In a world that grows more divided by the day, Ukraine are asking us to put our differences aside. On Monday UA:PBC and the EBU revealed the slogan and logo for Eurovision 2017. The message they want to send is “Celebrate Diversity”. It’s an evolution of last year’s “Come Together”, whilst the logo adds traditional Ukrainian elements in the message.
The logo, created by two Ukrainian agencies, could be a real standout. It’s based on the traditional Ukrainian necklace, the Namysto. Namysto represents protection, beauty and health, with each bead on the necklace having a unique design. That ties in with the diversity and individuality that Ukraine wants to celebrate this year.
It’s also going to be tied in with the creativity of the 43 acts that will take to the stage in Kyiv.
Eurovision 2017 Logo & Slogan: “Celebrate Diversity”
Jon Ola Sand, Executive Supervisor of the EBU, explains:
“The notion of celebrating diversity builds on last year’s theme of ‘Come Together’ and is at the heart of Eurovision values. It is all-inclusive and all about countries around Europe, and beyond, joining together to celebrate both our common ground and our unique differences, as well as some great music.”
Incorporating this beautiful and meaningful logo based on a traditional amulet gives not only a sense of history and heritage but also a modern look and feel.”
Expectations that the creative aspects of the contest would be revealed soon were high, with the 2017 Semi Final allocation draw to take place tomorrow.
NTU have got in early though, so we know what to expect come tomorrow’s draw. Hopefully we’ll get to see a bit more of the logo “in motion”!
SOCIAL MEDIA REACTIONS
@wiwibloggs I love it! It represents the spirit of Eurovision perfectly and the orthodox pattern necklace represents Ukraine so good as well

@wiwibloggs slogan is great while logo is terrible
— Dima Førest (@DimaDeForest) January 30, 2017
Finally, the New Logo and slogan, I could wait for something more colorfully but, that’s nice. Looks like something mathematic https://t.co/J7HNF9iOhA

Me mola tanto el eslogan como el logo ?????? https://t.co/8whTPfCjIL

@wiwibloggs Slogan is great! Logo is awful.

