A lot goes into a Eurovision win — a strong song, a solid performer, effective staging and occasionally political winds that blow voters in a particular direction. But for the superstitious among you, a win may be down partially to fate and signalled by omens, symbols and curious patterns. Whether stemming from hope, silliness or an irrational belief in the weird and wonderful, soothsayers often say they can predict the next Eurovision winner through signs hidden in the past.

Let’s have an example. Greece‘s football team took the Euro 2004 title, winning 1-0 over Portugal. Fast forward one year to the final of Eurovision 2005 and Greece were the winners again. So, with that fresh in everyone’s minds, fans, including wiwiblogger Angus, began to speculate that Portugal, the winners of Euro 2016, would win Eurovision 2017. Most people laughed. Salvador did too…though he laughed straight to victory.

So, in a cheeky nod to fortune telling and the reading of tea leaves, we present you with three scenarios that would once again give life to superstition at Eurovision.

Of course there are plenty of counter examples to the below. This isn’t a forecast, merely a fun look at what could be. Don’t take it too seriously…

The comeback winner

Lately rumours have swirled that the EBU has been in talks with Bosnia and Herzegovina to return to Eurovision following their absence in 2017. Their broadcaster faces a myriad of problems and hurdles — financial, organisational and political — so a Eurovision return is highly unlikely. But if they did manage to stage a comeback, they have the potential to create a special kind of three-peat.

As you’ll remember, Ukraine took a one-year break because of financial problems in 2015. They won the contest upon their return. In 2016 Portugal sat out of the contest so that it could re-group and figure out how to avoid another elimination. They returned in 2017 and won it all. Could the same thing happen to Bosnia and Herzegovina if they return to Lisbon?

Naturally the same could be said for Russia, which also withdrew in 2017. But we’re saving Russia for the next point…

Second time lucky?

Yes, Russia could definitely have returners’ luck on its side. But there is another facet to their potential win. In 2018 Russia will celebrate the ten-year anniversary of its only Eurovision win — secured by pop star Dima Bilan in 2008. Dima had competed at Eurovision just two years earlier, in 2006, placing second.

Anticipation is building about Russia’s return in 2018. Following the ban of their 2017 contestant, they’ll no doubt want to come back with a bang. And they may do that with Sergey Lazarev who competed at Eurovision just two years earlier, placing third.

Sergey fuelled speculation recently when he told wiwibloggs that he hasn’t yet decided whether he’ll compete again in 2018. That suggests he’s at least thought about it. Could Sergey — like his friend Dima — return two years after his debut at Eurovision and win it all?

Third-place springboards

The last country following a striking pattern is Sweden. Back in 2011 Eric Saade came third at Eurovision and one year later Loreen won. Two years later Sanna Nielsen came third at Eurovision and one year later Mans Zelmerlow won.

Most recently — at the 2017 contest in Kyiv — Robin Bengtsson came fifth. But if we revert to the old voting system used for Eric and Sanna, then Robin actually came third. History suggests Sweden’s next win should take place at Eurovision 2018 in Lisbon.

So what do you think? Which scenario do you think is most likely to actually happen? Are there any other striking patterns Eurovision fans should look out for?

Eurovision has mafia with own scenario writers and scenario must be written already. Once upon of time Italy had to win and Sweden was forced by jurors, in 2014 Armenia simply had the best song but Eurovision mafia orgnized scandals because of Aram’s jocks which exhausted Aram and crowned Conchita with her bland James Bond track who won ESC as victim of discrimination and a signal to Russia, then Russia sent winning act and once again ESC mafia made Ukraine win with poitical song. I’m hoping for Hungary to win preferably with something like Origo My second choice would be Albania with a big pop hit like 2009/10 or keep their big vocal songs but sing it Albanian because while I understand it better and I still like it, it seems to lose something in translation so they don’t quite fully click for me Of the countries that have done well recently or are part of the superstitions I’d personally want Belgium or Bosnia. One of the countries that scored really well in recent years but didn’t win yet:
• France (left handside for 2 years in a row)
• Bulgaria (top 5 for 2 years in a row)
• Belgium (top 10 for 3 years in a row)
• Netherlands (4x left handside in the past 5 years AND second in 2014)

I’m even more hoping for a Swedish NQ XD

On the other side, Sweden so deserved to win in 2012 because it was the song, performance and everything.

Brazil will be the country invited by EBU at the request of Portugal. And if this country presents a composition made by one of its classical monsters, and chooses a charismatic singer, we will watch a Brazilian victory. And, of course, we will see Lisboa2019 with Brazilian financial support.

If Brazil is even invited, and judging by the careful way that RTP is preparing its own 2018 festival, as soon as the bets open, I will try to bet a lot of money in these two countries: Portugal and Brazil.

