Good news: Greece has finally made a decision on their Eurovision 2017 act. The even better news — they’ve announced that Demy, fan favourite and Greece’s two-time wiwivision representative, will represent them in Kyiv! Broadcaster ERT officially confirmed the news today after her selection was reported in news earlier today.
It seems many of the rumours over the last few weeks had some truth, too. A few weeks ago, reports suggested a video-clip national final would take place. This would be between Demy and the group Stereo Soul, with the two acts fighting for thr ticket to Kyiv.
This seems to be what will happen after all, except Demy will be the only candidate. This means that the public will get to decide which song she will sing in Kyiv, according to ERT’s official press release. Demy has three English language songs which she will perform in the national final. The winning song will be selected by 100% televote.
Another rumour was that Demy has been working with Eurovision giants Dimitris Kontopoulos and Fokas Evangelinos. The duo have been involved with plenty of top-10 entries, including Sergey Lazarev and Helena Paparizou.
Once again, that has proved to be correct. The press release states that Kontopoulos has written all three national final songs for Demy, while Evangelinos will take care of the staging. We get the feeling this could be a Greek dream team!
It seems ERT have learned from their mistakes and want to get their Eurovision glory back. With Demy they’ve got a great, popular young singer and a strong team behind her. Greece are sending out the message — they want their Eurovision crown back!
So what do you think: is Demy a good choice from Greece? Do you think that Greece can make it two wins in a row in Kyiv? Let us know in the comments section below!
They’re thinking of introducing some sort of jury, too, for the National Final, but they can’t confirm it yet.
Which is good, since there’s gonna be a jury vote in Ukraine as well.
Amazing news! Where to start: Demy is a young and talented singer. She was a fan favourite to participate at ESC some time and now it’s the time. A great team behind (Dimitris Kontopoulos and Fokas Evangelinos). This can only have a good result and a promising entry. Another thing is that there will be a national final with one artist performing different songs after many years. Generally, it’s good we came back to NF, it’s always good when people have a voice and the entry is actually a song people like. Interesting fact, in 2004, 2005 and 2006 there… Read more »
Demy is for sure the best choice from Greece! I don’t know much about her but she seems kind, beautiful and she trully has a unique voice! Greece wants, after these past years, something different in order to win back the fame she had! Good job but I am not sure if they can win the competition..
@NickyB —
Let me put it this way. “Everything” got 55% of the televote ,whereas the other 3 songs split the remaining 45%. “This is the Night” got a whopping 81% of the televote, whereas the other 2 split the remaining 19%. With that big a margin, it’s pretty obvious that they’re directing the audience to support a specific song, and the “selection” is just a show to drive-up some interest/attention.
As for Kontopoulos’ songs sounding the same, I’ll concede that it may just be my opinion.
@Ern
1) The only common thing between “this is our night” and “you are the only one” is that they are both uptempo song. And “You are the only one” won the televoting , so it was a “winning song”
2) at the selection of Sakis Rouvas in 2009 “right on time” was a fantastic song and that is the one that should have won. At the selection of Anna Vissi in 2006 “welcome to the party” was the big favorite to win before the final so it was not obvious that “everything” will win
It is not fair what happened with Stereo Soul, they knew that they will sing in tv show, and after that they were told they are out. Just make internal selection, there’s no need to pretend that the viewers decide.
What drama? There was no drama! This was the most UN-dramatic selection for Greece in years. Also, when we actually get to hear the 3 songs, I bet that only ONE will be good and the other two will be awful. They know exactly what song they want Demy to sing, and they’re only pretending to have a “selection.” It will be very obvious the second we hear the songs. This is exactly what happened with Anna Vissi in 2006 and Sakis Rouvas in 2009. Only ONE song was tolerable, while the others were just awful. Also, Fokas Evangelinos does… Read more »
I think that in Kiev will win a man with an energetic song because it will be the chinese year of the fire rooster. Prepare for Montenegro 2018.
@Robyn Gallagher
This is Greece playing it very clever
Wow! Top model alert! Seriously, she’s gorgeous!
Awesome! I hope Demy has a dance song in store because I know she can deliver either a ballad or a banger. Greece is in safe hands this year 🙂
@Polegend Godgarina
“Commercial flop” ??? You must be joking. More than 40 million views for the videos, a massive radio hit in Russia topping several major radio charts for months, top 20 in the national airplay chart for more than 5 months, number 1 in the annual download chart of the year.
Top 20 at the iTunes chart of several countries https://www.instagram.com/p/BFbTGz_w6Zd/?taken-by=lazarevsergey
If this is not a major hit then what is?
Matt
With system of voting from 2009 chance for win Russia is low, especialy with new voting system from 2016. Juries will always push hard other countries to defeat Russia points in televote.
