Over the past month the Wiwi Jury has listened to, reviewed and rated all 43 42 of the songs in Eurovision 2017. In the end one entry has come out on top: Italy’s Francesco Gabbani and his song “Occidentali’s karma”. Belgium’s Blanche and France’s Alma follow in second and third place.
Francesco Gabbani‘s catchy social commentary inspired high praise and high scores from many members of the Wiwi Jury, with 28 rating it 9/10 or higher. Overall, the Wiwi Jury gave Italy’s entry an average score of 8.96. This is the second highest Wiwi Jury score for a Eurovision entry — Only Loreen’s “Euphoria” has a higher score.
Jury member William had this to say about “Occidentali’s karma”:
“Occidentali’s Karma” ticks so many boxes — I need several pens and one very large scroll to evaluate it. Contemporary yet somehow throwback, its digital opening gives way to an orchestral sound accented with drum and guitar. The chorus is an ear worm of the first order and, despite the explicit social critique, the song remains uplifting and radio-friendly. Perfectly pitched and delivered with unrivalled charisma, it’s a light song with a weighty message, and it speeds by in a whoosh of smiles and tapping feet. A deserving and likely winner. 9/10
Following in second place was Belgium’s Blanche with the sultry “City Lights”. The Wiwi Jury gave it an average score of 8.67. This is the fourth highest Wiwi Jury Eurovision score ever, coming just after Sergey Lazarev’s 8.7 from last year.
Jury member Luis was impressed by Belgium’s entry:
I can’t believe this is the same country who sent Patrick Ouchene, Iris or Axel Hirsoux. Belgium has metamorphosed from ugly duckling into Eurovision powerhouse in a very short time, and Blanche is another proof of that. “City Lights” blends innocence with darkness and creates a moody atmosphere, which is tailor-made for Blanche’s deep vocals. This entry is so intelligently crafted that I could go on for hours on how delighted I am to have it at Eurovision 2017. 9.5/10
And in third place was France’s Alma with “Requiem”. Alma’s breezy Parisian style impressed jury members enough for an average score of 7.92. This is the same score the jury gave Australia’s Dami Im in 2016.
Jury member Forrest was feeling Alma’s style:
“Requiem” is remarkable in that it manages to be both dramatic while retaining an almost summery feel. The revamp did well to add a bit of weight with some heavier strings, but the song remains light, fresh with a wonderful feel-good vibe. The offbeat instrumentation can be a bit jarring at first, but “Requiem” quickly develops a rhythm of its own, and Alma’s vocals wind through the track as elegantly as the music video’s dancers up the side of Parisian buildings. This simply oozes class and will undoubtedly provide France with another strong showing in Kyiv. 8.5/10
Down at the other end, Lithuania came in last place, with the jury only awarding an average of 3.31 for Fusedmarc‘s song “Rain of Revolution”. The 1980s-style horn-infused track did not impress the jury so much.
The Wiwi Jury reviewed the original 43 songs of the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in March 2017, based on studio recordings, music videos and live performances, where available. The Wiwi Jury rankings are not intended as a prediction of the eventual results in Kyiv. Rather, it’s an indication of what our favourites were.

Why doesnt Europe understand the qualitiy of music?Guys pay attention to the Armenia’s song and you will realize that the voice like that girl has differ from century to century!! Just our ears are used to simple melody..Armenia is on my top as always!!!
Imo Portugal, Australia, Georgia, Poland and GB are underrated, Italy, FYR Macedonia, Sweeden and Israel are overrated.
Portugal is waaaaay too low. I hope he places at least in the top 5 in the real contest, because he deserves it.
Muito obrigado pela 23º lugar, apreciamos o vosso bom gosto. Saudações de Portugal, nós celebramos a diversidade !!
Portugal.placing is the major flaw…it’ll be top five for sure.
Romania was meant to have more than 31st place! What do you think ?
