As the world of music mourns the loss of Prince, Dami Im paid tribute with a powerful version of “Purple Rain” on Australian morning television today.

Dami had made “Purple Rain” one of her signature tunes when she appeared on The X Factor in 2013. Her grand final performance of the song helped secure her victory on the show and launch her career.

This week’s artist in residence on The Morning Show, Dami broke from her scheduled performance to give a heartfelt rendition of the song in a purple-hued studio.

After the performance, Dami spoke about what Prince had meant to her.

“He’s influenced so many amazing artists around the world. He’s a legend and ever since X Factor I’ve been singing [“Purple Rain”] millions of times. When I heard the news this morning I was shocked and I feel like I’m still in shock, to be honest.

“I want to pay him tribute. It’s hard to say this, but he’s gone now but his music still will be there forever. I just try my best to bring the beauty of the music alive.”

Dami Im performs “Purple Rain” on The X Factor (2013)

“Purple Rain” has been a past favourite with Eurovision stars. Ruth Lorenzo performed it on the UK X Factor in 2008, which saw her become a serious contender in the competition. Jüri Pootsmann performed the song on the Estonian Idol grand final last year, while Michal Spzak performed it on his Polish X Factor experience.

Eurovision winner Celine Dion was lucky enough to have His Royal Purpleness pen a song for her. “With This Tear” was a track on her second English-language album, Celine Dion, in 1992.

That was an amazing performance on a last minutes tribute to Prince request by TV host and to do it at 9:00 am in the morning too. She was there to promote her new album “Classic Carpenters” which I also love from Dami. Powerful performance, powerful vocal, an emotional tribute to a legend. Thank you Dami.

There are some songs that just can’t be covered, and Purple Rain is one of them. But Dami’s version is the best attempt at it I’ve ever heard – this performance, a bit more calm than the X Factor one – at least. She seems to understand the soul of the song, which is as important as being able to hit the big notes.

Nailed it. Wished I can sing as good as you, Dami!

I think Michal Szpak has the best voice to sing PURPLE RAIN – the song would sound powerful and veeery emotional. He sang it 5 years ago in X Factor but he was too young back then to interpret it the way he could do it now. Michal why don’t you give it a try? Pleeeeeaaaaase…

Yes there is more to Dami im than meets the eye. Dami is the most versatile singer in the world singing any genre you can imagine, she is gorgeous, charming and a very humble beautiful person. and ticks all the boxes.”purple rain” is one of my favorites and this Vid proves that Dami will rock that stage at Eurovision and blow everyone away to the point that she will win or come top 3. Dami’s talents are incredible. Hope everyone enjoys her artistry.

I do like Ira’s singing in the studio version of the song but I haven’t heard her sing live yet. I will reserve my final judgement on D Day. If deserving, of course I will award her some points.

@Theresa

Although Sound of Silence might be a little on the repetitive side, there are many key changes throughout the song and Dami’s voice is hypnotizing. Other people might say it’s boring but I think it’s got enough ‘punch’ to make you sit up and take notice. It’s definitely one of the stand out songs in this year’s contest.

@Vassiliki

thank you, and i think those 10 singers have what it takes to deliver a stunning performance, and do you like Ira Losco as well?

and can you vote for her as well, if she does a good job with her song? 🙂

@Theresa

i can easily agree with you, but i’m not a fan of high notes, i like the lower notes more, and it’s better for my ears, having said that Dami is a great singer if you like the high notes 🙂

i’m more a fan of Dance/Soul/Pop and Big Band 🙂

@Nicky91

I like your preferential listing for best vocalists in Eurovision 2016! The artist who takes home the trophy will be dependent on their singing ability (live), stage presence, atmosphere that is created, and let’s not forget the importance of being able to convey the emotions of a song and sell it to an audience (i.e. connection).

@Vassiliki

i totally agree with you, mate there is no denying that Dami is a powerhouse singer/performer

and for me the best vocalists in this year are:

1. Michal Szpak

2. Dami Im

3. Ira Losco

4. Nina Kraljic

5. Iveta Mukuchyan

6. Gabriela Guncikova

7. Justs

8. Douwe Bob

9. Samra Rahimli ( she’s growing a lot, i hope she can nail her song tomorrow)

10. Barei

so this is my top 10 based on live performing 🙂

Wow! Powerhouse vocals or what?! A taste of what Dami will deliver in the semi final rounds. What’s astonishing is that her voice remains silky even when she hits those high notes. Her vocal range is nothing short of amazing!

well Dami Im, is a world-class superstar, she’s definitely gonna slay in semi final 2, and she’ll definitely gonna rank in the top 5 with Australia, maybe even a contender to win it 🙂