I have a different theory. Using the same superstition that when Ukraine hosts the contest the country that won the UEFA European Championship (Euro) that year also wins the contest . In 2006 when Greece hosted the next year the winner was Finland- a Scandinavian country that, despite the success of their neighbors, and competing in the contest for decades, had never won. If you want to follow the trend from years ago based on superstition that means that Iceland, the last Scandinavian country to never win will win the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest. Get ready for Reykjavik 2019 y’all!

Serbia won on May 12 in a country that won finally after decades of failing, Finland, next year Eurovision is again in a country that failed to score a victory for decades and again on May 12, so there’s another pattern ?

I think Bulgaria was just lucky. Their broadcaster doesn’t care that much, they don’t even cover most of the participation expenses. They got strong entries submitted to them by chance, that’s it.

sorin

I agree with most of your comments, but in this case I disagree. Every country cares, EVERY COUNTRY. To say that Bulgaria was lucky, it means that Germany was unlucky. It’s not about luck. Germany had more than 2000 submissions, FYRMacedonia had more than 100 submissions, and Bulgaria…I don’t know. They had to choose, and is so easy to make the wrong choice. How that Germany could not choose a better song out of so many applications?

I disagree so much. Bulgaria is probably one of the countries that cares the most. They’re very active on their Twitter and are always keeping the public informed about their songs/artists, so they’re very transparent about everything happening. They put a lot of money into getting high-quality acts with strong imported songs and good staging. After taking a break I think they finally understood how to succeed in Eurovision, and that’s why they’re doing well now. I’m excited to see what they’ll come up with this year and they’ve expressed how they very much so want to win.

Polegend Godgarina

Then why doesn’t BNT pay a relevant portion of the participation expenses? One of the shortlisted acts for this year was rejected because she didn’t have the coins to finance her own participation. I ain’t making this up, I have an insider spilling the tea for me.

As far as I know it’s unlikely Bosnia & Herzegovina participates next year, due to financial issues. Personally, I hope to see them in Portugal! Russia follows several patterns. First, they were out in 2017, so they could win in 2018, as it happened 2 years in a row. Secondly, if Sergei sings for Russia again, he will do what Dima Bilan did and won with the 2nd attempt. As for Sweden, it’s the most successful country since 2010. Top 5 places, 2 wins (in 2012 and 2015). It’s possible for them to win again. However, I want them to take… Read more »

You can tell if a song will click with the public.
Albania and Georgia had generic three-minute-long screamfests about peace. Belarus had a cute folk song, but nothing that oustanding. Switzerland had a pop ballad, the UK and Finland’s songs were slow ballads without too much originality, and Germany had a trash song.
Meanwhile: Portugal had a ballad like no one other, Italy had the super catchy and infectious song, and Bulgaria was going to get all the tweens’ votes. Everyone saw it through and these three songs did great as predicted.

Belgium is on a uphill and will win within the next three years. It’s either Sweden or Belgium in Lisbon 🙂

Anything could happen when it comes to Eurovision. This time last year, we all thought there was no way that Portugal would win! So who knows what’s going to happen. 😀

If we are going for a winner who returns to Eurovision, why not Slovakia?

That’d be lovely — great to see any returning country experience success. But our point above is for countries that return after a one-year break (Ukraine and Portugal).

Come on Sweden was NOT good this year
Like hopefully, who thought that Hungary’s “Origo” would be more (tele)voted than “I can’t go on” ????
Besides he mostly got his votes just because he was good looking; let’s be honest

Now when it comes to 2018 I really hope that both Eurovision Asia’s and Eurovision’s entries/songs to be as much awesome as possible, especially the winner.

Yeah, Russia and Sweden would be on my predict list but I would also add Australia to that too…they will win soon, a victory next year will ensure they participate until atleast 2019, it gives the Asian Eurovision a chance to grow and develop and if the Asian Eurovision fails, Australia would still be able to compete in 2019 in the European Eurovision.
Australia will win next year. Watch this space. Hope I’m wrong though.

Personally I’d love an underdog country like Ireland, Spain, Switzerland etc or a consistently good country Like Belgium, Netherlands, Hungary, Bulgaria to win.

Poor Yulia. I hope she will be invited at events related with Eurovision, even if she will never participate. She went to Crimea to show support for her country Russia, and this is how her country sees her : a pawn that now is not useful anymore.

Not even sure if Bosnia will return, which seems quite unlikely, however Russia could really do it. And most highly with Sergey. If he gets a strong entry such as You are the only one, I could imagine him winning, since a lot of people were mad that he did not win instead of Jamala.

There was nothing strong about the song You Are the Loser to Jamala. The performance and the 90 automatic televote points Russia gets every year did that.

Lol, You are the only one was a nothing next to masterpiece 1944. However, that doesn’t mean that it wasn’t a strong one as well. It was a pretentious entry, which was peformed well, although it was a huge copy of Zelmerlöw’s performance, but that’s what the audience likes nowadays..
What I’m trying to say is that Sergey could do it in 2018, since his fans were highly disappointed that he didn’t win, and thus vote for him extra because of that next year.
