After the incredibly mixed reaction to Frans winning Melodifestivalen 2016 last weekend with “If I Were Sorry”, Sweden’s broadcaster SVT has released the full voting results of all four semi finals, as well as Andra Chansen and the Grand Final. As it turns out, Melfest debutants led the race all season, with Robin Bengtsson, Wiktoria, Lisa Ajax and Frans winning the four semi-finals. Some other acts, most notably ISA in Andra Chansen, came so close to advancing that it’s insane. Now like true rap artists, let’s break it down…
Semi Final One
The first semi final of Melodifestivalen 2016 kicked off with a bang in Gothenburg on February 6. Six acts competed after Anna Book was disqualified because her songwriters inadvertently plagiarised their own song that had been entered in the national selection for Moldova in 2014. Robin Bengtsson walked away with gold after his performance of “Constellation Prize” with Ace Wilder coming in second with “Don’t Worry”. Things were tight between Ace and Samir & Viktor in the first round of voting, but her big light box helped her extend her lead in the second round.

Semi Final Two took place in Eurovision 2013 host city Malmö, and our own William and Tobias were on the ground. The top three of this semi final were particularly close. Wiktoria claimed first place with “Save Me”, with David Lindgren coming in second with “We Are Your Tomorrow”. ISA finished a very close third with “I Will Wait”. In fact, the difference of 22,676 votes between ISA and David marked the closest gap between Andra Chansen and a spot direct in the final.

Semi Final Three was held in beautiful Norrköping on February 20. Surprisingly this semi final saw Lisa Ajax with “My Heart Wants Me Dead” take the top spot over eventual runner-up Oscar Zia with “Human”. Saraha almost lost her spot in Andra Chansen to SMILO. Her advantage of 11,411 votes was the closest margin among all Andra Chansen qualifiers.

Semi Final Four, held in Gävle on February 27 was a little more of a predicable result. Frans with “If I Were Sorry” smashed the results, being the first song of the contest to gain over one million votes. Molly Sandén with “Youniverse” sat comfortably in second. Panetoz filed in closely in third place, with Dolly Style only narrowly beating Eclipse into fourth place.

The battles in Andra Chansen were quite mixed in terms of result. Both Samir and Viktor and Panetoz slammed their rivals, but on the flip side, the other two battles were much closer to call.

So given the app vote in the final this year alot of people voted 5 times as oppsed to 1. So reduce everyones score by 80% you can figure out a “basic” result and compare it to previous years figures.
Frans would still obviously win but with an average score of 363,139. So a pretty good score but nowhere near as close as Mans or Loreen.
Nearly 700,000 votes more than the runner up is quite extraordinary as it’s possible to vote five times for each song with the app. Even I voted for more than one song, and mostly everyone using the app does. (I voted for Frans, Robin, Oscar and Molly) Without the app Frans would have won even bigger becuase people who votes by phone usually cast a vote one time and as he was the overall favorite among us swedes. I wonder why isn’t anyone thinking already on MF 2017 considering the average quality in the music showcased this year and that has everybody going bananas and nuts in all kinds of dramatic ways … for no reason seriously … and hating on a 17 year old kid as if this a WW3 … I mean really? I believed in Russia when this country had good songs (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015). Now we have 2016. Nothing lasts forever.

I think Lisa and Robin winning their semis were most unexpected, they both had fantastic songs but…the runner ups were better imo.

@MTD, I’ll support whoever I want. This year are Sweden, Netherlands, Italy and France so deal with that. I said an objective fact which are sales. I didn’t say nothing about Sergey but as you have mentioned him let me tell you that he only stayed on top at itunes in Russia for like 2 or 3 days (right now is at 17, and he is so popular in Russia) while Frans is almost 3 weeks at num 1 in Sweden.
@Marc – Sergey’s song works well on iTunes in the Eastern countries and on some Western ones, but your darling Sweden/Frans is all what matters. Or you are “racist” and don’t count the Eastern countries as countries, m?

I’d be interested to see who got votes through the free app and who got sms and calls which aren’t free. We could have different results in the absence of the app.
Also most likely vote count wouldn’t be this high. Each person can cast so many “heart votes,” 10, 20, 30 and even more.
I’m expecting Wiwi to include Isa as one of the biggest crimes during the National Finals season this year 😛 If only she would’ve beaten David in her semifinal!
I like more results from Latvia than Sweden. Justs and Frans had the best performances in first round, and Justs also had best result in first round. Swedes are more crazy and that’s why Frans took more votes in final than in semi-final. For me tightness and accuracy are very important. Messy and chaotic performances are bad.
Poor Isa. Coming so close to a direct final place, while SaRaha struggled to make it to Andra Chansen, and in the end she lost the duel with 49.64% (!!). I will probably never get over this.
Although I like her song, I’m also really surprised by the semi final win for Lisa.
In the end, the semi winners finished 10th (Lisa), 5th (Robin), 2nd (Wiktoria) and 1st (Frans) with the public in the final.
@jPod your point is wrong, you can dislike or hate “If I were sorry” but it’s working very well at charts (spotify and it’s been on itunes in Norway, Finland, Denmark and Netherlands). Two weeks at number 1 in Sweden (On Friday is going to repeat) so it’s the most comercial song of this year melfest.

I didn’t see Lisa Ajax until the final, but I was really impressed with her. Wiktoria also really stood out to me; but I can see why Oscar Zia and Ace Wilder got higher jury marks, since the musical content of their songs was at a slightly higher standard, plus there was arguably better staging going on (especially with Ace Wilder). The big disappointment in this breakdown must be for Isa. So close! She should definitely come back again after this!!

For me winner of televoting will be real winner. If jury will vote for odds, Sweden will win, because other strong entries for televoting (Hungary, Cyprus and Malta) have much worse odds. This looks like one big pro-swedish swindle. Everyone sees that Russia has very weak disco similar to weak disco from Estonia in 2011 (Getter Jaani – Rockefeller Street). People like strong disco or not disco (but of course not entries similar to Cascada because it is too shallow).

So Frans beat Wiktoria by 609,567 and Oscar Zia by 664,754 votes in the final and haters still say it wasn’t a landslide. Had the app been used a few years earlier, the difference between Mans and Jon Henrik or Loreen and Danny would’ve been much smaller and the winner would’ve received much lower amount of points, possibly lower than Frans this year because the app voting ensures that all the songs get a very big amount of votes from the public and the percentages are very close between all the artists. Eurovision is the easiest thing in the world, and if someone is overwhelmed by this, this must be overwhelmed by everything.
At this moment Hungary, Cyprus and Sweden are strongest in the ESC 2016. Hungary with first version of “Pioneer” because second and third version are too shallow and similar to Cascada with “Glorious”.
So, even with these numbers, Frans wasn’t good enough to be the runaway winner. Hah!