@ NickyB – the people voted for the performance, the song was outdated and a commercial flop… So let’s hope Demy’s song sounds NOTHING like the outdated 2016 Russian song.
It will bring them back to final for sure. But will it win? Probably no.
It’s nothing innovative, plain simple unremarkable pop. With stronger material she could do well, but if it ‘s anything cliché like this song or her other work it will mid 15 place again.
i love love love eurovision taking itself so seriously this year this is great news
This is solo boooring. But they going to the final, they always do????
It at least gives Greece a chance…
bloody hell i am just glad they finally chose someone
@nn
I actually noticed that in 2006 Russia finished 2nd, in 2007 3rd, and in 2008 1st with the artist from 2006.
In 2015 Polina placed 2nd, this year Sergey 3rd. Now, had Polina returned… Who knows?
One time agan!!! WHY chose the artist first and not the song!!!!
@Nn
And how do you know that? -.-
I am afraid this will be rather plain and simple pop – nothing innovative. Last year was great from Greece. They dared mire regardless of the result
Hot woman though 😉 so other straight male fans should take note 🙂 many of us too – as well as many female fans
Winner this year wili be some scandinavian countries I think Sweden or EBU baby Australia. No chance for Greece or some eastern countries like Russia,Armenia.
I think most people saw this coming. She’ll definitely bring them back to the final but I hope if the songs are pop they are something more unique and less cliche.
@Aaran well it seems that the rest of Europe doesn’t share your opinion about “You are the only one” since it won the televoting receiving 3 points and above from every participating country.
At the same time it was the second most downloaded song in Russia for 2016.
So let’s hope that Demy will have a song like that.
Demy’s a great choice! I still listen to her Greek version of If Love Was A Crime. I just hope they don’t give her a song similar to You Are The Only One. She deserves better.
Great news. Well done Greece. 🙂
GREECE IS OFFICIALLY BACK! I know it’s too soon given we don’t have a song yet, but I’m putting all my bets on something amazing and at least a top 7 finish for Greece this year!
You must be joking. Drama never ends in Greece.
A good choice.
Good to hear, but unfortunately all song choices in English? How boring…let’s have some songs that are 50/50 or where the chorus is Greek or something! It’s like the Greeks no longer value their language. Please, no generic cliche pop songs. Something unique, catchy, with some Greek realness is in order! Good luck, Greece! 😀
Greece is coming for blood. They might not want to win for financial reasons, but they clearly want to do well, and the selection of a multi-awarded popstar proves it. They’d better give her a fantastic song.
Yay! 🙂
She has perfect songs with Greek rappers. Why she won’t sing with them their songs? Why we will listen next ESC-2005-Kontopoulos-akaKirkorov-song? Eurovision is still the same every year. Many women with songs by ESC “dream teams” from Sweden, Greece or Russia. Its boring, I think that everyone would be happy to listen something non-Eurovision, something new, different, original, provocative. Choose one rapper from her previous cooperation, make a great song like her previous and you can be in TOP 10. With next typical ESC song you won’t be in TOP 10.
Demy is a fantastic choice..Young, talented and very popular especially to the young people.She, Tamta and Eleni Foureira would be the best choices for Greece anyway. Good news. It deepends on the song. I dont trust Kontopoulos. He can write beautiful songs but sometimes…. is dissapointing remember this is our night for sakis rouvas in 2009 for example. So good luck to Demy and hope Kontopoulos will give her an unforgetable good song.
English again? I think atl east one song should be in Greek and another maybe 50:50!
12 points to her looks – sexy woman 😉
Amazing mews!The best news for Greece ,Demy can win!
Good luck to lovely Greece!
We won in Kyiv in 2005 with Helena Paparizou with the same ”dream team”…Can we do it again in Kyiv? ???? Why not…Fingers crossed!! ????
Maybe it’s time for Greece win again.Cool choice.She is so pretty and I gues we’ve found Next Top Model
With love from Armenian from Germany
Yeah buddy! This will be awesome.
Seems like Greece really took notes from not qualifying! It truly is the dream team and she could easily get into the top 5
I alitheia moiazei psema….!
Finally,ERT made a good choice.
Given that Kiev is a good city for Greece and that near Demy will be Kontopoulos and Evangelinos…she could win the Eurovision!
TOP 10 FOR GREECE AGAIN 😉 THE FACT THAT DIMITRIS KONTOPOULOS AND FOKAS EVAGGELINOS HAVE WORKED WITH MANY EUROVISION STARS AND NEVER FAILED ENTERING TOP 10 SAYS IT ALL! <3
Excellent. Just as it should have been all along.
Now give her a song worthy of a finish in the top-half. If it’s as good as “Rodino Oneiro”, she could finish in the top 5, depending on what the other countries send.
About time ERT finally made their minds up.
Wow! Great news!
Greece ticks all the boxes this year.
Top 5 for Greece