What do you think of “Celebrate Diversity” as the slogan, and have NTU have come up with a good logo? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below!
I didn’t think of the design in each bead of the necklace. The idea of representing the colours of a flag in the bead and the designs inside is genious!! I hope they do sth like that! Very interesting!
Russian-Armenian coalition of historicians!
if you’re so knowledgeanle about our history and even about design (yes, you fikri) why don’t you prove your knowledge and announce Russian participant for ESC? don’t tell me mightly Russians switched on chicken mode and won’t come to your Ukrainian party 🙂 that will be a real shame
Hayastan
you’re trying to be smart and to cite historical documents? lol
first you have to learn that oukraina (borderland) has nothing to do with Ukraine because of emphasis and language rules. are you trying to sold katsapic word instead of Ukrainian? that’s lame
I hope Jamala will be involved at tgis year’s contest in some way. It would be great if she wrote a theme song too like Emmelie DeForest did in 2014!
Another generic corporate sounding slogan. What’s next “Strength in Unity” or something like that?
As for the logo, it’s a good idea, not a fan of the colour scheme though.
The color of the skin is just the visible part of diversity, eastern countries like Ukraine and others have a lot of diversity, even if many people are white, they still come from different cultures.
I like the idea that each bead is a different country, and together the beads form a necklace. I think the slogans/mottos have become kind of repetitive if I am honest though. Unity is important but I would just like to see more themes explored in future contests 🙂
It’s almost three years as ongoing debacle-spectacle from (some) russian-armenian activists follows almost every article about aforementioned country. ‘Don’t bring politics’, but bring chauvinists and bias history crafted aside against one particular country, ahem. ‘They should’ve been killed’ and 10 televote points from the same side for ‘but everyone dies’. I guess in perspective this can produce tangible booing once, sorry, twice more in Kyiv and that will be the way how part of audience will celebrate this ‘diversity’ coming from east. And on contrary, Europe will vote for Russia, cz everyone loves drama so why don’t let it hit… Read more »
I’m not particularly fond of the shade of red. It doesn’t look very inviting (its actually even a little “aggressive”).
I wish the shade would be lighter/brighter, a little more “happy”, this one is a bit.. menacing.
Good ideas, probably good reflected visually (I hope for some dynamism), but slogan could’ve been more stylish. Though, seems like some people wanted to see ‘Whiplash & Obey’ or what?
I actually wouldn’t be disappointed if they did away with the annual slogan altogether. It really serves no purpose, and they struggle each year to come up with something as blandly innoccuous as other years. They’re rapidly running out of clichés.
The whole cookie-cutter mould recipe for Eurovision productions is a bit stale. The EBU should turn more power over to the host broadcaster to make the shows more unique and to add character to each year’s broacast.
Slogan is nice but the logo is awful
@Cermandt
Rus’ (????) is not Russia (??????).
Back to the main subject of the article. I like the slogan, though it would be better. I believe there will be a time when we are out of slogans. Seriously. The logo for me is amazing! I loved it! I have no problem with red and black, instead there’s a change of colour, as we were used to colours as blue and pink the last couple of years. If I’m not mistaken, the last time we had sth similar was in 2012 with this warm orange. Also loved it. I won’t lie, I was bored with all this blue… Read more »
@Marcus (Day One) : I find the idea about putting the symbols of each country in each bead creative, though I think there would be no necklace at the end. However, you have Interesting ideas about how they can put a flag in this logo. @The Anders : I really liked how you expressed your opinion. I also believe there’s almost no originality any more, songs follow certain music patterns and many songs are similar to each other musically. We don’t usually see a country reflect its tradition and its history by its song, like years ago and it’s a… Read more »
@Anabela SakamTe
I applaud the sentiments of the slogan. The logo is fine.
Purple Mask, yes, you missed the point.
@vlvikin Have you even read the link you’ve sent me? LOL Litopis Rus’sky za Ipat’skim spiskom. And where is it mentioned that it was written in a language composed in the 19th century?
@Hayastan I don’t think that it’s the right place to discuss similar topics. But if you read something in your small Armenian institute it doesn’t means that you know the facts. We know how your history is biased toward some nations. At the end we are talking about the same history which claims Karabakh is Armenian while whole world knows where it really belongs to.. Free to laugh much more louder now.
@vlvikin lol. And also there are Ukrainians on Noah’s Arch. Actually a pair of them.
@Hayastan
Russian documents? What for documents?
The oldest mention of the word ukraina dates back to the year 1187.
https:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Hypatian_Codex
Hypatian_Codex – it is Ukrainian document
And more about documents:
https:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Constitution_of_Pylyp_Orlyk
One of the first Constitution was written in Ukraine and on Ukrainian language
I just hope that the stage design will be shown tommorow. Thats the thing i wait for the most after arena has been shown!
Uninspiring slogan. Come on. We have had the same come together theme for five years now. Still not as bad as the logo. Makes the Chargers’ look good.
@Mil Now I am laughing out loud. Both in Hypatoan Codex and Galician–Volhynian Chronicle and other ancient Russian documents the word OUKRAINA (which means BORDER) refers to all borders of the kingdom, firstly the ones with enemies. In some documents even the lands close to Finno-Ugric peoples, like Chuds, are also called OUKRAINA. Greetings to borderland from a historian of Slavic nations!
That being said, my dream contest would be called “Back to Basics”: Take all the mega-event dimensions away, bring back the orchestra, take away all the fancy visual effects and bombastic stage productions, and let the songs speak for themselves.
And urge the delegations to play it less safe and send music with a more edge and originality.
I like the slogan inasmuch as I prefer the contest to be diverse in terms of musical style.
Unfortunately the musical diversity has been under pressure in the last couple of years with a lot of songs using the same clichés and the same musical and lyrical patterns. But I hope that the songs will actually reflect the slogan this time.
SOMEONE PHOTOSHOP SAME 14 FLAGS INTO 14 DIFFETENT STYLE LITTLE BALLS.plesse . thank you
I like the logo
The colors quite fit each other!
Whatever it is,far more original than last year
@Hayastan
Then you should read The Kyivan Chronicle, where the first mention of Ukraine – ukraina – is found. It was written in 1187.
Is it still makes you laugh?
It looks like a croissant
@Denis
Yes. This year I see (hear) many songs with messages about unity, friendship, “helping hand” and supporting. And this is very good. We all people
Give Ukraineans a break, why do you insist that it should be pink, can’t you survive without pink? ESC is for heterosexuals families too. And black and red exist in many cultures (like ”Le rouge et le noir” by Stendhal, where red is passion and black is death).
Ukraine decided that the focus is not on color? Is this so new for you? Can’t you understand anything that is not in all the colors of the rainbow? Must be all colors otherwise you feel something is missing?
Don’t get the on line fuss. Esc has always been about celebrating diversity, that’s the reason it was created. Now with people who don’t want diversity running the world the message is needed more than ever.
Maybe in Poland?

