Melodifestivalen stars have been keeping busy releasing new tracks for the summer. We’ve already heard new releases from Dinah Nah, Ace Wilder, Samir & Viktor, Wiktoria, Eric Saade, Charlotte Perralli and Måns Zelmerlöw. Now it’s time for some more from Magnus Carlsson, SaRaha, Victor och Nattan and Dolly Style.

Magnus Carlsson – “Ge mig sommar”

The schlager king had a Melfest hit in 2015 with “Möt mig i Gamla Stan”, which became the unofficial theme song in Stockholm sung en route from Gamla Stan station to Euroclub. Magnus is back with another schlagertastic banger, “Ge mig sommar” (Give me summer). Its schlager credentials are impeccable, with production by Thomas G:son and a glorious key change at just the right moment. This is what we need.

SaRaha – “Kengele”

After emerging as one of the break-out stars of Melfest 2016 with “Kizunguzungu”, SaRaha’s follow-up single continues to blend Euro dance-pop with Tanzanian Afropop styles. But rather than the feel-good fun of “Kizunguzungu”, “Kengele” is slower, a sexy jam for those hot summer nights. SaRaha brings it.

Victor och Natten “Vi var unga”

Victor och Natten made his debut at Melfest 2016 with “100%”. He might not have qualified for the final, but it was enough to ensure he’d have a follow-up single, “Vi var unga” (We were young). It’s not quite as poppy as “100%” and returns to Victor’s hip hop style, but the track is full of infectious rhythms and Victor delivers a big pop chorus.

Dolly Style – “Unicorns & Ice Cream”

Polly, Molly and Holly are back with their unique style of bubblegum pop. “Unicorns & Ice Cream” is a rock-infused track, sounding like the sort of thing Katy Perry was doing in the late ’00s. The song is a celebration of a magic night, where the girls are driving around on a pink motorbike (of course), with unicorns and ice cream and other Dolly delights. And if you’re wondering what a “bad-ass shopper” is, that’s their Dolly Style way of pronouncing chopper. Though we’re sure they’re also bad-ass shoppers.

Kengele doesn’t reach the heights of Kizunguzungu but it gives a super funky vibe and it’s another grower. Hopefully she’ll make another appearance at Melfest because I think she surpassed so many peoples expectations especially beating ISA.

Is it just me, or does Dolly Style’s song remind anyone of Nicky Byrne’s “Sunlight”?

I have always found Magnus’ music quite bland and boring. Nowadays he doesn’t even seem to try anymore, it’s the same stuff over and over and over again. Watching the video I don’t even get the feeling that he himself is enjoying his music anymore.

There is an issue I have with many MF artists: Their music has potential, but it is produced too “perfectly”, too “smooth”. Sometimes musicians have to take a risk in order to create something edgy instead of always playing safe.

Dear Wiwibloggs, what about some articles other than “melodifestivalen contestant XY has released a new song”? It’s like the fourth in the last few days, and there surely are actual ESC participiants or topics which are worth writing about…