I´ve never been a fan of “Modern Talking”-Style, thus I hope, Estonia won´t get too many points instead of good Romanian entry. Azerbaijan and FYROMacedonia R in my top ten, if they do well on stage,… the live stuff I´ve watched, is bad, thus until now not in my top 10. Hungary is in my top 5. UK gives me still goosebumps, also in my top 5. Austria and Germany know to deliver live, hope, TV will also transmitt that feeling,…think, they R underrated. Austria´s Nathan should qualify,… see them on 15. Will there B dark horses, who will B… Read more »

Salvador -Portugal
Many of the good songs are ranked so low here and many bad songs ranked high
Hello Wiwibloggs!
First of all, want to thank William, Robin, and all the crew for the hard job on judging the entries, pretty much the most fun pieces from this site ????
Secondly, I recollected (and cleaned up, #typoking speaking) the comments/reviews of my own, you may look at them here!
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1D2_VEUGnqf4irboACNcyPlkoVct2TZGP1F0wyQ0UV9I/edit?usp=sharing
Hope you have a blast in Kiev!
Jury what??? Where????
FRANCE !!!
It would be neat if Italy won in 2017. They last won 27 years ago, and then 26 years before that. So let’s have Italy win this year then in 2045 (28 years from now) to continue the sequence.
I also feel like they deserve it: they’ve been sending their A-game to Eurovision (they’re the only Big 5 to take it that seriously) and have had pretty good results! They are one of the best Eurovision countries at the moment (along with Sweden and Russia), it should be rewarded.
I agree! It’s about time.
Out of topic, but Iveta Mukuchyan’s just released her new music video and IT’S GIVING ME LIFE!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CO6yallQtEg
Great video, but song is not so impressive as Love wave.
Seven of my top 10 (as of my 2nd evaluation) are in this top 10. The exceptions are Estonia, Portugal and Norway, with Belgium, Azerbaijan and Israel in this top 10. I’ve just started my 3rd and final evaluation, and the more I listen to Blanche’s song, the more likely I think she will knock JOWST out of my top 10, in spite of her video being slightly above “very good” but not “excellent.” …And I do grade the videos, because it gives us a window into what they might present on stage. There are a few exceptions where a… Read more »
Verona now has a very beautiful version in Italian ????
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HS6oNoAruVo
OMG! Thank you so much. I just heard the Italian version. It’s so beautiful! I love it.
Also Modern Talking version
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-S5jXkhhrfE&t=0s
And… a Club Remix version: https://youtu.be/Lncfzvno0q8
That’s a lot of versions! 🙂
Yes, they just released a vinyl with several remixes. Nice!
Sorry guys but I perfer the original by far… although the modern talking version is kind of fun…
The original was already pretty “Modern Talking”.
Amazing: I am italian and didn’t realize how catchy this music is until I listened to this versione! She does know how to sing with hearth!
Indeed! What a huge jump in value!
What great qualitative difference can offer the verse language.
I like so much Verona in italian language.
Portugal ended up being way too low IMO. But I understand, it’s a love it or hate it kind of song.
Fortunately the ESC is not decided on a average from each caller like it is here. I think Portugal will have a lot of votes from the people who love the song and its position will be more in tune with the OGAEs predictions (I believe it sits there on a seventh place).
Actually, maybe next year each wiwijury could give points to their favourite songs using the ESC point system instead (just an idea).
Italy = overrated.
Karl where’s the need to say? You’re such a frustrated hater…
@wiwbloggs and all commentators. Thank you guys. That was a lot of fun! I don´t agree with all of the wiwi ranking, of course. But, hey, we cannot all like the same things. (still not over those 0s and 1s for Portugal heheh). Celebrate diversity, right? Have fun in Kiev and I am looking forward to your reports and interviews on the spot. We will here to comment
And special thank you to Robyn 😉
I wholeheartedly agree and second your comments and gratitude towards Robin and Wiwibloggs team. It’s almost here, so exciting!
I can’t hardly wait… good that the rehearsals are about to start and we all will have more ‘food for thought ‘ enjoy! 😉
Montenegro higher than Poland ?
WTF
It must be that spaceship.
Once the live performances start the cards will change drastically. Blanche has a great video..but the live performance was notging special….let the rehearsals begin!
