Discover Moldova

Moldova calling! The Wiwi Jury, our in-house panel of music unprofessionals, is in Chisinau, reviewing the songs from Moldova’s national selection O melodie pentru Europa 2017. Next up is the collaboration between Ethno Republic & Surorile Osoianu (The Osoianu Sisters) and their song “Discover Moldova”. Will it make us want to dive in to the small Eastern European country? Or just speed our journey back to the airport?  Let’s find out!

Ethno Republic & Surorile Osoianu – “Discover Moldova”

“Discover Moldova” reviews

Antranig: Their song certainly makes me want to “Discover Moldova”, provided that I’m getting an all-expense-paid trip. I adore the traditional musical style and this is a breath of fresh air in a national final that contains too many stereotypical Eurovision entries. This is three minutes of Moldovan paradise and could have plenty of success on a tourism campaign if Eurovision doesn’t work out.

Score: 10/10

Patrick: Well this is a bad recipe. They’ve taken a good looking girl who cannot sing, put her with four middle-aged housewives in traditional dresses, and given them all a cheap song about the wonders of Moldova. This is a mess and I’m worried that it could win given the sub-par competition. N to the O, to the NO.

Score: 0/10

Anthony: The song title may read like a tourism promotion slogan, but it’s not the fun-packed trip I’m looking for. “Discover Moldova” sounds like a folksy watered down version of Scooter’s 2004 national final entry “Jigga Jigga”. Ethno Republic’s lead singer kicks things off with her gentle solo, before the out-of-tune wailing from Surorile Osoianu kills the mood.

Score: 4.5/10

Luis: I’d rename this “Discover a Moldovan karaoke night”. It’s as if people were just taking the stage to sing any song they wanted without considering the other sounds. Ethno Republic begins with a kind of North Korean anthem, followed by the traditional folk from the Surorile Osoianu, and then there’s a section which seems to have been recorded in an open air market. I’m not sure such a mix is a good idea.

Score: 3/10

Jason: Have the Buranovskiye Babushki had work done? They look fab! But seriously, “Discover Moldova” is one of the best entries in O melodie pentru Europa 2017. The fusion of traditional musical elements with modern beats works really well here, and I think it would go down a storm with the Eurovision audience. Ethno Republic & Surorile Osoianu’s entry has the feel-good factor, which should never be underestimated.

Is anyone going to understand this at Eurovision when they listen to it for the first time?

In my opinion, this is one of the worst entries of the decade. Sorry group, but please go home.

My beloved song! THEY ARE MY FAVORITES. Don`t understand SunStroke project, they already bring to Moldova 22th place..If they will go, Moldova can be for the 4th time as non-qualifier. Only Ethno Republic, only fun!

This song and song from Sunstroke project only can get final for Moldova. They send simillar song in 2009 with ethno sound and they finished 13 th in final (that song deserved TOP 10 that year).
We had so many ballads this year so far, and that etno sound wili be different ,only song with ethno sound so far is song from Hungary.

Hope this song win! I give to this 7 points from Athens, Greece! It’s a happy and interesting song. It will be noticed, among all these ballads. Hope the best!
