Boris Covali wiwi jury Moldova 2017

The Wiwi Jury, our in-house panel of music unprofessionals, has landed in Chisinau. We’re here to listen to and judge the songs from Moldova’s national selection, O melodie pentru Europa. We start off with Boris Covali, who returns to the contest with “Calator” (Traveller), a Romanian-language song written by Romanian pop star Smiley. Will it put a smile on our faces or will it make us want to pack our bags? Let’s find out!

Boris Covali – “Calator” (Traveller)

“Calator” reviews

Anthony: Boris Covali is back after narrowly missing out on representing Moldova in 2014 with “Perfect Day”. “Calator” begins with a promising build-up and the chorus kicks in nicely. But once you’ve passed that, Boris ends up with the same issue as his previous attempt. The rest of the song just pleasantly plods along right to the end and there’s not a grandstand finish in sight.

Score: 7/10

Antranig: “Calator” isn’t the most memorable entry and quickly fades into the background when Boris isn’t singing. However, his vocals bring it to life and when he is singing, “Calator” packs a punch. The song compliments Boris perfectly and while I can’t see this making a big impact on the Eurovision scoreboard, it would be a respectable entry for Moldova.

Score: 7.5/10

Luis: Hey Boris, your summer vacation looks nice, where is it? Was it expensive? Would you recommend it? All of this comes to mind because “Calator” sounds like the background music of a tourism advert. There’s nothing impressive about it. Whilst the song is very pleasant, no part of it is memorable. But maybe Moldova’s tourism bureau will appreciate this.

Score: 4/10

Patrick: Here he is again, Boris Covali, AKA: the one that I never like. He’s tried so many times to represent Moldova, but has never brought a song worthy of the honour. I’m glad to hear Romanian used as it sounds quite beautiful, but the song doesn’t work with it. It’s quite dated and Boris is never as good live as he is recorded. Think Britney Spears as a guy, just less successful. Boy, am I bored.

Score: 3/10

Jason: “Calator” is sunny and cheerful, and Boris sings it well. However, the overall package is not memorable. The song sounds pretty much the same all the way through, and while it would work well as background music in a café, it does not have enough impact to succeed at Eurovision. A nice effort that swings wide off the mark.

Score: 5/10

I said that in another post. I’m not excited with the song, but I can’t tell it’s bad. The opposite.

I think it’s underrated. It reminds me of Liroje Zemren from Besa Krasniqi, which was also good.
