It hasn’t even been a month since Jamala won Eurovision 2016, but already Ukraine has started planning their hosting duties for Eurovision 2017. One important part of every Eurovision is the artwork, and Ukraine art and design institute Art Arsenal have taken it upon themselves to organise some potential designs, featuring the work of renowned Ukraine folk artist Maria Prymachenko.

Could this taxi be waiting for you at Kyiv airport?

The designers have imagined how Eurovision 2017 branding could be used to feature the art of Mariya Prymachenko. The artist, who came from a peasant background, was known for her colourful folk art and strong sense of composition. The designers have incorporated her designs into mockups for bus and taxi designs, as well as imagining merchandise like cellphone cases.

And it seems that the art of Prymachenko is a popular choice amongst Ukrainians. TV channel NewsOne recently ran a poll where viewers were asked whether they’d want the Eurovision 2017 artwork to be in the style of Prymachenko or in the Petrykivka style, a traditional Ukraine decorative painting style. The viewers responded in favour of  Prymachenko, with 81% of them favouring her style.

The acting director of Art Arsenal Natalia Zabolotnay said that the designs emphasised the unique style of Prymachenko, and also presented Ukraine as a modern country with original art.

However, critics have pointed out that in order to use the artwork of Mariya Prymachenko in Eurovision 2017 designs, first permission will need to be obtained from her estate, the copyright holders of the work.

What do you think of the designs? Should Ukraine use the art of Mariya Prymachenko? Share your thoughts below!

I really like folk style so these projects are very nice. Minimalism is good but boring. I would happy if Ukraine designs folk logo:)

Not only do I love this, but learning the term “naive art” through a quick search gives me a category in which to place my own art. Haha!

I don’t want to say it’s “more folksy,” but the real imbalance of Prymachenko’s design is what’s appealing to me. As much as I love the minimalist sub-logo designs of the past few years, having something with this sort of detail would be a head-turner for everyone and get them talking. It’d be great if they juxtapose this folk design with a modern stage like Stockholm or Copenhagen.

It sure looks interesting and I’m all for having this influence in next year’s graphic identity, if it happens the most probable thing is that it will be more stylized and simplified, quite possibly similar to Moscow 2009’s.

These are awesome, and so different from the last few years! I think it’d be a much need breath of fresh air to have art work in such a folk style. I hope they can get permission.

I definitely belong to the rest 19% of Ukrainians who didn’t like this design. I prefer minimalism, cubism, geometrical stuff and 3D graphics. It’s possible to combine something traditional and something modern I think.

The design on the bus looks quite good. I’m unsure about the rest though. I can imagine Ukraine will want to showcase their country for tourists and to show a certain Russia that they are just as cultural as them.

It will be great to see Eurovision returning to a cultural event, showcasing the culture, landmarks, language good etc of the host country. Something that it lacks when it’s hosted by Scandinavia nations. So I guess that’s one positive of Ukraine hosting. #PleasePickLvivOrKyiv
