Aside from her stint on Så mycket bättre, it’s been a while since Carola’s troubled the charts in Sweden or anywhere else. But this summer she’s back on the airwaves, albeit not in the way you might have expected. Thanks to a name drop on Peg Parnevik’s sophomore single “We Are (Ziggy & Carola)”, the three-time Melfest winner’s name is on every pop-loving Swede’s lips.

Peg Parnevik is one of the most exciting new names in Scandi music. Rising to fame on the Parneviks reality show, the 20 year old branched into pop earlier this year. Her debut single “Ain’t No Saint” peaked at two in the charts, but it’s her second effort that’s got us excited. Because invariably, except for when she’s spewing controversial opinions, Carola can always be relied on to bring some sort of smile to our face – even if she’s only falling through a glass table.
“We Are (Ziggy & Carola)” is a Caribbean flavoured R&B pop anthem dedicated to the joys of summer. The music video sees the rising star take the party from the poolside to the sea to the club. We’re getting major “wish we were there” pangs, even if she did tell press that the song can be enjoyed anywhere — “in your boat, car or on the beach”.
Parnevik wrote the lyrics just after David Bowie’s death in January, with the Ziggy reference being a partial nod to his Ziggy Stardust character, as well as Ziggy Marley – due to the song’s reggae elements. As for Carola, Peg says it best: “Carola’s Carola”. The track “is really about people who dare to be themselves”, which is one thing Ms. Häggkvist is certainly an expert at. So far the song has reached a high of 38 in the charts, while Peg has performed it at the ever popular Rix FM Festival and on SVT’s Allsång På Skansen.
