Georgia’s Lizi Pop — real name Lizi Japaridze — wowed us at Junior Eurovision 2014 with her voice and her deep understanding of human rights. She told us that her song “Happy Day” was a call for all the children of the world to fill their days with joy and happiness — and she wasn’t doing it as a one-off. She’s keeping that positive message alive with her latest single ”Our Future” featuring wiwiblogger Deban Aderemi. That’s right. Deban, who was recently touring the Caucuses, stopped by Tbilisi to feature as a guest artist on this feel-good, kid-friendly track.
Composed by her long time collaborator Giga Kukhianidze and written by Lizi Pop herself, the song is an optimistic ode to building bridges and self-empowerment. The simple melody has an R&B edge, which really comes to life in the spoken word segments. The music video, shot by Ramaz Gunava, cuts between shots of the pair throwing down in the studio and dancing before an urban vista (aka, a concrete wall).
Deban says that Lizi, who has been a close friend of wiwibloggs for several years, is a truly collaborative artist.
Shortly before my trip to Tbilisi, Lizi sent me the first draft of ‘Our Future’. I liked it immediately, but I felt that the bridge could be strengthened with a rap. I suggested this to her. She agreed but explained that she didn’t know of any English speaking rappers in Georgia. She then suggested that I do it myself.
I assumed that she was being playful, and simply laughed it off. But she was serious! My flight landed in Tbilisi after midnight, and there was Lizi Pop waiting with a full camera crew. I had no idea!
ABOUT LIZI POP
Lizi Pop represented Georgia in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Malta with the song “Happy Day”. Our in-house jury absolutely loved it, with one juror writing:
Do I care that people compare this to ‘Wrecking Ball’? O deli-deli-deli-noooooo. I just love this. It’s sweet, charming, easy-on-the-ears and has an anthemic vibe that makes me want to stand up and wave a lighter. Stellar song from a delightful performer.
She has followed that performance up with single after single, and emerged as one of Georgia’s most popular young singers. She also presented Georgia’s JESC 2015 points in Sofia.
