Australia is just one day away from announcing their act for Eurovision 2016, with fans expecting the announcement will confirm Delta Goodrem as Australia’s act for Stockholm. But shockingly, Delta has denied involvement in Eurovision, while a leading Australian newspaper has named Dami Im as the act for Sweden.

Delta has long been a favourite to represent Australia at Eurovision 2016. As well as being the bookies’ favourite, fans speculation has been intense, with fans noting that Delta’s calendar was free at Eurovision time.

But replying to a tweet by Buzzfeed Australia today, Delta confirmed her fans’ worst fears.

So if not Delta, who is SBS sending to Stockholm? Well, The Sydney Morning Herald is saying it will be another fan favourite – Dami Im.

Dami has been on our radar since 2014, when she won our very first poll asking who should represent Australia should they ever compete at Eurovision, and she’s still a fan favourite, again winning our most recent poll on Australia’s act.

Dami got her big break on series five of The X Factor Australia in 2013, which she won. Week after week, Dami wowed the judges and audience with her killer vocals, and harnessed her quirky style for some truly show-stopping performances.

She’s since had a series of hit singles in Australia, and in 2014 represented Australia at the ABU TV Song Festival in Macau, China – essentially a less glamorous, non-competitive Asia-Pacific version of Eurovision.

Broadcaster SBS has been dropping a series of Instagram clues, which point to the identity of their 2016 artist. Earlier clues suggest a vegetarian who plays the piano – which describes both Delta and Dami. The latest clue identifies someone who enjoys tea, hazelnut chocolate and listening to Guy Sebastian, who, incidentally, is represented by the same record label as Dami.

So who will it be? There’s only one way to find out – tune to to the big announcement tomorrow, when Conchita Wurst will reveal Australia’s act for Stockholm. SBS will stream the event on their Facebook page, starting from 11:40 CET.

What do you think? Would Dami make a good choice for Australia? Should SBS have gone with Delta? Share your thoughts below.

Marshpan :- It’s just a bit of fun, I like a good puzzle. The clues seem to fit Samantha better than Dami, that’s all. Though I could not get the clues to fit Dami. Some more explanation :- I think the piano is obvious but may also imply that it is a singer/songwriter. The handwriting seems “girlie” so a female Singer/songwriter. Samantha has also said she likes eggs and avocado for breakfast, there is tomato and avocado on the plate. Lastly, Samantha performed live in January at the Australia Day Concert, so they have had a chance to check her… Read more »

ALL OF THE CLUES FROM THE SBS (+some hilarious answers): http://www.sbs.com.au/programs/eurovision/article/2016/03/03/follow-trail-eurovision-clues-australian-artist-2016

I really do think it’s Dami, one of her Instagram posts a few hours ago shows that she’s just had her nails done to look quite fancy… Is she going anywhere important tonight?

Nice! I’m hoping her song ends up sounding like something along the lines of “Super Love”, which is a great track.

(sorry for the double-post, really I am) @EugeneESCUK are you sure that the milky tea didn’t have soy milk or almond milk, both of which are vegan alternatives? I don’t think we can rule out Courtney Act or The Veronicas just yet… after all, it /is/ Mardi Gras and those acts are very intertwined with the LGBT+ community here in Australia. However, my bet still is on Dami… She recently posted a photo of her recording in a studio onto her Facebook, not to mention pretty much every poll about potential artists has her winning in an obvious landslide… In… Read more »

Odds for Samantha Jade are looking unlikely… I just recently heard on Australian radio that she’s currently doing promotion for her guest role in Home and Away, so I don’t know how her schedule would work with the time and effort required for Eurovision… Anyone have any clue as to how this would potentially play out? I don’t pay much attention to our soaps, so I haven’t got a clue there.

Looks like it is SAMANTHA JADE. You’re right Eugene! The chocolate & tea plus she’s really good friends with Guy Sebastian. He mentored her to victory on the XFactor too!! I think she will be FAB! Great songer and dancer. She’s currentlt in a promo trail for her album Nine.

I bow to Eugene. That’s clever and deductive reasoning at its very best. 🙂
N.B. That’s not a confirmation – i have no idea who Australia will send this year.

somehow this makes me feel inclined that it won’t be Dami… :/

Well would fit. Another Casting show participant 😉 What a year!

I think the first clue that SBS gave us tells us it is NOT a Vegan as there was a milky coffee, so that rules out Sia, The Veronicas and Courtney Act amongst other Vegans. Guy Sebastian and Conchita are both signed to Sony and it is most likely that the artist will also be signed to Sony. So that leaves maybe Dami Im, Jessica Mauboy or Samantha Jade. I don’t think any of them are vegetarian, so that could be a “Red Herring”?!?! Samantha Jade has said she is obsessed with chocolate!! She also said she would love to… Read more »

In a few years we should re-name Eurovision into the Grand Casting Show Final. So many countries send X-Factor, The voice or whatever winners, its getting predictable 😛

I’d love for Dami Im to represent us, I’m relieved it’s not Delta. As much as a great artist as she is, I didn’t really want her as a eurovision act… The Veronicas….eh, no. They had a few hits back in the 00s, but apart from their latest album which brought them back to attention for a bit last year (and that stellar performance w/ jess mauboy and tina arena at the aria awards) they really aren’t that popular here anymore. The most current acts would be Troye Sivan or Conrad Sewell but I don’t like either of them, so… Read more »

@Bella I’m with you!! Dami Im is a great singer but her discography is not on par with Mauboy, Sebastian, Delta & The Veronicas. ESC is about song not just ‘killer vocals’.

My secon choice would be The Veronicas. They’ve got some European flair in them like Guy and Bella Paige. Apparently they’re of Cypriot descent. Their latest album spawned some #1’s and they’ve toured USA, Canada and some parts of Europe. They’re quit a big name in Australia.

Figures! she’s too afraid of the prospect of not qualifying yet in The Voice AUS her team always loses.

I am Australian and I really dislike Dami Im! I hope she isn’t our act ???? If I could pick a dream contestant it would be Troye Sivan ???? When is it being announced Aussie time!!??!?

Cue my sigh of relief when I found out that Delta said that it isn’t her… omg… (Though to her credit, she was quite courteous and diplomatic about it, which I appreciate greatly.) If we /had/ to send in a pop act, it might as well be Dami Im. Back in 2013 when she was in X Factor, nearly every one of her performances went onto the front page of Youtube Australia, with a lot of support coming from overseas -Brazil, Chile, Spain, the UK… -I was shocked initially, but at the time, I was drawn into liking her, despite… Read more »

Sorry, didn’t notice the link was already provided in Josh’s article, but given that it’s SBS’ choice and its inclination towards diversity and inclusiveness, Dami IM sounds like someone who matches that profile, but the SMH opinion piece puts a damper on Dami’s chances and is being somewhat reserved about the whole idea.

@irish 11:40am CET Thursday

I’m not anti-Dami and she definitely fits with SBS’s multicultural raison d’etre, but I had finally reconciled myself to Delta! Oh well, Dami it is.

If we stick around beyond this year, I’d like us to consider something a little bit less pop given the strength of the Australian music scene beyond the commercial worls (and our weakness in that world, it has to be said) but I definitely think Dami Im can do us proud.
