Russia’s Dima Bilan is busy, busy, busy. In May he released his latest single “Inseparable” — with a video that featured the world famous model Emily Ratajkowski — and just last month he joined Polina Gagarina for the Olympic torch relay in Brazil. Such a packed schedule would take its toll on the best of us, and so fans started to worry as Dima began to look increasingly gaunt and thin in photographs. Was he working too hard? Was he ill? Or worse? Soon Russian tabloids kicked the rumour mill into overdrive, forcing the Eurovision 2008 winner to explain his dramatic weight loss.
Most of us first came across Dima as a scrawny 24 year old, when he sang for Russia at Eurovision 2006. He returned to the contest two years later with a buff new look (as illustrated in the featured image above), earning Russia it’s first ever victory. Obviously the “Believe” singer’s image has constantly evolved over the intervening years, but it’s only in recent months that fans grew alarmed. His newest Instagram posts show a much leaner and bonier Dima than we’re used to, a look that’s emphasised by his fondness for topless shots. However, even when fully clothed the change was clear. When we reported on his trip to Brazil, many of y’all picked up on it in the comments section. One reader went so far as to raise the spectre of cancer.
However, in the past few days, Dima has gone some way towards quelling fans’ anxiety. On Instagram he wrote:
Water-happiness is around ! Off to massage! ! ////////// I DO NOT want to gain weight though, cause it’s easier to move around like this, and the artist must starve !!!!!!!!!!!!!! You better tell me some cool stories, for the tone maintenance and for the inspiration to conquer the world!)
He elaborated further in an interview with Russian website KP.
I just decided to relieve himself a little bit, because the touring routine does not contribute to the proper diet. And since January… I decided to listen to my body and be more attentive to my health. Now I practice a raw food diet. I go in for sports. I eat often, but little. I try to eat porridge in the morning. I’ve just become more selective with what I eat.
So crisis averted, Dima’s not dying. The singer is simply doing like other superstars and extreme dieting. It’s not ideal, but hey, who are we to judge? We can only presume that Dima is consulting with professional nutritionists or dietitians, because cutting out whole food groups is not a good idea. We like our popstars fighting fit, and a balanced and healthy diet is part of the package.
