Way back in December, Norway’s Eurovision 2015 star Mørland announced through his Facebook page he’d be starting 2017 with weekly covers all through January, while he works on new material for later in December. Every Friday since, he’s put out a cover chosen from suggestions put forward by his fans and, due to illness, the last cover came out on February 1. So we thought it was the perfect time to recap his month in covers.

Cover 1: Say You Won’t Let Go – James Arthur

The first cover was British singer-songwriter James Arthur’s Number #1 hit single “Say You Won’t Let Go”. This take didn’t stray too far from the original, instead retreading the soulful vibe of the original and mirroring Arthur’s husky tone.

Cover 2: I Feel It Coming – The Weeknd Feat. Daft Punk

Unlike the electro-tones of the original, here Mørland takes a softer approach, backing the song with calming guitars and melodic piano over crashing synthesizers. Almost folksy in finish, this is a world away from the dancepop stylings of Daft Punk.

Cover 3: Cold Water – Major Lazer, MØ, Justin Bieber

From dancefloor banger to drowsy lullaby, “Cold Water” doesn’t make as clean a jump as the first two. Although at first the slowed down pace makes the piece more thoughtful, by song’s end you find yourself drifting off…too sleep.

Cover 4: I Don’t Wanna Live Forever – Taylor Swift & Zayn

Which is why Cover 4 is such a standout. Because in our boy’s capable hands, the slow sultry mid-tempo number is amped up to a fever pitch. Some questionable after effects added in the last minute aside, this really stands a long way ahead of the other covers.

That’s our take. What do you think of the January covers? Let us know in the comments below!

Oh, but I don’t really want him returning to Eurovision. “A Monster Like Me” is my favorite Eurovision song EVER, and in my top ten favorite songs of all time. I’m going to say he can’t top that, but I’d rather another album as perfect as “Make a Sail” than a diminishing return to a song contest. But I’m sure he’ll be amazing at whatever he chooses to do next.

Yes! I’ve been listening to all of these as they come out, this man has to be my favorite artist to ever come out of Eurovision! Maybe my favorite solo singer of all time, it’s either him or Lena. Every one of these covers is sublime! Can’t wait for whatever he does next!