Romania’s 5.69 is normal! This is a devisive song! There are people loving it and people not like it at all. That’s why it got this score! Poland is also underrated here! Come on! It’s not the 30th around 42 songs! Portugal is underrated for sure! 23th?? I can understand it’s also a divisive song. For some people it’s a masterpiece and for some people it’s just a dated song coming from the 50s! Also, Australia and Armenia are underrated! They will definetely be above 15th! About the top 10: I believe FYROM will not be top 10! I am… Read more »
4th best score in history of Wiwibloggs? I’m so proud of our Blanche <3
Guys do you like Francesco Gabbani’s hands? What do you think about his hands on that photo?
That is genuinely a good question. In my personal opinion his hands look gentle and soft but at the same time they are strong and muscular. I could be wrong but I definitely feel that his hands show a strong sense of Italian descent. I am interested to hear from them though because they might have better opinions about Francesco’s hands
My grandma (Italian, obviously) taught me that big (or prominent or “muscular” as you call them) hands and noses in men are signs of an established inner strength and mental solidity (or self reliance, how you wanna you call it). Or something like that, you know, old school wisdom… Why, do you study or evaluate body language and constitution? Interesting!
Most over-rated? Armenia, Iceland, Azerbaijan and Finland.
Under-rated? Albania, Australia and Bulgaria.
Just my thoughts.
Belgium and FyrMacedonia are the perfect example that songs should not be overproduced. Overproducing creates flops on stage, live. Stop caring about studio version, or about video. Be sure that you have a song that will sound good live.
Is Polegrad Gagarina the contributor previously known as Mario?
Seems as if Sweden comes 6th in many polls :O What if that’s our spot?
Which polls? I’m curious.
No surprise Italy ranked the highest and I am almost certain that we will be seeing Italy win this year. Of the other songs in the top 10, I think Finland are ranked too high and although I think the juries will like it, I can’t see it reaching the final. Israel and Serbia also to high IMO, while I would have Australia, Netherlands and the UK higher.
UK higher? UK will be 42, but because is in big5, will be 26.
UK, and Austria should be swapped with Italy and Azerbaijan to make an almost perfect top 10 in my opinion, Netherlands, San Marino and Malta are way underrated as well and why is Italy so high its only my 30th
Not so relevant to this but there is an Italian version of Verona out and it sounds like Koit and Laura are actually singing it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWx0lGY-0Jk
Polegrad Gagarina is probably wetting themselves at this point xD
Haha! The 80s remix is even more exciting I think: https://youtu.be/-S5jXkhhrfE
🙂
Hi. I made a cover of United Kingdom’s Lucie Jones and I would love to get some feedback, so please listen to it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8UgIZ-Orw8
If you enjoy it you can check my other eurovision covers, I have currently four of this year’s contest, including FRANCE, BELGIUM and SWITZERLAND
Thank you!
Awww. Thank you. You’re cute. 🙂
I think “City Lights” is your best Eurovision cover. Your soft-rock voice and falsetto suit that song well.
FUMING for Malta!
I just want a victory for bulgaria. Krisia deserves revenge.
Blanche <3
thank you wiwi jury .my favorite song and performancebis Italy this year.
I’m really glad my favorite finished 4th. 🙂
As mentioned on another thread, whenever Wiwi does their ranking, someone from their top 10 misses the final. My bet is either Finland (due to the draw in SF1) and Macedonia (live weak vocals).
Also, some songs were ranked too high (looking at Azerbaijan) and some were too low (Portugal, Netherlands).
Rehearsal starts on Sunday and by then there will be changes. So all I can say is good luck to everyone.
Italy is the most overrated ever. Cheap electronic sound (I preferred the San Remo instrumental version), no meaning… just a good looking man and a dancing gorilla.
Portugal is the most underrated.
No meaning? LOL.
No meaning? It is clear you did not even read the meaning of the song! How can you judge if you don’t know? Actually it has the most meaningful lyrics!
LOL
Portugal: Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Namaste!
Macedonia(flop) and Belarus overrated , Australia , Croatia and Romania underrated
perhaps it’s better to be underrated than overrated 🙂
I predict hate and unicorns in this comment section.
