Hungry Hearts loiseau lenfant cover mariam myriam

They’re the breakout stars of Melodi Grand Prix 2016, known for their musicality, creativity and ability to make any song their own.

And on Thursday The Hungry Hearts — Norway’s most beloved avant-garde performance group — lived up to their reputation again, dropping four incredibly contemporary covers of “L’oiseau et l’enfant”.

The covers, which you can hear on Spotify, take Marie Myriam’s 1977 Eurovision winner to another level, adding modern beats, synthesised sounds and that signature Hungry Hearts edge.

Showing their respect for their many French fans and all those who love the original, they keep it in French and they keep it magical — fabuleux!

“It is a brilliant song and one of our all-time favourites,” lead singer Tonje Gjevjon tells us. “It is also a song that we could have made — except for the lyrics of course. Marie Myriam sings like a goddess. And it needed a boost 40 years after!”

A few days before the official release of the covers, the group teased the music with a brief snippet on the wiwibloggs Instagram.

We staged a contest asking our readers to guess the cover based on the opening bars. It was incredibly difficult, and our readers made a series of guesses on both our web site and Instagram account.

Among other songs, they guessed Alexander Rybak’s “Fairytale”, Emmelie de Forest’s “Only Teardrops”, Margaret Berger’s “I Feed You My Love” and Dana International’s “Diva”.

We received more than 60 responses — but only ONE of you had the instincts and intuition to get it right — and win a fierce “My Life Is Madness” t-shirt and signed CD.

And the winner is…ANDERS in Sweden! We have your e-mail address and will be in touch to get you your prizes.

As for now, let us know: Are you loving The Hungry Hearts’ latest cover? Are you looping it on Spotify? Shout it out in the comments section below.

@Purple Mask:
I’m totally with you. A great song, many years ago is still remembered. One of my favourite songs and the last victory for France. Interesting covers, with contemporary elements. They are great! Not to mention that the song remained in French. Great job from Hungry Hearts!

I’m glad that song from 1977 is still remembered. It was a well-deserved winner. 🙂

I wish I joined in as I am a big fan of a lot of old-school Eurovision songs (I actually made a wallpaper in my work PC with a text that reads L’oiseau et L’enfant).

But yeah no one would have expected this as a lot of the comments I read in the older thread were suggesting songs from the past 15-20 years.
