The race is over. Donald Trump has beaten Hillary Clinton and will now become the 45th president of the United States.
Similar to the British Brexit vote last June, the Republican presidential candidate confounded pollsters, media pundits and even his own party to secure a victory that seemed almost impossible just hours previously.
Not even allegations of sexual harassment and tax avoidance nor racist rhetoric could block his path to the White House.
This morning, the rest of the world woke with a shock. For the most part the reaction has been negative. Sarah Dawn Finer — Melodifestivalen and Eurovision personality — eloquently expressed the feelings of many.
This is a such a sad day for humanity. All of humanity. That hate retoric and dividing Us as people lead to This kind of result. We need to fight harder, Louder and United to make a better world for Us, our children and better children for our world. We know why This is happening all over the world. So .. Time to ‘be the change we want to see in the world.” Now more than ever. Be kind. Be real. Show compassion and love. Don’t close your eyes and look away. Do something.. perhaps something Good for somebody else.
However, not everyone shared such a view. Stars such as Ani Lorak, Emin and Philipp Kirkorov extended their congratulations to the new “Leader of the Free World”.
What follows are their and other reactions from Eurovision stars on social media.

what i want to say, this guy (trump) in office is such a terrible thing, yes, but americans will finally come to realise what is like to have such an incompetent, power-hungry person in office (such as those the US has extensively promoted overseas). please, let’s concentrate in doing the good beginning with ourselves and our close ones.
oh good god… I’m sooo glad ManuElla flopped and stayed in semis. why would she admire a woman who is now ashamed of being Slovenian and married a horrible guy just for status? but what else can we expect from a woman whose biggest influence is… Taylor Swift.
same with Mr. Kirkorov. i’m suddenly so glad he didn’t win this year. can someone please delete this guy from the world?
I feel sorry for the LGBT in America. They’re gonna have 4 years of rough time by being discriminated against from the hard-core Trump supporters.
The Syrian people are not just fleeing ISIS – they’re also desperately trying to escape the bloodthirsty rampage of their “own” leader, Al-Assad, and the brutality of Putin’s arsenal. To suggest they should take up arms and “kick the living crap” out of ISIS is absurd. You expect the ordinary banker or dentist to compete with industrialized warfare and chemical weapons? Get real. You seem to have some romantic notion based on the the US civil war or war of independence. This is the 21st century. As for the media, are you talking abour the same rigged media who gave… Read more »
Lena is stupid. That picture is fake
Manuella is an idiot. Melania hardly did anything. The only reason she will be First Lady is because she didn’t lose her lunch when she had to procreate with Donald. She didn’t even have an original thought during the entire campaign. Wanna bet he’ll dump her after his term is done?
Now, I like Petra, Douwe, and Laura Tesoro even more now. Smart people!
Hillary would’ve been so much better than Trump! At least Hillary CARES for the ENVIRONMENT. Trump wants to take America back to 1960 with investements in fossil fuel and opening the mines. PLEASE AMERICA, I thought you wanted to be the the example for the world, now you’re the example how NOT to be. How can you think so stupid about the environment! It exists. A lot of countries, even their own, will be in trouble if America stops the climate deal.
Although there are some serious variables associated with a Trump presidency, I believe he was the right candidate to win. The progressives in the U.S. have tried to make their agenda the standard for equality, tolerance, and freedom. Thus, they frame people who disagree with their agenda as xenophobic. Despite the fact that long-run economic growth and national security have weakened under the current Democratic administration, the progressives sought to justify their agenda in the name of tolerance and equality. It seems as if results have become a secondary factor. I agree with much of what Pollaski has said in… Read more »
@Jonas I love the electoral college. Without it, we would have metropolitan tyranny- the cities would dominate policy, with the rural areas getting screwed (more so than they are now). States like Montana and Vermont would be completely ignored, and national politics would be dominated by California, New York, Texas, and Florida. Even most Democrats admit the last thing we need is those four states having even more power. Florida Man exists for a reason, people. And the scenario you proposed was what I was expecting in 2012- I figured Romney was going to win the popular vote and lose… Read more »
@Jonas: You said: “Hopefully he gets impeached within the year! We need more progress, love, diversity, not 50 year old angry men not understanding the world is changing!” And that translates into: “Hopefully someone who’s been legitimately elected according to the rules of the democratic game gets impeached within the year and we put someone much better just because he/she agrees with us. Yeah, that’s the sort of progressive defensor of democracy and human rights I am! We need people to love our ideologies only, because we are the illuminated ones, not those 60 million ignorant bigoted narrow-minded guys I’ve… Read more »
Final thought: How do you expect people to be united and contribute to world piece when the whole election process has been about attacking people for their race, gender and ethnicity? The damage’s already been done and I don’t expect it to get better, rather worse. Expect racism and xenophobia to flourish.. It’s like America gave up when they elected Trump. What hope is there left for the rest of us when you chose a billionaire reality star who goes after people like that? What is he going to do with world leaders he doesn’t get along with? Trump will… Read more »
Pollaski, how do you feel about the electoral college? It seems Donald Trump was right all along, it is rigged – he just never realized it would be in his favor. Imagine for a moment if it was the other way round, and he had topped the popular vote but lost the election. I read your post, and am ruminating on it. You’re absolutely correct when you say I don’t understand the conservative movement. I try not to demonize “the other side” (honest!), but sometimes y’all make it hard. The demonizing and vilification of Hillary Clinton is off the scale.… Read more »
@Chicken Kyiv
I know, right? Its so weird. It got so many likes on Twitter and Facebook. Why didnt it work at the ballot box?