Instead, I’m here listening to Magellano on repeat.
bye.
It has been released?!
Yes. #1 on Itunes Italy.
I don’t know about the rest of Europe, but it’s on Spotify as well.
Also Levina’s album, it’s quite good.
Spogliaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarmi
I’m going to buy it in the next days…
Com’è nel suo totale, senza spoilerarmi niente, per favore, in tre aggettivi? 🙂 Grazie.
I already finished my money this month o_o’
Yeeeeeeeessssssss, I’ve got it on repeat too.
It’s such a great album!
Mini-review:
– Magellano (Gabbani): It’s a solid pop/alternative album, very radiofriendly and original. The only song that I’m not very into is “A Moment like this”. It has some Latin/Hispanic roots. There’re only 9 songs though. Score 8.5/10
– Unexpected (Levina): It’s really unexpected. Perfect Life is the worst song by far and it doesn’t match with the tracklist. At some point during tracks #9 or #10 I’ve got a bit bored. But it’s also a solid pop album with some slow-motion vibes. Wildfire is my favourite. Score: 6.0/10
I meant “A moment of silence”
“A moment like this” is “A moment of silence”? I can’t hear Latin/Hispanic roots in that, hahaha, but I’m not really good defining music. 🙂
What I can say about Magellano is that in my opinion there are good songs with brilliant (even genius) lyrics. For me it’s 8.5 only because it has only 9 tracks and I already knew 3 of them. But there are songs that are earworm from the first listening, and it’s absolutely not common with Italian songs.
I haven’t listen to Levina’s album yet. But I’ll do tomorrow I think.
Thanks a lot, Gippa and Joe. Very kind of you!
Poor Levina, very good Singer with a copycat song, pretty unfair odds… It’s a pity for her, then. Hope her the best!
I said in the album in general, not in that song. I think that Magellano is an album that could do well in Latin America.
Ah, ok. Sorry @Joe, I thought you were speaking about the song.
Now it’s almost a 9 for me, I’m discovering things that I didn’t get in the first listenings, and the fact that I already knew songs shouldn’t be a demerit. 🙂
Might be the first time in a long time that the top 3 are Eurovision OGs…
Portugal’s result is kind of a joke. Congratulations to the expert haters/jokers who gave it 1 and 1.5 just to make sure they’d have it their way.
If they don’t like, don’t like. Stop to put Portugal in the top, salvador will stay in semi.
While it’s true that if they don’t like it, they just don’t like it, that doesn’t mean you get to tell us not to put Portugal in our Top lists. Also, you can’t state as a fact that Salvador will stay in the semi final. The voting audience will have the final say on the night of 5/9.
Portugal will stay in the semi? Really?! In the final: there already!! In the top 5 for sure. Why am I even wasting my time with people who can’t appreciate good music. Portugal’s song is too good for this contest.
Once again a poll that shows it will be between Italy and Belgium. Go, go, go Belgium. The gap between Italy and Belgium is pretty small.
Gabbani can sing at least!
Gabbani has charisma and can sing…. blanche has a nice voice but to me it doesn’t fix well on “city lights” and her charisma is the same as a potato!
Wim Belgium won’t win!
Belgium will win. Go, go, go Blanche.
yes, 31 years after winning the 31st festival 😉
Romamia is to high. Always always Itsly. Its not gonna winn anyway. Its a silly childich song
stop typing with your face!!
@Hi, I agree Italy will not win!
Sounds realistic to me.
UK ranked way too low!
It won’t win! Like France 2011
Or it will as Norway 2009, Sweden 2012, Denmark 2015 🙂
Occidenali’s Karma is a massive hit.
France 2011 wasn’t.
Also stage presence and charisma lol
And yet this results were disgraceful. Portugal will follow the success of Italy 2011 and Netherlands 2014 and once again your score will end up being a humillation for a so called jury. It’s inevitable.
Força Salvador! Make Eurovision Great Again!
LOL
Top 5 average ratings since 2012
Sweden 7.81
Australia 7.73
Italy 7.35
Norway 7.26
Azerbaijan 7.10
Edit: Australia should be 7.36.
