After getting married and giving birth, she announced that she was quitting music.
But Azerbaijan’s Eurovision 2010 star Safura has a hunger for music, so she’s back with a new single “Baku”.
Named after the country’s glittering capital, which hosted Eurovision 2012, the song captures Safura’s love of the city. It’s a four-minute love letter set to an EDM backing — and peppered with patriotism and pride. “This city gives you big love, and trust me this is so true,” she says, all sunshine and smiles. “Our lovely Baku will inspire you, biggest flag in the world on top of the view.” (She’s not kidding).
She composed the song, wrote the lyrics and produced the track. But interestingly she only makes a cameo in the video at the very end. Instead we see teenage girls singing the track, roller skating in front of the Heydar Aliyev Center (which you may recognise from Samra’s Eurovision 2016 postcard) and having fun along the Caspian Sea. Look closely and you’ll see Baku’s Crystal Hall Arena, where Loreen won Eurovision. And you can even clock Safura’s little girl!

Safura and her husband, who helped direct the video, plan to contribute to Azerbaijan’s developing tourism industry and the video is a sure-fire signal they are taking their plans seriously.
It’s the latest twist in Safura’s always evolving career.
In 2010 she was a pre-contest favourite to win Eurovision in Oslo, alongside eventual winner Lena. Her video for “Drip Drop” was choreographed by the same genius behind Beyoncé and we were loving her song in the days leading up to Eurovision. Unfortunately Safura had to perform first in the grand final, and many fans believe this is the reason she finished fifth rather than challenging for the top spot.
After marrying Farid Aliyev — the son of Azerbaijan’s Minister of Industry and Energy — she gave birth to her first child in 2013. She then called off her music career, only to release “Sen ve Men” and “Hey Baby” later in the year, before vanishing again. But then she re-emerged in 2015 and opened an art gallery in Istanbul.

I loved her entry for ESC, but this song is rubbish. The music reminds me about Sigala’s “Sweet Lovin” with the girl splattering colourful graphit. As I am Armenian, I am not allowed to enter Azerbaijan even with non-Armenian passport, I can tell that Baku is really beautiful. However, I noticed the copycat technique of building its modern part… No creativity there. I saw London’s Eye, Dubai’s hotel tower buildings which are called Flame towers, Amsterdam’s slogan “I love Amsterdam” etc. The two famous buildings of the Crystall hall designed and built by the foreigners and the museum by the… Read more »

I think she should have won in 2010, her song was by far the best! So happy for her comeback! 🙂
I didn’t really get the video. Is it about teenage lesbians hanging out in Baku? I don’t know if that’s the message they are trying to give.
I like Safura, but I’d expect a better comeback from her.
