Joe and Jake UK Eurovision 2016

At the end of February, the BBC held its first national selection for Eurovision since 2010. Amid a fair level of hype, especially within the Eurovision fandom, six acts competed in Eurovision: You DecideThe Voice UK alumni Joe and Jake won with their song “You’re Not Alone”. And today the BBC treated us to the official video for the song.

JOE AND JAKE – “YOU’RE NOT ALONE”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adeoOVHECBo

The video is relatively simple compared to the videos from the other Big Five nations. Spain‘s Barei journeyed through Sweden, Germany and her homeland in her clip. And France‘s Amir included atmospheric cuts of young people overcoming their adversities to bring the song’s message to life. The United Kingdom have chosen to let the boys do what they do best — they perform on stage and vogue to the camera. There’s a whole heap of lens flare and fish eye lens work, which helps bring out the Britpop feel of this song.

About Joe and Jake

Joe and Jake met on The Voice UK in 2014 where they both received mentoring fromm some big stars. Joe was part of (former UK national final hopeful) Rita Ora’s team, performing “Lights” as his audition song. Jake, meanwhile, was mentored by Will.i.am, performing Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” in the blind auditions. Joe made the second week of live shows, whilst Jake was eliminated in the knockout stage. The two have now joined together to make an attempt at Eurovision.

The boys have great charisma and perform and harmonise well together. Their time on The Voice UK has absolutely shown us what they are capable of. Here’s hoping they bring their A-game in Stockholm!

To be honest, yes the song is dull. But in Eurovision the jury and public look at EVERY DETAIL. This means from vocals / Choreography to dress and staging / gimmicks. Mans Zelmerlow won Eurovision hugley due to the staging. Children in the Universe could have done better if molly simply “Acted as herself” Like she did in the BBC preview video we saw of her. If the boys show more energy and passion for it on the night they will go far!

This was among the better half of the contestants in the UK final, but that’s not really saying much. They can for sure sing. But this song really gives them nothing to work with. The only remarkable feature is the guitar line which comes in somewhere in the latter half of the song. If Denmark makes the final (which they probably will), this song’s in trouble.

I prefer Electro Velvet too. Not the song, but the whole package. This is dull. Last year at least at a watchable entertainment factor. This is a TV show.

This should finish above a lot of the finalists from semi-final 2.
I think 15-20 is possible!

The problem is that once you eliminate all of the really awful songs from the Semi Finals, the UK become probably one of the weakest entries in the Grand Final.
Without good staging, this is going to fall flat as a pancake. Still, at least Joe & Jake will get noticed somewhere. 🙂

best song since 2009 for the UK. Should be on the left-hand side of the scoreboard. There are people who honestly believe that they can’t better Electro Velvet’s score, or Bonnie or Engelbert and thats pretty ridiculous. It’s the UK’s most modern song for a while, and currently in my top 3 personal rankings. Just because the majority of the hardcore more visible eurovision fans have a niche music taste, doesn’t mean the 200 million + other voters have the same. Britpop is still popular, I know many who like this type of music through FIFA soundtracks, etc. There isn’t… Read more »

Its probably simple because BBC is saving the rest of the money towards staging. I hope that is the reason 😉

@eugine- do you know when we will find out which position the UK will sing in and will it be a draw to decide?

Could they not be bothered to give it a revamp? XD But seriously I have come WAY around to this. I’d give it probably a 7/10, but I still feel like this is some rejected Coldplay or Kodaline song. I think I’m the first to say this…..but……

….I prefer Electro Velvet….

Agree with that their favorite this year wili be Sweden, Malta and Azerbaijan. We wili read almost every day what Frans, Ira and Samra do .
And Michal Szpak for me sound so much better live than in video, it si great to see and hear. 80 % of singers this year (where we don t have national final) wili be sound not good live especially Azerbaijan….

Michal Szpak also release video for his song, but it seems that Wiwi stopped to care about Poland just because their favourite didn’t win…

I didn’t realise before but I can’t get it out of my head now. I think you’ve hit the nail on the head – a children’s song. But we’ve also got Frans’ song for that tbh.

Off topic slightly- could someone please tell me when and how we find out what position the UK will sing in?

I think the video gives some ideas of how the song will be staged. I love the ending. It really gives the last chorus some power and lift and it shows that ultimately this song is a lot of fun. I first thought how can they replicate this with only 4 other people?! But then … I thought… They could jump into the audience and everyone is jumping around them as they move forward to end the song. I have been a huge fan of Eurovision since 1996 and I can actually say that I think this has a chance… Read more »

18th to 22nd…..sorry. They try hard, are very puppy-like, but a few 1s and 2s are not gonna get them on the leaderboard. As for Russia, “contrived” is the key word….it is a quite horridly cynical piece of musical manipulation that sounds like a Top 3 from 2002……doe not deserve favourite status…(but neither does Frans in my opinion!)

Please don’t mention Russia .. That entry make me sick …
“Thunder and lightening its getting exciting”
Horrible contrived entry … It would be a travesty for Russia to win ..

It’s a good song. Given how many power ballads and deconstructed electronica we have this year, it stands out as one of a handful of proper pop songs. It’s not going to win, but stands a chance at doing well.

I am sorry to say but for me it feels like a children’s song, something UK has been doing a little often. The chorus is energetic and and it is easily the best part of the song, but I am missing anything special. 27th overall for me which will probably make it near the very bottom in the final.

Its so cute that Joe & Jake are trying their hardest to produce a well put music video. Sadly, there wasn’t a huge budget, but I feel like their performance makes it up. They are not going to be in the Top 10, I predict a place between 15-20. Best of luck to those cuties!

I like it 🙂 Quite a happy song. It doesn’t smell top 10, though. Maybe too cutesy/childish to win. But enjoyable nonetheless. It is good to see all Big 5 having solid entries this year.

Come on, friends from the UK, don’t be so pessimistic.
Anyway, this song will get some of my votes on the big night.

The U.K. Is going to do better than last year. That isn’t going to be hard. However, whilst not top 10, unless the staging is amazing and the other countries are bad, I predict it’ll do midfield – bottom left/top right of leaderboard. Quite frankly I think us Brits would be happy with that. Disappointed that the song wasn’t revamped, but hey, they show passion and it stands out from the Europopish songs so it’ll do well in that sense.

I would say it deserves a top 15 place..

Things are certainly looking good for the UK. Obviously we wont (cant?) win, but the UK will do a lot better than most think- a top 10 I predict!
