Every year a slew of hugely talented artists fill the Eurovision Song Contest stage. Sadly they can’t all make it to the grand final, let alone win. But even worse than that is being totally wronged by televoters and jurors despite your kickass performance. This year was no different. Germany’s Jamie-Lee finished dead last in the final. Estonia’s Juri Pootsmann came last in his semi-final. Half the juries blanked Russia’s Sergey Lazarev. Czech Republic’s Gabriela Guncikova received zero televotes in the grand final. And Romania’s Ovidiu Anton didn’t even get to compete following debts owed by his government.
But in the end our readers felt one act was more wronged than anyone else. After counting 4,032 votes, we can now reveal that Iceland’s Greta Salóme has won the Vision Music Award of 2016 for Most Wronged.
Oh how we rooted, screamed, wolf whistled and what not when Greta Salóme came onstage and totally slayed with her sexy costume — which she later donated to charity — and her dark and spine-tingling staging. Her voice was completely on point. Her graphics were top notch (so much so that many have suggested Britney later copied them at the other VMAs). And the re-mastering of “Hear Them Calling” had major oomph.
However, when it came time to vote Europe wasn’t in awe, and Greta ended up in 14th place in the semi finals. Pfff! That is what we call being wronged!
Greta joins an impressive list of acts who have been hard done by in recent years and walked away with the Most Wronged award: Italy’s Il Volo (2015), Israel’s Mei Finegold (2014) and Romania’s Cezar Ouatu (2013).

Vision Music Awards 2016: The nominees
This award is just one of a dozen awards we have launched as part of the Vision Music Awards 2016 (VMAs). Our 13 categories—from biggest disappointment to most most wronged at ESC—identify the contestants who left the biggest impression on Eurovision fans, regardless of whether they won the contest or not.
You can watch the nominations video below. You can also read more about the awards here.
Greta got her 14th place fair and square – because the public and the juries weren’t impressed. Sorry superfans – it’s not your Contest.
The most wronged in 2016 was OBVIOUSLY Ovidiu Anton.
The visuals dn’t matter much, it’s about the music! Noone can seriously claim Iceland failed to reach the final because of visuals.
The points system thus should be such that atleast half the countries should get points…..so if there are 26 countries in the final we should have 13 countries getting points 15,13,11-1…….coz giving 10/17-18 countries points in the semi and only 10/26 in the final will always be unfair
I think the most wronged is Czech Republic. Not even next top model ? I have no link with this country, but if I am onest, and also 100% politically INcorrect, I will say that Czech Republic is cursed with so righteous neighbors that don’t give them anything. Yes I know I should not say that, but let’s say that 0 points in televote does not mean 0 votes, all the contrary, maybe they were place (rank) 11, not 26.
Unfortunately, place 11 or 26 means still 0 points.
Why isn’t Juri higher up? Juri had better live vocals than Greta lol soz
@Vladimir P – Agreed. Both deserved to be in the final over some not-so-great entries.
I think we all will be most wronged if Azerbaijan doesn’t win worst live vocals 😡
Nothing wrong with Iceland’s result. I Said a Million times that the song was totally bland, unoriginal, formulaic and only a hype inside the fan bubble. No unaffiliated viewer would like it.
On the other hand I predicted in 2014 that the Netherlands were the darkhorse when the wiwi fan bubble said meh. Common Linnets had the strongest casual viewer and radio appeal of all.
I’d vote Estonia.
Greta, you pay for being unoriginal.
For me Norway and Iceland were the most wronged this year. Agnete was great and I like really liked Greta a lot.
New song from Sandy C. ))

Estonia was more wronged, dead last place was completely undeserved. FYR Macedonia, Serbia and Norway were also really wronged, and I don’t get the hype around Iceland given Greta was such a weak vocalist.
@ Laburnum – if the juries are supposed to award originality, then how did they make Sweden and Australia win this year? The juries are only put there to help certain countries win.
The poor Balkan sistrens Macedonia and Bosnia were the most wronged. Ending top 10 in the televote with quality songs in their national languages but being sabotaged by the “professional” juries… Greta’s song was good but we didn’t need another basic song in the final when we had, for example, Austria (another televote magnet in a non-English language that the juries completely destroyed, smh).
I agree with this but I have to put Spain instead of Russia. Spain wasn’t my favourite yet I dislicked less vocable chorus in live version and garbage outfit but to see it in least vote section second year in a row? Painful. Yet the Pootsman staging would’ve been better as the previous one from Eesti Laul fitted so good. I guess it partly even worked like Rykka or for Kraljic’ situations, decreasing potencial impression from act.
How was Russia wronged by the jury? Aren’t they supposed to be marking for originality? Not that many songs thus year were exactly unique, but Russia was soooo dated and heard so many times before.
I love Iceland’s song, but this should have gone to Estonia, Romania or Czech Republic, their first final and they get given the worst possible slot, no wonder they got blanked by the televote
Well, I mean Azerbaijan are in a whole other category of “wrong”. They should’ve been banned from the contest years ago.
I know something wrong when they announce Azerbaijan in the final. I think Iceland should be in final instead of Azerbaijan.
Iceland is definitely a worthy winner of Most Wronged. The staging was great, though obviously “inspired” by previous Swedish winners, but the song in itself deserved to go through purely on merit. Sad. Notable mention : Douwe Bob singing third. I feel that one of the best songs in the competition deserved a better spot and could’ve easily finished in the top ten singing later on. One of the problems with the producer’s running order – it’s much better to leave it to the luck of the draw, as it takes away any lingering resentments and is more transparent. They… Read more »
Norway was the most wronged, Agnete was brilliant! Why didn’t you include her in the list?
1 to 6 is definitely accurate because they have their own reasons, excluding Sergey. I don’t know why he is that wronged as his placing is satisfactory and can be shared with Dami Im’s.
Why Kaliopi isn’t here..?
What do you say when your own broadcaster doesn’t support you with the final performance?? Nina was wronged by her own channel 🙁
I was not a fan of this year’s Icelandic entry. The song was lackluster. Vocally she was “mediocre”–due to her erratic moves during the live performance. Plus, the visual presentation seemed like a hybrid of Euphoria and Heroes.
Probably would have worked better if she just used fewer jerking motions, and she just standing there and singing the song.
Spain was the most wronged
