It’s summertime and former Melodifestivalen stars have been giving us plenty of fresh new tunes to listen to. We’ve already heard new releases from Måns Zelmerlöw, Samir & Viktor and plenty from the class of 2017, but now it’s time to see what other Melfest and Swedish JESC stars have been up to.

Eric Saade – “Another Week”

Following his 2016 reinvention with a more sophisticated pop sound, Eric Saade continues with the dreamy “Another Week”. He sings of the feeling of a summer love, when the days and weeks glide by. “Oops, there goes another week of my life, and I’m so glad I spent it with you”. The release comes ahead of Eric’s upcoming appearance on the celebrity music show Så mycket bättre.

Magnus Carlsson – “Sommarnatt”

The former Alcazar member and current schlager king has “Sommarnatt” (Summer night). It’s has a breezy tropical feeling, mixed with Magnus’s dreamy romantic lyrics. Needless to say, it’s the perfect soundtrack for hot summer nights, whether spent in Sweden or away at a tropical location.

Ace Wilder – “Dansa i neon”

Ace Wilder has paid tribute to a Melfest synthpop classic, with her cover of Lena Philipsson’s 1987 song “Dansa i neon” (Dance in the neon). While Ace doesn’t have Lena’s ’80s power perm, she still brings her own style of the song and gives it a contemporary sound while still keeping its synthpop aesthetic.

Isa – “Light On”

She might have missed out on making the Melfest final in 2016, but as Isa sings, “The only way I go is up from here”. “Light On” is an edgy piece of electropop, blending Los Angeles cool with Isa’s Scandi style.

Julia Kedhammar – “Everywhere”

In 2014 she was the final artist to represent Sweden at Junior Eurovision. Now Julia Kedhammar has released new single “Everywhere”. It’s super cute pop song, where Julia reminds her bae, “I will follow you everywhere”. But that’s in a kind, supportive way, not in a weird stalkery way.

NEIKED feat. MIMI – “Call Me”

Following the international success of the song “Sexual”, Swedish production collective NEIKID returns with “Call Me”. This time the guest vocals are by Mimi — aka Mimmi Sandén. She’s the younger sister of Molly Sandén and Sweden’s representative of Junior Eurovision 2009. “Call Me” has a summery vibe, mixed with a cool electropop sound.

Niello ft. Robin Stjernberg – Sista ordet

Robin Stjernberg represented Sweden in 2013, and earlier this year Robin Bengtsson performed his song “I Can’t Go On” in Kyiv. Now Robin S has got back behind the mic providing vocals on “Sista ordet” (The last word). The song is in collaboration with Swedish rapper Niello, but there are plenty of opportunities for Robin to show off his power vocals, particularly on the hearty neo-soul chorus.

Boris René – “Anywhere You Go”

Boris René’s soul charm meets tropical house with a touch of wanderlust thrown in for good measure. We’re particularly loving the middle-eight, with its reggae meets gospel style.

Anton – “L.I.L.Y.”

He’s got married, dropped his surname and has embraced a bold new song. The artist formerly known as Anton Ewald has released new single “L.I.L.Y.” (which seems to stand for “like I love you”). He’s teamed up with legendary pop producer Rami Yacoub and the song has a dark, alternative R&B sound — similar to The Weeknd’s newest stuff.

I like when you guys put polls on these types of posts as then I can see which songs other people like. I usually find that my taste is the same as the general taste on here so it saves me having to listen to all the songs

Love ISA’s new single. She’s a true artist and deserves more recognition. Hope we see her back in Melodifestivalen this year!!!!

Hey, just noticed that Anton’s wife directed the video. Nice song, even if it is a little too reminiscent of Justin Timberlake’s song of the same name (in places).

I love that Ace has covered “Dansa I Neon” – it’s not as good as the original or even Lena’s own 2011 version with Dead By April, but I still love it. How did this classic only come 5th (!) in Melfest 1987…? Also worth noting that Lena eventually won Melodifestivalen on her fourth attempt at age 38, so there’s still hope for Ace. Maybe Lena’s luck will rub off on her. I’m not really feeling the new Eric Saade song, it’s a bit “meh”. His career seems to be stuck in a rut at the moment, hopefully his Så… Read more »
