Mere days after teasing us about his future Eurovision plans, Russia’s Sergey Lazarev is back on our radar, as he releases the much anticipated music video for “Breaking Away”.

Looking every inch the action hero, the music video sees the pop prince do everything in his power to win back the woman of his dreams. He plays the piano, stares pensively and runs purposefully, but to little avail. Instead, the elusive lady leads him along a corridor and down some stairs, before coming to a halt at an artistically decorated fountain. There she teases the “You Are The Only One” singer with a series of seductive glances.
Sergey grabs her in a passionate embrace but, despite a palpable frisson between the pair, they never kiss. She runs off once again, this time to the sea. As Sergey follows her, we’re treated to shots of him singing passionately on the coastline and flashbacks of the pair in bed. The two board separate boats, resulting in a James Bond style chase. We then cut to the couple in bed once more, but there’s a twist. His lady friend is nothing but a memory. The video ends with a naked and despondent Sergey staring blankly into space. She doesn’t know what she’s missing out on!

And what of the song itself? “Breaking Away” has actually been around for quite some time, featuring on Sergey’s 2015 The Best collection. It’s an up-tempo pop number, not hugely different from his Eurovision effort. Lyrically, the track tells a message of hope and fulfilling one’s dreams — breaking away, we’re getting stronger every day… So now we spread our wings, we’re flying high, breaking away — which is slightly off kilter from the video’s theme of lost love. Nonetheless, this is a welcome helping of slickly produced feel-good man pop in a world of miserable Ed Sheerans and Justin Biebers. For that we’re thankful… along with the lasting shots of a topless musclebound Sergey in bed — don’t judge!

This is a wonderful video showing Lazarev, btw, as a good dramatical actor (have you seen him acting in theatre? I would advise you to use any opportunity to do it) besides that he is a really good singer. And he does what he wants. No more Eurovision for him of course=) Let somebody else go there.
