Cutfather is in the house, and so are we! As Dansk Melodi Grand Prix heats up, we at wiwibloggs, and indeed all of Denmark are taking this national selection very seriously. We caught buses, trains and planes to be at the remote town of Horsens in Jutland. It is from here that we’ll bring you all the news, and developments leading up to the final.

The final dress rehearsal took place on Friday night, and we Instagramed everything. Below, you can watch snippets from all ten performances and read our thoughts and observations. Who’s your favourite? Who deserves to win? Let us know in the comments.

1. David Jay with “Rays of Sunlight”

A late evening show ushers in “Rays Of Sunlight”. The crowd was suitably warmed up for David Jays’ opener. Turning up in a garb suitable for a praise and worship session at the local synagogue, David’s act took off when he ditched his fedora. Power pop-although somewhat derivative, got the audience fired up for the quality acts to follow.

2. Simone with “Heart Shaped Hole”

Simone smouldered in a sparkling silver gown. Her fashion, as well as her camera angles, was on point! The cornerstone of her performance was a heart-shaped podium. Her vocals slayed throughout the multiple key changes, and when her podium rose on stage, she kept the audience gripped. That said, her two dancers were a little distracting.

3. Bracelet with “Breakaway”

Next up is Bracelet, who are rocking the stage with “Breakaway”. #DMGP #denmark #eurovision #melodigrandprix

The unexpected surprise of the night. Bracelet brought their A-game to the show. Sporting blue glitter, a little Emo realness, dated dance moves and lots of eyeliner, Bracelet got the arena clapping and dancing. But there is an over-reliance on Charlie Grönvall — the male lead vocalist. So much so, that the other band members simply fade into the background.

4. Sophia Nohr with “Blue Horizon”

The staging blew me away. It was a wilderness with lots of smoke, and a LED of her singing along to her own song. Fierce! Ethereal and spellbinding, this could be a contender for the win. The tribal drums, and harp strings provide a richer texture to this melody. Totally understated, yet so powerful. Sophia remains seated for most of her performance, but kept the audience totally engaged.

5. Veronicas Illusion with “The Wrong Kind”

It’s Veronicas Illusion singing about “The Wrong Kind”. #melodigrandprix #eurovision #denmark #DMGP

Video, jonka wiwibloggs (@wiwibloggs) julkaisi

A rush of teen energy bursts on stage. Veronicas Illusion come as a quintet of high energy teen chicks, think of a less-defined Spice Girls for a modern generation. Snappy choreography, and bundles of adrenaline, “The Wrong Kind” becomes insanely catchy on stage. The crowd responded well.

6. Lighthouse X with “Soldiers of Love”

These boys court star-power, and are incredibly telegenic on screen. However, they really need to focus on their vocal harmonies and choreography (or the lack of it). The staging holds no surprises either. Just a dizzying blue and white LED combo. “Soldiers Of Love” is a great pop number, but their delivery isn’t polished.

7. Kristel Lisberg with “Who Needs a Heart”

Kristel Lisberg is asking “Who Needs a Heart” at the #DMGP . #denmark #eurovision #melodigrandprix

Kristel is untouchable. Her vocal is flawless! On stage, she exudes confidence and lots of graft. “Who Needs A Heart” losing out to another entry would simply be a matter of taste. She appeals to all demographics, and remains a likeable character.

8. Jessica with “Break It Good”

Clearly a filler, but not a bad one. This reggae flavoured number feels somewhat out of place. That said, Jessica has an ease about her that draws one in. Her urban swagger may not measure up to Caribbean standards, but she’s passed the Nordic test.

9. Muri & Mario with “To Stjerner”

Muri & Mario are singing the only song in Danish in the final. #denmark #DMGP #eurovision #melodigrandprix

When talent is lacking, one compensates by contracting a pair of trapeze artists to rev things up. This entry is lame, but fortunate enough to have the running order in its favour. Driven with a domineering auto-tuned vocal sample, lots of confetti and the whole arena blowing up their mobile phones. It still falls short — very short!

10. Anja Nissen with “Never Alone”

Anja rocked it out in her black cocktail dress with polkadot sleeves. She can sing, she can dance, and she looks so damn fine — even with trainers on! Her set is full of gimmicks and energy. And although her song is borderline lacklustre, she infuses it with a vigour that’s difficult to match.

This is probably game over for Simone. She has no chance with this staging. Probably Anja Nissen will win. And not because she is good. She will win, because she is not very bad and she will perform at the end.

I think this is based in your own opinion, so you you are not objective… Clearly you didn’t like Muri & Mario when the song was released, so I don’t think you are being realistic when you talk about lack of talent amongst other things (like if it was the worst of the night…). In fact, I like “To Stjerner”, and I find some of your big favourites quite ridiculous (that large heart in the middle with that pink all around, seriously?) but hey, To Stjerner crappy… Maybe it’s not the winner but it’s far better than the most of… Read more »

The stage is so gross.
I liked it when Denmark use the stage with just a screen behind then.
But the last two years the stage has been awful like melodifestivalen.
Maybe they know something about the stage that SVT is keeping quiet?

From all picture’s i’m very impressed with ”blue horizon”!
Simone’s song is the best out of this bunch, but the running order isn’t in her favour.

Is Denmark still working with a superfinal? (3 songs qualify?)

Kristel could take this but Veronica really packs a punch of energy and could sneak into the super final

I like all the songs going in, but based on those snippets in my mind most improved is Veronicas Illusion and the opposite direction for Muri and Mario, which I had right up near the top of the list but based on that snippet, it’s down around 8-9.

Still has to be Simone, but there really isn’t a bad song in the bunch. Bad singers, maybe (hey M+M…) but wait and see what happens on the night.

Will Anja going last be an advantage?

I really want Simone to win, so I’m worried!

My favorite is Simone but please change the lighting colors, blue or maybe red instead of pink!!! Vote for heart shaped hole!
