Måns Zelmerlöw is a busy man. When he’s not being nominated for Sweden’s prestigious Kristallen television award or organising a charity football match, he’s releasing new music. The 2016 Eurovision host has released new single “Hanging on to Nothing”, with a big soul sound.

Like a lot of Måns’ songs, “Hanging on to Nothing” tells a story of relationship turmoil. He sings, “Calling you up at night/I think I f***ed up” – and yes, he happily drops the F-bomb which is such a Swedish thing to do.

Måns sings of a trouble relationship. His bae is in love with him, but he’s a bad boy who “can’t be tamed”. Despite all the drama and with all evidence pointing to a break-up, Måns is still hanging on. It turns out he loves the drama – “Cos every time that you leave me I’m loving it/And every time that I’m set free I’m hanging on to nothing”.

Like previous single “Fire in the Rain”, “Hanging on to Nothing” is about weathering stormy relationships. But while “Fire in the Rain” took a more positive outlook, “Hanging on to Nothing” is revelling in the misery.

Måns debuted the song last week at the singalong show Sommarkrysset. He brought a slick show to the Gröna Lund stage, with a brass section and four glamorous backing singers.

Måns mixed things up with his stage outfit, combining a stylish black blazer and white shirt with bold gold-coloured trousers.

The Eurovision 2015 winner demonstrated his confidence as a singer, able to command the stage, and getting the audience bopping along.

Måns Zelmerlöw “Hanging on to Nothing” – lyrics

Wrote you like a thousand times
I might have lost track
Calling you up at night
I think I f***ed up
I see it’s over now
That I can’t hide among the scars
That we’ve been given
The path is now forbidden

You say that you’re in love with me
But I can’t be tamed, possibly
We try and we fall desperately
It’s like I’m hanging on to nothing just for you, babe

Cos every time that you leave me I’m loving it
And every time that I’m set free I’m hanging on to nothing
Just for you, babe
Just for you
Just for you, babe
Just for you

Told you like a million lies
To keep you satisfied
Kisses for your appetite
To keep us far away from fighting
It’s over now and I can’t hide
The scars that we’ve been given
The path is now forbidden

You say that you’re in love with me
But I can’t be tamed, possibly
We try and we fall desperately
It’s like I’m hanging on to nothing, just for you, babe

Cos every time that you leave me I’m loving it
And every time that I’m set free I’m hanging on to nothing
Just for you, babe
Just for you
Just for you, babe
Just for you

Cos every time that you leave me I’m loving it
And every time that I’m set free I’m hanging on to nothing
Just for you, babe
Just for you
Just for you, babe
Just for you

It’s unreal how we bleed
I can’t seem to break free
From these chains that were made
Made just for me
I try and I fall desperately
It’s like I’m hanging on to nothing, just for you, babe

Cos every time that you leave me I’m loving it
And every time that I’m set free I’m hanging on to nothing
Just for you, babe
Just for you
Just for you, babe
Just for you

Cos every time that you leave me I’m loving it
And every time that I’m set free I’m hanging on to nothing
Just for you, babe
Just for you
Just for you, babe
Just for you

It’s like I’m hanging on to nothing just for you, babe
It’s like I’m hanging on to nothing just for you, babe
It’s like I’m hanging on to nothing just for you, babe
It’s like I’m hanging on to nothing just for you, babe

Great song! Better than “Fire In The Rain”.

I prefer ‘Hanging On To Nothing’ over ‘Fire In The Rain’. I really wanted ‘Wrong Decision’ to be the next single though.

So happy to be getting some new music from Måns. Can’t wait for the new album in November!

Good song. Hope he’ll sing it in Poland on Sunday. Margaret will be there and also Alvaro Soler!
