In May she gave Ukraine its second-ever Eurovision victory, taking her career to another level in the process.
And on Tuesday evening Jamala — full name Susana Alimivna Jamaladinova — achieved another personal milestone, this time by saying “I do!” to her boyfriend Bekir Suleimanov.
The “1944” singer announced the news by uploading a sweet picture of herself to Instagram and Facebook, which showed her smiling and with her engagement ring on fine display.
The Elle magazine cover star worked a dramatic eye in the image, created with lashings of mascara, kohl eyeliner, and a natural happiness that comes from love.
She let her dark locks fall loosely and her bangs covers much of her wrinkle-free forehead.
Bekir, her long-time boyfriend, is an economist and mathematician — a reality that made Jamala doubt her relationship initially.
Speaking to Ukraine’s 1+1 in October, she said they’ve found surprising common ground.
“He loves his job,” she said. “At first I was very worried about how a musician may not be able to find something in common with mathematics. But he really helps me with his mathematical mind to understand what is happening in the music.”
“We are dating, and we have very friendly relationships with each other’s parents. I don’t want to comment, but I will say that this relationship is very serious for me. I haven’t got a proposal, but are having serious conversations.”
Eurovision fans will want to thank Bekir, as he is one of the main reasons she decided to compete at Eurovision.
“I said, ‘No, never,'” she remembers of her early thoughts of Eurovision. “He gave me a graph which showed the pros and cons, and explained everything to me. And I agreed.”
Here’s wishing Jamala and Bekir a lifetime of happiness! Congratulations!
