Maltese broadcaster PBS has revealed the stage design for Junior Eurovision 2016. Over the next six weeks, the Mediterranean Conference Centre will be transformed into a swirly rainbowlicious wonderland in time for JESC 2016.

The design still looks stunning in subdued blues
The stage still looks stunning in icy blues

The stage design reveals a curving LED backdrop running behind a main circular stage. The stage features a tall spiral which hints at a traditional proscenium arch theatre design. There’s also a catwalk leading to a smaller stage on the right. All up, it offers plenty of options for the class of 2016 to present their songs.

Unlike Malta’s hosting of JESC in 2014, which was held in the temporarily converted Malta Shipbuilding sheds, the 2016 show will be held in the Mediterranean Conference Centre. Its main auditorium — the largest theatre in Malta — has a much smaller audience capacity of  just 1500 seats. But the MCC was the host of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest national final earlier this year, and has proved itself a suitable location for a live televised singing competition.

All the facilities of the Mediterranean Conference Centre venue will be put to full use to house various JESC needs. This includes the show’s green room, which will be hosted in the historic Infirmary hall, adjacent to the main auditorium.

Entries for JESC 2016 continued to be revealed. Most recently, we’ve heard Australia’s Alexa Curtis with “We Are”, Russia’s girl group the Water Life Project with “Water of Life” and Serbia’s Dunja Jelicic singing “U La La La”.

Junior Eurovision 2016 is due to take place on Sunday 20 November 2016, with the show taking place at the earlier time of 16.00 CET. Also changing for 2016, the show’s age range has shifted to between 9 and 14 years, and the show will no longer use a televote component for voting, instead using a professional jury and a kids’ jury.

What do you think of the stage design for JESC 2016? How does it compare to Malta’s stage in 2014? Share your thoughts below!

This oddly reminds me of Adult Eurovision’s 2009 stage.

Sorry for going a bit off topic but if Malta won the adult contest, what venue would they use?

This stage is a little bit too casual but I think it will look pretty.

It looks like one of the stages that you would have saw in the early 2000’s of the adult contest
