He may not have won Eurovision 2017, but Francesco Gabbani‘s rolls on in Italy.

The 34-year-old artist — who won the long-lasting Festival di Sanremo both in 2016 and 2017 — released his new single “Tra le granite e le granate” (Between slushes and grenades) as he prepares for a busy summer, which includes more than thirty live concerts across the Italian peninsula.

Gabbani’s tour kicks off on June 14 in Fermo and will stop in some of the country’s most beloved cities, including Verona, Turin, Milan, Genoa, Florence, Rome, Naples and Palermo.

And it’s not out of the question that Francesco may take his tour abroad.

I’m ready to positively welcome some proposals that have been made to us. There are various invitations — I hope to continue the tour beyond our borders at the end of the Italian leg.

Francesco Gabbani — “Tra le granite e le granate” (Official Video)

Written by the same team behind “Occidentali’s karma” — and consisting of Francesco Gabbani, his brother Filippo Gabbani, Fabio Ilacqua and Luca Chiaravalli — “Tra le granite e le granate” is the second single from the concept album “Magellano”.

It has already topped the Italian FIMI Albums chart in the first week of its release.

As with “Occidentali’s karma”, the new hit includes deep reflection behind catchy music, whistling refrains and light-hearted atmosphere. Francesco explains it like this:

In the song are listed the stereotypes of those who force themselves to have fun, between sunscreens and water games, while outside of the beaches the same old life in black and white goes on. It’s the holiday, the surrogate of a real journey, a short break of slowness and peace, which only functions to make the long winter at least bearable. The contemporary slave stretches out into the sun, sprinkles his white and flabby skin with sunscreen, and wants to forget just for a moment the world outside, with its grey everywhere. It’s our human condition.

FRANCESCO GABBANI – TRA LE GRANITE E LE GRANATE LYRICS

Oggi il paradiso costa la metà
lo dice il venditore di felicità
in fuga dall’inferno, finalmente in viaggio
la tua vacanza in un pacchetto omaggio

Foto di gruppo, sotto il monumento
turisti al campo di concentramento
e sulle spiagge arroventate
lasciate ogni speranza voi ch’entrate… e-state!

Lì dove siete? Com’è che state?
Ci state bene? E-state!

lasciate ogni speranza voi ch’entrate… e-state!

Lì dove siete? Com’è che state?
Ci state bene? E-state!

Lì dove siete? Com’è che state?
Ci state bene? E-state!

Eppure non partiamo mai
ci allontaniamo solo un po’
diamo alla vita un’ora
perché al ritorno sembri nuova

Davvero non andiamo mai
oltre le nostre scuole
muovi il passo, tieni il tempo
gira come gira il vento

Lì dove siete? Com’è che state?
Ci state bene? E-state!

Eppure non partiamo mai
ci allontaniamo solo un po’
diamo alla vita un’ora
perché al ritorno sembri nuova

Davvero non andiamo mai
oltre le nostre suole
muovi il passo, tieni il tempo
gira come gira il vento

Dietro le spalle un morso di felicità
davanti il tuo ritorno alla normalità
lavoro e feste comandate
lasciate ogni speranza voi ch’entrate

Lì dove siete? Com’è che state?
Ci state bene? E-state!

Lì dove siete? Com’è che state?
Ci state bene? E-state!

Does ‘granite’ refer to those ice drinks that they’re chucking around?

yes 🙂 The video also represents the meaning of lyrics. “Nevertheless we never leave We just walk away a little We give life an hour so on the return it will look new We really never go beyond our soles” http://lyricstranslate.com/en/between-granite-and-granade-lyrics.html

I love this song and the album! I hope it goes to number one like Occidentali’s Karma! I’ve become such a huge fan of Francesco’s music now!

According to Wikipedia and Cristian Scarpone (above) the album was already number one in Italy. Well deserved, in my opinion, too. 🙂

To be honest, I prefer “Occidentali’s karma”.
But “Tra le granite e le granate” is really good too!
It’s fun, italian and the kind of music that made Franscesco known to all Europe!

His album is brilliant!!
Different type of songs, different types of Francesco. And it reflects exactly the concept of the title “Maggelano”! He explores different things.

I love his cover of “Suzanna”! “Maggelano is brilliant too! Love it!

“He explores different things.” I listened also his previous albums and this is a constant in his music. His albums are full of surprises, with different moods and rhythms, and he always puts an especial effort in his lyrics, it worth the translations.I discovered some old videos in his previous rock band Trikobalto, and I loved it too.

