This year the three Baltic countries, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, are all sending young male singers – and they’ve certainly set hearts a-flutter in the fandom. We take a look at what it is that makes Jüri Pootsmann, Justs and Donny Montell so special.
1. Justs paid his dues busking on the streets
Before his Superstar appearance, Justs had already made a name for himself as a busker. Here he can be seen playing in Riga’s Old Town:
2. Jüri was Estonia’s Idol
Jüri got his start on Eesti otsib superstaari, (Estonian Idol), where he won the sixth season. Here he is performing his winner’s single, “Torm”:
3. Donny has Eurovision experience
He previously represented Lithuania at Eurovision 2012. Here he is on stage in Azerbaijan with his song “Love Is Blind”:
4. Jüri is an award winner
Fresh from his Idol win, he impressed Estonian music lovers enough to be awarded Best Male Act at the 2015 Estonian Music Awards. Here he is humbly accepting his award:
5. Justs is prepared to suffer for his art
In Justs’s artist profile video, he talks about how his song is a “story about pain”. But he’s not just all talk. As this clip shows, he was feeling the pain while getting a tattoo:
6. Donny is busy doing something
While the Lithuanian national final dragged on for ten weeks, Donny didn’t let that keep him from his regular music career. He released three other singles, “Tai Musu Laikas”, “Is Proto Einu” and his newest one, “Don’t Touch Me”:
7. Justs is working with 2015’s golden girl
After scoring an impressive top-ten finish for Latvia in 2015 with “Love Injected”, Aminata has returned as the songwriter of Justs song “Heartbeat”. She discussed her involvement at Supernova:
8. Jüri is also teaming up with the 2015 champ
Jüri’s song is written by Stig Rästa, who previously performed “Goodbye to Yesterday” with Elina Born in Vienna. Here is their top-ten performance from Eurovision 2015.
9. Donny is a dad
He’s married to dancer Veronika Brasaite and they have an adorable daughter. Or as Eric Saade might say, that makes him a #DILF!
10. Jüri had a “Heroes” moment
At the grand final of Idol, Jüri and fellow finalist (and future Eesti Laul contestant) Gertu Pabbo paired up to perform Måns Zelmerlöw’s “Heroes”. Here is their grand final duet:
11. They love playing pranks
Here’s Jüri tricking Justs on April Fools Day while Donny looks on and laughs and laughs and laughs:
Update: 1 April 2016, 12:00
This is so embarrassing. It looks like there was a problem with our image server and rather than having pics of the Baltic Boys, instead this page has been displaying pics of Serhat reclining on a chaise longue, with a come-hither look in his eyes.
Either that or it’s an April Fool’s Day trick. 🙂
