Let’s be frank y’all: Frans is clearly the hot favourite to win Melodifestivalen 2016 with his mellow tune “If I Were Sorry“. And now there’s more fuel in the fire as he is storming the Spotify Viral charts from Taiwan to Uruguay.
Frans has placed in the top 3 in Switzerland and Taiwan, top 10 in Iceland and the top 40 in Uruguay, the United Kingdom, Spain, Norway, France, Denmark, Turkey and Germany.
Frans has also reached the Top 30 on the Global Viral Chart. The hype and attention surrounding him is on par with that of Måns Zelmerlöw and Loreen in 2015 and 2012.
With his tenth position in the running order, Frans looks set for success and his odds continue to shorten.
You can watch the final of Melodifestivalen 2016 live on SVT Play here.
Oh, what a coincidence! the swedish broadcaster manages to spam the also swedish plattform Spotify, to screw us to buy their merchandise. This will be a case study in upcoming years for sure.
Actually this Albin Lee Meldau track “Lou Lou” is pretty good. I’m just amazed to see an artist with such a tiny profile at the top of Taiwan’s Viral chart. Perplexing.
This Taiwan Viral chart is bizarre. Another Swedish artist, Albin Lee Meldau, holds the number one position. I mean… who?
Interestingly, Molly Sanden’s “Youniverse” is at number 40 on the Spotify Taiwan Viral chart. No other Melodifestivalen tracks though. Most people here do not know about Eurovision, although Conchita did raise its profile considerably especially among the LGBT community. I reckon these hits for Frans and Molly mostly come from foreign Eurovision/Melodifestivalen fans.
I live in Taiwan and Frans is now at number 7 on Taiwan’s Viral chart but he’s nowhere to be seen on the overall top 50 chart. Pretty exciting for a Eurovision song all the same but that doesn’t mean he’s getting much exposure here.
I just don’t understand why poeple seem to like this crappy entry. It’s clearly not original, lyrics are quite negative, mleody quite monotonous and vocally Frans can be labelled as ‘very weak’.
how can we be sure that these viral top charts are not coming for a group of ESC fans in taiwan or elsewere. our group in the philippines is about 100++. if we could we can play san marinos song bunch of times and it will be a ‘viral hit’
@Charles
Haha! Thank you for that, couldn’t be more through. I do think Sweden is heading for their 7th victory tough, and the eurovisionfans knows it 😛
dutchie : Viral Charts seems like a random chart. Nobody knows the Dutch and the Swedish song for Eurovision in France except the fans and some guys on music forums.
I am laughing my a** off with everybody here going dramatically angry or sad trying to understand why a song like “If I Were Sorry” won in Sweden and to add more anguish to the club-banger-mind-oriented fans why is the song charting so suddenly on Spotify? My question is: what are ESC-bubble fans missing that the rest of the planet seems to be hearing and feeling? LOL Since I am not a fan of the song, seeing it winning actually does not affect me that much as I prefer to see Sweden not winning again or things are going to… Read more »
@GG
I don’t usually buy into the annual plagiarism accusations, and usually melfest songs do just enough to be similar but just different enough from other songs, but that bridge is identical, note for note identical.
The song is clearly a copy of “Catch & Release” by Matt Simons
I don’t like the song at all…
Östenrike
Oh good call! Maybe the Netherlands will grab it this year then 🙂 I wouldn’t mind that, I like their entry this year and it would give us a break from Scandinavia ???? Amsterdam 2017
Congratz, Frans, but that is roughly 100 points less than Mans had last year.
Not surprised it won. The juries were definitely pressured to give top marks to Frans or they’ll be some uproar with the Swedish public like in 2013 when YOHIO got 0 pts while placing #1 on televotes
Darren, guess what, the Netherlands are my favourite this year yet again! (four years in a row now!)
We Austrians always have a soft spot for the Dutch, but their song this year is really the best so far.
Justs had good performance in 1st round of Supernova and this took a hype. The same situation is with Frans.
Östenrike
Agreed! It has become very Germanic whereas the last decade was Slavic. I guess we need just need the Netherlands to win and then we will have the whole set of Germanic countries 🙂 it would be nice to see the contest move a little bit more West for a year or two though, like France, Spain or dare I say, Ireland but I don’t know
Of course final performance of Frans is much much weaker than in semi final.
Maybe it’s time for anti-voting against Frans for Ace Wilder?
50% is too many for jury
@Darren, Eurovision has become very Germanic. Since 2009 six wins for Germanic countries.
The split jury results already indicate that Sweden is not likely to cash in another victory. Euphoria and Heroes sailed through with juries and televotes alike.
Such a boring song. It’s album filler material, not a song to send to Eurovision to actually conquer Europe internationally..
This time everything will be about performances on stage in Stockholm. Only then we will see favorites.
@MTD I wouldn’t say Eurovision has become Western once again, because countries like Portugal, Spain, Ireland, United Kingdom, France, Switzerland are all Western European nations and they do be severely underrated, like you said with Croatia, if Nina was representing Norway or Denmark it would do well, the same with these, if Nicky Byrne, Barei, Joe and Jake etc was representing Nirway or Denmark they would be fan favourites by now. So Eurovision isn’t only favouriting Western countries, it’s only the Nordics that are benefiting this decade. Germany and Austria winning in 2011 and 2014 was just a fluke, these… Read more »
For me “If I Were Sorry” clearly not presents the same level as “Euphoria”, “Undo” or “Heroes”. He can perish in Stockholm in televoting.
Saraha, Ace Wilder and Samir & Viktor are the best options for me.
Ok, wiwi, we got it.

I don’ t like this song.. nothing special
it nothing to do with going viral its because so many people in sweden are listening to the song so it will look like its going viral
If Frans will win tonight this will be fault of haters of Samir & Viktor because only they had chance to fight against Frans due to good charts and great potential in televoting.
1. The title is misleading. He is not storming spotfy charts but VIRAL spotify charts
2. The numbers are wrong. But even if they are right, this is not such a success. Several unknown songs are in the same charts in higher position. It needs some ESC fans in each country to share the song.
@Denis – the contest is already a parody: copycat song winner from last year, Swedish writers all over the contest, quite repetitive and stupid songs en masse, nothing extraordinary, jury votes that cancel songs not awarding them just because songs are competitors for first place (see 2015 (Italy) and 2014 (in case of Armenia) for comparison). People voted Italy last year and they felt cheated. Really. And you can’t (you or anyone else) deny it by simply stating “get over it, Sweden won fair and square”. It didn’t. And the Western countries have the ESC back in their yard since… Read more »
Thank God he hasn’t charted in my country, I’m way too patriotic to be ashamed of our national taste in music.
WTF Uruguay, I feel betrayed.