I’ve listened that Trikobalto ”era” too, great songs and energy! Also ”Greitest iz” and ”Eternamente ora”, every album is wonderful on its own way, such a great artist!
”Spogliarmi” and ”Pachidermi e Papagalli” are my favourites from new album.

I would think that Francesco, of all people, would be philosophical about failing to win Eurovision after being such an overwhelming favourite.

Well, Francesco has a large history of struggle and hard work to be able to do his own music, more than 10 years of being truly unrecognized and underrated for trying to be to be true to himself in music. Many closed doors during his journey. In his recent interviews he said he sees this ESC experience as remarkable positive, beacause the great victory is to be able to share is music and to feel the reaction of the public when he plays live. He sees it as a wonderful opportunity to share his music outside his country, and to… Read more »

I hope that he will release Pachidermi e pappagalli as his 3rd single, that song is even better than Occidentali’s Karma.

Tra le granite e le granate = Between sorbets and grenades

[It’s not actually sorbet, but flavoured crushed ice, I don’t know an English term for that]

Muono, you’ll find a subtitled video here: http://dai.ly/x5o5hej.
There is also some more info on the lyrics on the description below the video, maybe it will help.

For those who don’t understand Italian, you can find a SUBTITLED video of his live performance at the May Day Concert in Rome: http://dai.ly/x5o5hej . On the description it says (quoting): Gabbani’s new album was named after the Portuguese navigator and explorer Ferdinand Magellan, who led the first European voyage of discovery to circumnavigate the globe – the first European ever to cross from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean before reaching the then-called South Sea. The concept of travel and journey is the underlying theme of the whole album, which Gabbani says is the embodiment of those who… Read more »

Little note: “Granate” are not pomegranates but just “granades”, the bombs. 🙂

Yeah, I thought that too when I read it on that video’s description… But then I searched for it and found some Italian-English forum discussions on the lyrics and apparently it was meant to be another kind of pun… Gabbani seems to be a pro on that! (and on messing with our minds too, hahahahaah)

I’m Italian and I don’t think “Granate” could also be intended as “pomegranates” since “pomegranate” in Italian is “melograni”. It’s seems a bit forced to me and it takes away the contrast between paradise/hell, slushes/granades that is the base over which the song is built on. 🙂
Hey, but everything could be, and maybe these people are right, but I can assure you nobody here calls pomegranates as granades.

You’re right, it makes more sense the way you tell it, no doubt about it.
Now’s that time when tons of translations will start to pop up everywhere, with lots of different versions, ahahahahah.

I’m German, but I can assure you, to me it’s also inexplicable how “granate” could mean pomegranates. This is clearly just a false translation (above all the title would be pretty pointless) and, really, there’s no need to think a second longer about it.

Amazing album. In there we get to know the diverse sides of Francesco in music, the ironic reflection themes behind catchy tunes, and deep emotional songs full of soul and beautifull poems. I find the theme of this album very interesting, Magellan ‘is an emblem of those who have the courage to push for the unknown and have the courage to do the most difficult travel inside and get to know themselves deeply. I loved his previous albums too, “Greitist Iz” and “Eternamente Ora”, but is on stage that he truly reveals himself, he is magic and mesmerizing when playing… Read more »

People claimed that Francesco would win ESC. He didnt… His song was average and his performance was underwelming.

People should not give overwelming reviews to average tunes

An “average tune” that won the most renowned music festival in Europe ( imparcial and professional jury ). The most viewed song in ESC history, 4 platinum discs, the most original theme and lyrics, that won the critics prize ( people that really knew the meaning of the song ). The fact that this song doesn´t win only prove that it is too good for a “fast food” music contest, where people vote for the “staging” and the 3 minutes entertainment show, and not for the true content of music. It is so much for this kind of “average” contest,… Read more »

I really like this song. It’s not an immediate classic like Occidentalis Karma, but after a couple of listens I was hooked. I’d love to see him live.

I’m still kinda sad that he didn’t get the win he expected, having cleared his diary for the weeks following the contest, appearing on German TV etc. – his plan didn’t quite come together in the way he had thought, but I hope he managed to have a good experience in Kyiv – onwards and upwards.

I don’t like this song, not very much at least. I guess he wanted to present something different from Occidentali’s Karma.
My favourite from his album is Spogliarmi.
