The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — is in Romania, listening to the 12 semi-finalists of Selectia Nationala 2016. It’s time to meet Dream Walkers and review their song “Let It Shine”. Will our jurors let the boy band shine?

Dream Walkers – “Let It Shine”

Dream Walkers – “Let It Shine” reviews

Antranig: At the beginning, it sounds like we’re about to get a powerful emotional ballad, but my hopes are dashed as soon as they start singing. It manages to retain that emotional aspect but the emotions I’m feeling are more negative than positive and the ending is really annoying. Definitely not the song Romania needs.

Score: 2/10

Bogdan: “Let the music in your heart”, the boys croon, but sorry, no can do. Not this music, at least. Not just the song and arrangement are terribly dated, but also the style of singing, which seems stuck in the age of Color Me Badd. Too, ahem, badd, because the guys can sing beautifully, their harmonies are to die for, and the four voices should sound great together live. But not for 2016. (And don’t even get me started on the sappy lyrics!)

Score: 2.5/10

Deban: “Shine” with or without a prefix should be forbidden at the Eurovision Song Contest due to its excessive usage. Secondly, this pseudo-operatic type of singing is an ugly throwback that nobody needs to hear anymore. However, despite my seemingly harsh criticism, “Let It Shine” does contain a few dazzling moments, and the best harmonies this year.

Score: 6/10

Luis: I’m sorry to break it to you Dream Walkers, but the mandatory post Il Volo snoozefest boyband has already been chosen in Denmark. It’s such a shame when this kind of amazing opera voices get lost trying to do a pop song that ends sounding like the soundtrack of a bad romantic comedy from the 90s. Ah, and those electronic organ trumpets must be killed with fire. And the guitar solo has to be returned to Albania!

Score: 1/10

Robyn: This joins Lithuania’s “United” as another attempt to resurrect the 1980s inspirational ballad genre in this year’s national final season. To which I say no. This is never OK. The worst thing is that Dream Walkers were assembled specifically to sing this song for Selectia Nationala. They deserve so much better!

Score: 2/10

William: Forgettable, disposable, cheesy — we’ve been here before, like 15 to 20 years ago. It’s like a bad version of Il Volo mated with an Il Divo cover act. PS: We don’t need yet another Eurovision song with the word “Shine” in the title.

Score: 2/10

Just a few words to describe it: stinky-poopy. Enough said.