@charles
Ita okay, man. Being the respectful and tolerant guy that I am, I understand its been a rough day. I can totally understand where you wouls think a call to enforce immigration laws would be considered hate speech, but the sentiment that 160 million people are collectively horrible human beings based on a box they checked is not.
Go lie down and sleep, friend. Its been a long, hard day, but the sun will rise tomorrow
It’s almost as if branding people racist and xenophobic when they express legitimate concerns for their jobs and national security, doesn’t make them change their mind and vote for you.
@Pollaski: And here I thought you would understand what respect and tolerance actually means … apparently you have been paying way too much attention to Mr. Trump’s classes on Hatred and watching way too many Fox news in the US that all of the sudden your brain just stopped working properly … you no longer understand what hatred really means: you don’t see it in Trumps but you see in anybody else … just the way Trumps wanted. Top student of his class-much?
For those of you still failing to understand, here’s a post I wrote on my sports board (slightly edited for language) on why this happened Four Years Ago… Today, 11:08 AM I said straight up, in the wake of Romney, that if the GOP ran a fiery candidate, that showed as much contempt for liberal progressive ideals as those progressives show for conservatives and their values, and made illegal immigration the forefront of his policy, he would win. You all laughed at me. Most of the board libs even said they hoped it would happen, because it would be the… Read more »

“Hey, you Trump supporters are racist, mysogynistic, xenophobes who voted because you were afraid of LGBT rights and non-white people! But come over here and stand together with us in unity and compassion!”
Yeah, that’s a message that wins elections.
Pollaski, again this is mostly the case with Trump and other populist leaders. It is well known and where the majority of voters comes from: The forgotten silent minority. A number of working class and in USA middle-class voters who feel forgotten by the major parties, who are tired of only being mentioned once or twice during the election period. They feel like the government doesn’t benefit them. In USA this is also mostly conservative voters who believe in traditional values and they feel a bit out of a place in a more diverse and progressive country. A country where… Read more »
In my life i have never seen a president been assassinated, so thanks America for this
@Denis The fact that you assume that every Trump voter thinks like this (or anything more than a very tiny percentage) is a testament to how “Open minded” you are. In fact, like I said earlier, the outright rebellion against your generalization is why this movement even happened. @Jonas First of all, please don’t patronize me by acting like you respect or understand conservatism. Your comments previously, and your dismissive attitude here, make it very clear you find the movement beneath you. That hatred is directed towards his supporters, not the man, so I’m gonna wave the BS flag there.… Read more »
To be honest, I couldn’t care less what NOBODIES as Petra Mede and Oscar Zia / Edward af Sillen thinks…. (I have the same opinion about them as I have about Trump….and that is NOT a good one!)
But if some do…that is fine too!
But I agree, this has nothing to do with ESC….I am really bored with reading about the US election everyplace! 😉
We are open minded Pollaski, that’s why we oppose Trump and other narrow-minded angry middle aged men who won’t understand or accept that women have power positions, that there are more than one colour out there and that globalisation is an issue. They are bitter over the fact that they now are the minority and a dying kind. That’s why they want change, to go back to the old where women were objects and being white was powerful.
