Välkommen till Melfest! It’s now time for the Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — to turn our attention to Sweden’s Melodifestivalen, one of the biggest and boldest national finals. We start our Melfest 2017 journey with the eight acts competing in the Andra Chasen (second chance) round. And what better way to begin than with “Road Trip”, from comedy group De Vet Du. Read on to see what we thought!

About De Vet Du

Four-piece comedy group De Vet Du (“You know it”) have a reputation for humorous songs and YouTube videos. They are making their Melodifestivalen debut with “Road Trip”, written by the group themselves.

Wiwi Jury reviews “Road Trip”

Edd: As a lover of Sean Banan, Samir & Viktor and Freddy Kalas, it’s no shock that I’m in love with this. This is everything my friends are talking about when they say they love Eurovision: silly visuals, fun production and an intense feeling of happiness. I was a nervous wreck when I heard how epic the bass drop was, and by the time the key change came I had almost collapsed. This would be the song to save the Eurovision Ballad Contest.

Score: 9.5/10

Chris: If you’re going to make me laugh, make me laugh. If you’re going to wow me with staging, wow me. Don’t half-arse it the entire way. The general appeal of the song, I can kind of get, but “Road Trip” feels like such a let down after the likes of Sean Banan and Samir & Viktor. It needs something bigger than this — and for the love of God, dump that awful falsetto.

Score: 5.5/10

Luis: This is the most Swedish thing ever. And I’m loving it. De Vet Du are like a manual on how to do a proper novelty act. Fun, fresh, rightly stupid, with an earworm of a musical bridge. This is everything. Is this Sweden’s next entry? No way, but I can’t wait to see them in finalen. Because they are so qualifying, and you know it.

Score: 8/10

Deban: “Road Trip” is largely driven by visuals, lighting and clever staging. Their computer generated instrumentation holds a youthful appeal, but may fail to charm sophisticated ears. De Vet Du aren’t far from being a joke act. However, DJ Hunk’s presence makes it all very palatable.

Score: 4/10

Robyn: This song has really grown on me and I love it. The lyrics might be in Swedish (complete with a fart joke and curse words) but the Det Vet Du visual humour shines through and makes the performance appeal beyond the lyrics. It’s performances like this that make Melfest so special — it’s not there as a potential Eurovision entry, but it’s going to light up the Melfest tour.

Score: 8.5/10

Antranig: “Road Trip” is enjoyable viewing without actually being good at all. As I’m thinking about the positives, I think about the staging, the performance and basically anything but the song. When it qualified for Andra Chansen, my reaction was “at least we get to see DJ Hunk again”. That effectively sums up all “Road Trip” has to offer.

Score: 4/10

Forrest:  It’s difficult to figure out where to begin with this mess.  Various disparate noises just slam into each other throughout the whole track — the pseudo-rap verses, the oddly gravely pre-chorus, the pop drop with its poor falsetto, a backing track that sounds like it was composed by Owl City, and a key change at the end to top it all off.  De Vet Du and “Roadtrip” is a flashy stage show, but offers little substance or quality as a song.

Score: 3/10

William: When I look at these guys the phrase “bukkake at bedtime” comes to mind. DJ Hunk’s gym-honed body makes my teeth sweat and I can feel the blood rushing from my head southward. The performance is playful, frenetic and somehow endearing — which almost succeeds in making me forget the appalling vocals and cheap Ibiza production. Note that I said almost. This performance is made for the eyes, not the ears, and for that I can’t go beyond a 4.

Score: 4/10

We will not se this song in the final. If we look at the swedish spotyfychart 26/2 can we se that FO&O will win the duell on Saterday. But things can still happen.

Luis, it is whith humor in mind he doesn’t wear a shirt. Like, people that takes them self to serionsly. And it is so unswedish to show your body for no good reason if you have a great body. It has to be humor or an other really good reason. He is supposed to be a caracter, thats all.

Cross this song with “Kizunguzungu” and what do you get… a parody for Wiwibloggs! 🙂
P.S. I might make something for Wiwi later this year, and see if they like it. Might have to buy the rights to this one though, will see. If it’s for a parody it should be okay. Let’s dooo this!!

Funny coincidence, but first two words, pronounced together ”devet” mean ”nine” in Croatian.

De vet du, means “You know it” in English. The words De vet, are simply a youthful pronounciation of the words Det vet, De in this case is not They.

It’s a total shame this gimmick went to Andra Chansen and Dinah didn’t. 100% televoting is never a good idea.

DJ Hunk forgot his 6 packs at home.

I was thinking a long time what the two girls at the end might represent in their yellow customes.. Now I found the answer: http://www.foamtechchina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Foam-Car-Wash-Brush-1.jpg 🙂

I think, this might do well in Andra Chansen in contrast to the boyband/young boy bands and singer who sound very similar. But still no chance against the top acts this year.

@Robyn Gallagher. No, “De vet du” means “You know it.” The word “vet” does mean “to know”, but only when it’s about facts etc.

Think most swedes would agree that that its “you know it” in the way they pronounce it.. if it had been “they know you” it would be “de känner dig” since its more correct in swedish. “De Vet Du” could be rewritten as “Det Vet Du” but in informal language here we often ignore the t in the word “det” (it) and thats what people are confused with 🙂

This is the only MF-song i’ve been listening to after the show. It’s the most catchy. It’s fun and makes me wanna dance. Perfection!

This grew on me a lot! The song is catchy and the performance is very fun. It will do fine in Andra Chansen.

I like fun but there has to be something of musical merit, somewhere. There isn’t. You still have to listen to it…

Such a cool song that feels really Swedish.
It’s doing very well on Spotify. It’s not winning but Swedes are loving this. Good for Det vet du.

@kris – ”The song has raked up over 1 million views but the juries are gonna kill its chances.”

I know. That’s why funny songs and novelty acts have little to no chance of winning any finals which also contains jury votes. Shame, cause one or two of those would certainly lighten-up the ESC stage.

@wiwibloggs. Christer Björkman has taken over the lead of the organisation for ESC2017. He will lead the work etc. And plan the show.

I don’t like this song at all, I was actually surprised that they qualified to the Andra Chansen. But I have to admit that the shirtless guy looks adorable! xD

Guys I no longer see tweets from wiwibloggs on my mobile. Earlier I could read them on the site itself. Is it an issue with my phone’s browser or have they changed the interface??
It would be good if I could read them here itself……I don’t have a twitter account. 🙁

As Adele says, make music for the ears, not for the eyes. This “song” is a joke in every way. I don’t think any of them have a genuine passion for music, they’re just taking it as a cabaret (that left me very unimpressed).

the performance is stupid….too unserious. And bare chesteed men is always a NO for me!

BUT the song itself is quite cool I think…as long I don’t have to watch their silly antics. It is fresh and different. And stands a bit out…..t’s a nice song. And a change from the usual samey meainstream pop in MF

Actually, this would be a *perfect* song to send to ESC at this point. There are so many ballads and moving songs. And even most uptempo songs aren’t actually funny. France has an uptempo song, but the lyrics are quite bittersweet. Italy is funny, but in an intellectual, sarcastic way. Most proposed uptempo songs are love songs or dance songs. This song is utterly silly, funny and unpretentious in a way no other selected song is (Sure, Gunther would do, but he ain’t selected). While Mariette definitely has a, generally speaking, stronger entry, I think this one would be the… Read more »
