Is there anything she can’t do? Jessica Mauboy, the Australian singer who performed “Sea of Flags” as a semi-final interval act in 2014, has her first starring role in a drama series. She’s starring in the new Australia series The Secret Daughter, in a role that lets her sing as well as act.

In the series, Jessica plays a country pub singer who has a chance meeting with a wealthy city hotelier. As the promo enticingly promises, this “triggers a series of events that will change her life forever.”

Jessica’s character is a singer, so there is plenty of music in the series, and this will soon be released on the soundtrack album The Secret Daughter (Songs from the Original TV Series). It includes five original songs and 12 cover versions of songs by artists such as Roxette, Crowded House, The Clash and Ed Sheeran. It also features the original song “Risk It”, released as the lead single.

Australian television has been criticised for a lack of cultural diversity. The multicultural cast of The Secret Daughter aims to break this barrier.

Jessica recently told The Daily Telegraph Australia that she is proud to be cast in the leading role of an Australian drama. “I am now a part of a show that I would have wanted to see growing up. I feel really proud to have stood up and taken this role”, she said. “Doing this show has been a life highlight in a direction I didn’t ever think I’d be going”.

This not Jessica’s first acting role, having previously appeared in two Australian films. She featured in the 2009 musical comedy Bran Nue Dae, and had a lead role in the 2012 film The Sapphires.

The Secret Daughter premieres on 3 October on Seven Network in Australia.

I prefer her in competition next year, instead of The Veronicas. Jessica was interval act in 2014, I just have a feeling that she needs a closure – competing !