I do not see much difference between the Nazis and the Communists. Is that the Nazis were able to make good roads and cars
@vlvikin Yeah baby, the Soviets used to fight against Nazis, including OUN-UPA in Ukraine. Unfortunately the Soviets were way too generous towards collaborators of Nazis – Crimean Tatars. Stalin just deported them to Middle Asia where they had come from. He should have killed him. I’m a grandson of a WWII victim. My Granddad was killed in the battle for Sevastopol. F*CK the Nazis.
@Mil It is too funny when the words ANCIENT and UKRAINIAN meet in one sentence. I work at Armenian Institute of Matenadaran where 18,000 ancient books are kept. They contain the history from Urartu to Medieval Europe and you can find no such words as UKRAINE and UKRAINIANS before 18th century.
@Vladimir Putin a.k.a. the ULTIMATE thug of the Universe in you link Opponents of Ukrainian Insurgent Army: Soviet Union Nazi Germany and… In 1944-1945 the NKVD carried out 26,693 operations against the Ukrainian underground. These resulted in the deaths of 22,474 Ukrainian soldiers and the capture of 62,142 prisoners. During this time the NKVD formed special groups known as spetshrupy made up of former Soviet partisans. The goal of these groups was to discredit and disorganize the OUN and UPA. In August 1944 Sydir Kovpak was placed under NKVD authority. Posing as Ukrainian insurgents these special formations used violence against… Read more »
I like both slogan and logo. I think logo would look very good in motion. I don’t like dark hues, but probably they referred to black and red as two main colors Ukrainian traditional embroidery uses.
@Vladimir Putin a.k.a. the ULTIMATE thug of the Universe
Black and red are two main colors for traditional embroidery which is much more ancient than that flag you refer to. There are many traditional Ukrainian folk songs about red and black as symbols of joy and sadness.
Wiwi you should do that challenge :)) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lslvc3gk_eU
The logo is kinda ugly IMHO, it doesn’t really look like it belongs, but the slogan is nice.
Ultimately it really doesn’t matter much, as long as they put on a good show that’s what’s important.
By the way, that’s the Ukrainian Namyston naklace. I am glad they are using traditional elements as logo and the slogan “Celebrate Diversity” is a nice choice for a Song contest. Well done.
I don’t mind the logo actually …… It’s rather nice.
The slogan I can live without.
Cos we all know people will be booing in that arena…… Right?
Celebrate diversity my a**.
It looks fine. Can’t wait for May! 😀
@ESC123 political correctness under nazi flag? wow
@beccaboo1212 don’t you know what red and black colors mean in Ukraine? You will be pretty shocked. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrainian_Insurgent_Army I wonder why Russia, Israel, Belarus and Poland can take part in this farce. disgusting!
In the YouTube comments, of the anti-gay reaction to this slogan is quite shocking. I had actually interpreted the slogan to mean “Celebrate Diversity” of MUSIC and SONGS!!
Did I miss the point?
I mean, the colors are ok, but I was expecting more than just black and red. Or is that black and pink? Maybe a pinkish-red? Hmm.
Now ESC is about political correctness
Each bead has a different pattern, this is the diversity.
I like the simplicity of colors, it does not always have to be, pink, purple, turquoise, lilac, fuchsia, cyan, celestial blue, magenta, etc. Sometimes the diversity is not represented by color, but by pattern.