I’m surprised Trumps campaign slogan wasn’t “Make America White Again”, and “Grab Them By The ..
The “hatred” stems from the candidate, not the policy differences. I understand folks being fiscally conservative, small government, “we the people”, blah blah blah – but Donald Trump is none of those things. He is a scaremongering phony. A racist. He was campaigning with Ted Nugent, for crying out loud. This is more than a difference of opinion. You must know that. I certainly don’t hate the Trump voters (well, not all of them) – in fact I pity them, because time and time again they vote against their own interests.
@Jonas
Erik Saade
Ruth Lorenzo
Stig Rasta
Tim Douwsa
Sarah Dawn Finer
Omar Naber
Mickey Harte

Edward Af Sillen
All with such hatred towards people they’ve never met for having a differing opinion. I thought Europeans were supposed to be open minded.
What stars are you referring to, Pollaski?
Oh, and the attitudes you guys are expressing in the comments are pretty much exactly why Trump won in the first place.
So, uh, congrats
Kinda depressing to read that some of my favorite Eurovision stars are so filled with hate.
I’m american, someone please help me out of here.
@Denis 50 years of profress? That’s how you call 30 wars started all over the world, from Korea, vietnam and Afghanistan, to Yugoslavia, Iraq, Libya and Syria? f””k you,,, progress
He only won because of the electoral college. Hillary got more actual votes. Democrats have now won the popular vote for six of the last seven elections.
Stupid people voted on a stupid man.
Ern, you are sadly & tragically uninformed. The issue with Hillary is her policies, which are/were the right thing for America. Trump has no policy – only bizarre rambling. The Clinton Foundation has a A grade from charity watchdogs, and has saved millions of lives in Africa. The Trump Foundation is the scam, and doesn’t even qualify for charity status. The man is a con-artist – everybody can see that.
Also, if the people were so fed up with politicians – why were most of the incumbent senators and representatives re-elected by the very same voters?
@dutchie — the issue with Hillary is not if you “like” or “dislike” her. She is corrupt!! She set-up a scam charity to enrich herself and sell government favors to the highest bidder. THIS is a problem.
@EnjaESQ — think about it !! Everyday Americans are so fed-up with politicians, they’re willing to gamble on a grotesque, vulgar sexist. THAT tells you how frustrated people really are.
EnjaESC obviously swallows all the GOP propaganda whole. Sad!
I am happy! Not because Trump won, but because Hillary lost! We need to work together – Trump will achieve important goals with Russia! Justice won over war! Thank you, Mr. Trump!
@Ern I agree with every single word.People just don’t understand that Hillary could be an even worse choice. She’s very smart, and she knows how to hide her evilness.
Like…thinking to be running against Trump would clean up all sins?Whitewater scandal,Benghazi attack, bombing Syria…
I’m ashamed that these USA elections gave space to two CRIMINALS.
I don’t know how we got to this. Is this the end of the world? Congrats America! You just took a giant step 50 years back in time, and all the progress you made these years went up in smoke. I can’t understand how we are supposed to get world piece with a person that hates everyone, doesn’t believe in climate changes, insults minorities and whose running partner wants to abolish abortions and LGBT rights, you know basic human rights. A man who basically encourages and says it’s OK to assault women and grab them. The man has a temperament… Read more »

@ern
Despised, oh sure. But for what reason? People don’t like Hillary, I can understand that (neither do I) but what does it matter if you like someone? As long as they can do the job and don’t drown in their own lies.
@ Seismo – if you brought up education system now, you clearly don’t even know what it is, since it has nothing to do with what I said. How about your country having conservative propaganda? That’s more like it 😉
ManuElla <3
Hillary won the popular vote, so that’s something.
@Polegend Godgarina I don’t know what country you are from, but your country has a very poor education system.
soulcrushing :(((
would’ve voted for her if i could
@ VictorKiriakis – of course you guys are happy. Russia is exactly like the United States with communism. And now you have one more thing in common: an idiot as your leader <3
And lmao @ ManuElla congratulating Melania, pretending she’s a pride for Slovenia. One second I’m an escord, then suddenly the first lady is me! Indeed…
The Russians are just like the Americans: brainwashed and with no concept of human rights. I’m not surprised the closeted, self-hating gay Phillip Kirkorov and the stunning and talented but certainly not known for her brightness Ani Lorak are congratulating him.
The Swedes, on the other hand, know the tea! They would never elect someone like that.
