Back in February she revealed that she was working on a bilingual version of her Eurovision 2017 song “Requiem”.
And today Alma made good on her promise, releasing a 38-second snippet of the revamp, which includes juste un petit peu d’anglais in a part of the chorus.
“Would you take me to paradise,” she asks in the new lyrics. “With you nothing ever dies. You take my smile and make it bright, before the night erases the light, I won’t go below silver skies, the only darkness is in your eyes.”
The addition of English lyrics isn’t the only change.
The overall production seems lighter and somehow punchier, with the new instrumentation reducing the weight of the song. It keeps the sexiness of the original, but sounds more fresh and current.
Alma will release the full English-language version of her song in the days ahead.
What are you thinking? Are you loving the inclusion of English-language lyrics? Do you think that they make the song more accessible? Or would you like Alma to go back to all-French? And what do you make of the revamped production? Let us know in the comments section asap!
Alma’s “Requiem” (English lyrics)
Would you take me to paradise
With you nothing ever dies
You take my smile and make it bright
Before the night erases the light
I won’t go below silver skies
The only darkness is in your eyes

If you are lucky you’re going to get your entire profits from

Dr. Irving Wolther, a German guy who made his Ph.D. about the Eurovision Song Contest, proved statistically that mixed-language songs have a worse chance at winning, whereas there are no significant differences between English and native language songs in that regard. Do you think “Molitva”, praised by the entire Balkan for its lyrics, would have worked if it had been half in English? Or “Grande Amore” if it hadn’t been entirely in Italian? This could have been France’s “Molitva” or “Grande Amore”. All the atmosphere of and positive clichés about one country packed into one catchy song. With this weird… Read more »

NO! NO! NO! NO!
Why Mr Edoardo Grassi? WHY?
French broadcaster doesn’t want to win, that’s why they ruined the song.
Bye bye Alma, Bye bye France.
Please France, make a petition inside your country, tell them to keep french, and give up english.
The worst thing is that english lyrics don’t bring any information, those are the most useless words in the entire world. The english lyrics don’t make me understand anything about the message, why do we hear them???????
no no no no no!
No no to the revamp, and no no no to the English lyrics!
What a flop indeed!
Absolutely unneeded change. Not bad, but obsolete.
Like I’ve said before, this is a french song about ”amour”, everybody can understand that, why create some english lyrics that are still not clear : is it a breakup, happy love, sad love, the beginning or the end of the relationship???? We still don’t know not even after we hear the english lyrics. Such a failure!!!
This song wasnt my favourite anyway BUT the English is a bit shoe horned in there like it’s a requirement. People express themselves better in their own languages and i for one feel that the diversity of language in Eurovisión helped reinforce it both as a song contest and a celebration of the diversity that exists in Europe. It’s funny that two of the front runners’ songs this year are not in English and it shows that words alone are insufficient to convey emotions and meaning.
Too bad!
France had a good shot at top 5 for me, but this sounds way too light & the english breaks the special feeling I had with this song..
Now France will, once again end low at the ranking
Requiem is such a quintessentially French-sounding song.
The English does not work at all.
noooooooooooooooooooooo the english ruins the song why why why????????? : c
I hope she don’t do that, French is beautiful language.. If people really like the song, they can easily find translation of lyrics..
This song didn’t need a revamp, in my opinion. The original video was great, and her acoustic piano live performance also worked. Both are in French. So why the changes exactly?
nobody has already listen the final version, so calm down all, you will see after, now it s just a snipset, calm down
tommy is angry lol, use your energy for other things, it s
unnecessary to become hater like that, alma doesn t deserve the last sorry
Madame, ne changez pas le chanson, s’il vous plait. C’est tres mal -_-
This was one of my favorite songs, but not anymore. The English wouldn’t be as much of a problem if it were just for a powerful ending chorus, but it looks like all the choruses are going to be in English! And changing the instrumental?! That was my absolute favorite part of the song! Why France? Why?
@SADAS: I don’t think it’s plagiarism, there are similarities but they are quite different… Actually I think that song you posted is way better than Belgium’s, haha! 🙂
English was really not necessary. But good revamp, as far as the instrumentation is concerned.
French is second language of esc, and everybody can tell its a song about love because everybody knows what ”amour” means. Why did she needed english????? It was a mistake to copy Amir, its different. Anyway somebody must be #26.
stop crying all , the song stay the same, just a little bit lyrics in english to be understood by the majority of people who will watch their tv it’s a good idea. It works for amir last year.
Just pick one language or it won’t be taken seriously. It’s so stupid to mix, nobody likes that.

BELGIUM PLAGIARIZED
Wow, that is a terrible decision. I hope it doesn’t go through.
They should keep it in French!! Please!! The song is my second favourite.. 🙁
Sad. I thought we could have Paris 2018, but after this…I’m done..
She ran the risk of being disqualification if she performed the original version, as a demo was performed before 1/1/16, making a revamp necessary.
Why Alma???? Why?? The song was perfect in French… I’m really disappointed.
I don’t even like the new sound… no way. I think it is a mess, used to listen the original and then compare it whit this…. no they topped.
I was sure France could do very well in Kiev but now I’m not so sure anymore
English sounds as out of place as in last year’s Francesca Miechelin song
ne pas anglais, s’il vous plait!!!
Nooooooooooooooooo! Change it back to french only. The revamp song is a mess.
Alma & Amir (accoustic session):

Didn’t listen to her fans and went ahead and anglicized part of the song…ruined the whole atmosphere of the song. Triste, tres, tres trust! C’est dommage! Just dropped in my ranking! 🙁
No english pls.
It sounds so weird, she jumps into English straight from French and the transition isn’t smooth at all. Her pronounciation is far from being good as well, her accent is quite notorious.
Please France, do the smart thing and keep it as it is. Adding 10 seconds of poor English won’t actually benefit you.
Perfect example of what you should NOT do.
Some people overreacting. I like it. It’s fine. In fact, maybe I’d like a full English version released (not for the contest, just for listening).
Something that irks me more is the added instrumental, now THAT seems more forced.
WHY!? JUST WHY!?
those lyrics are the epitome of BADDDD
PLEASE KEEP IT IN FRENCH, FRANCE! PLEASE.
My God, what have they done?
The new instrumentation, the cheesy (and pointless) English lyrics… What a mess. The charm is lost. “Requiem” indeed.
I’m so disappointed.
Ugh, I don’t like the English lyrics. Also, what’s the point of having like four phrases in English? IMO either make it properly bilingual (at least 25% English) or just leave it.
OMG NO THEY RUINED IT! PRAYING FOR THEM TO CHSNGE IT BACK ENTIRL IN FRENCH!
Montenegro came out on the Eurovision Youtube channel. The video is quite good, I gotta say.
Bad decision.
It’s verbose. Cut down the words, give it a hook, then it might go somewhere.
Big Mistake
Oh no French suits this kind of song much better. These English lyrics are extremely cheesy and awkward even if she’s actually able to sing them well 🙁
