They’re the euro-dance group who crashed and burned in the Eurovision 2013 final, where they placed 21st out of 26 competing countries.

But for German three-piece Cascada that was just a blip in their ongoing hit parade, which now includes club banger “Playground”.

The track, which came out at the end of April, slipped under our radar as Eurovision madness raged. As we were all looking toward Kyiv, Cascada — and front-woman Natalie Horler — were looking toward Paris and Cologne, which jointly hosted the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships. That’s because their track served as the official anthem of the event. They sing of a “Playground” but Cascada do not play about!

Following the pattern of the group’s back catalogue, the song begins and ends in electro wonder — it pulsates with synths, clangs, bangs and other digi-sounds you’d struggle to name, but which reign in euro-dance territory.

While it never reaches the heights of “Everytime We Touch” or the iconic “Evacuate the Dancefloor”, the tune serves its purpose and falls into the guilty pleasure category — perfect for when you’re cruising through Ibiza with the roof down and the stereo cranked up…or in this case when you’ve got your hockey sticks out and are ready to slay that little black puck.

NEW SINGLE OUT NOW ?????? #playground #newsingle #outnow #officialsong

The strength of “Playground” stems, of course, from the production and not the song’s lyrical content. But lesbihonest, no one listens to Cascada for a philosophy lesson. “Round and round, won’t let my feet touch the ground, oh” — it may be fast-food music, but who doesn’t like a bit of fast food?

Cascada aren’t the only Eurovision act to provide the theme song for the World Hockey Championships.

In 2014, Belarus’ Litesound performed their song “Brothers” as the official anthem of the tournament.

I guess sending big names to Eurovision just because they’re big names usually doesn’t work, like it didn’t for Cascada, Bonnie Tyler, Nicky Byrne, Emma Marrone, Edurne, Anggun, Dutch Trjtjrjrjsd Ootrjrjterj, etc…
