annoyed the crap out of me. Undskyld Veronicas Illusion og held og lykke, men NEJ! This is the wrong kind of hot mess.

DMGP 2016: Our top three

Antranig: “The Wrong Kind” is an insanely catchy dance number. It’s is so fierce, fun, fresh and feisty. The lyrics are so catchy — it makes me want to go up to somebody and yell “get your sorry ass out the door”! If Veronica were to win, I can picture her belting this out while strutting down the Eurovision catwalk and getting the whole of Europe and Australia on its feet.

Deban: Cartoon Heroes died with Aqua at the turn of the millennium. We don’t need a Danish resurrection just yet — not without a Nicki Minaj-esque spit anyway. I get the appeal that this track may pack for the youths — but this is “the wrong kind” of representation. Music has already changed lanes.

Sopon: I’m having a blast with “The Wrong Kind”! Kesha, Krista Siegfrids, and Icona Pop all in one is a surefire recipe for success, at least in my book. I especially love the lyric “What are you waiting for? Get your sorry ass out the door”. It rings true for everyone, urging us to take all the opportunities life throws our way. It’s my personal favourite for DMGP, and I’d shout this song out at the top of my lungs with no shame any day of the week.

Mikhail: “The Wrong Kind” starts well. It’s fun and catchy. But then Nicki Minaj gatecrashes the party with “Stupid Hoe”. Why Nicki? Everything’s ruined. This would’ve been the perfect fit for a girly sleepover, if only Minaj hadn’t been invited.

Padraig: “The Wrong Kind” is an unadulterated explosion of sass and I love it! There’s no tiptoeing with Veronica. From the off we’re hit over the head with an onslaught of attitude and beats. This is the kind of unabashedly trashy dance floor stomper that Ukraine and Russia used to relish in. However, the studio version is so full of energy, that I worry how it will translate to the live stage. But if they can channel the record’s intensity, we’re in for a treat. Totally the right kind of wrong!

Robyn: A big, fun pop song with a really catchy chorus. I’m digging the Gwen Stefani/Kesha style of rap, adding a quirky touch to the song but without triggering the “OMG! Rap!” jury warning. But is it all a bit too full-on? The qualities of the song that would make it a club hit don’t necessarily translate to the more focused setting of Eurovision.

William: Veronica brings us plenty of illusions. Chief among them is that Denmark is the perfect place to sun in January, and that Kesha is competing at Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2016. This is frothy and fun yet their remains a distinct and memorable melody. Despite the “cheap” topic — baby, what are you waiting for! — the production actually sounds quite expensive — it’s like RedOne working with the Venga Boys and I adore it.
