Romania’s Selectia Nationala 2017 kicked off last week with the call for submissions. And there’s at least one big name in the mix, as Estonia’s Stig Rästa has submitted the song “We Were Young” for consideration. He won’t be singing it. Instead that honour goes to an underground Romanian singer who has chosen to remain anonymous for the time being.

We’ve obtained an exclusive, 15-second teaser of the song, which you can listen to below, and have tried to find out more about this unexpected collaboration.

Estonian singer-songwriter Stig Rästa is best known for “Goodbye to Yesterday” — his duet with Elina Born that finished 7th at Eurovision 2015. The underground Romanian artist approached Stig about a potential collaboration because he felt Stig’s music most resonated with his own style. After a preliminary discussion, the Romanian travelled to Tallinn where the two recorded the song over two days. Both the songwriter and the singer were very happy with the result.

The track was written especially for Selectia Nationala. While the mysterious singer hasn’t submitted a song to Romania’s selection before, he’s been following Eurovision on television. His favourite songs are Luminita Anghel and Sistem’s “Let Me Try”, Hovi Star’s “Made of Stars” and, of course, Elina and Stig’s “Goodbye To Yesterday”. This last track was the one that made him contact the songwriter for a collaboration.

The Romanian says that “We Were Young” marks a departure from his signature sound, which tends to be more sombre. Since things have been looking up for him lately, he sought to reflect his sense of balance and peace.

What are your thoughts about the snippet and Stig’s chances to represent Romania with “We Were Young”? And do you have any inkling as to who the Romanian artist might be?

Not this disgraceful creature infecting other countries’ NFs. Seriously, his sound is so dull and stale that nearly nobody in Europe bothered to vote for his composition in 2016.

escAU, it clearly speaks about that mistery Romanian singer: that person is the one doing sombre songs, not Stig. Read more carefully

If you think Stig only does sombre, check out the popular smash track ‘miss calculation’ he wrote and produced for Elina Born a few years ago (click link) it’s fun pop 🙂
