As national final season gets going, the next country to confirm the acts competing in its national final is Hungary. The lineup for A Dal 2018 doesn’t feature a lot of familiar faces, but most noticeably The Voice USA star Viktor Kiraly is back.

Hungarian broadcaster MTVA announced the 30 competing acts today. Starting mid-January, the acts will compete in three semi-finals, two finals and one grand final. After all that, Hungary will have its act for Lisbon.

Hungarian-American singer Viktor Kiraly made his A Dal debut in 2012 when he performed with twin brother Benjamin and their sister Linda. Their song “Untried” placed fourth overall. Viktor returned solo in 2014 with the song “Running out of Time”. It reached the superfinal section of the grand final.

In 2015 he returned to the country of his birth and competed in The Voice. Coached by Gwen Stefani, he made it to the live playoffs before being eliminated. He returned to A Dal 2016 as an interval performer, and earlier this year he was part of Hungary’s jury for Eurovision 2017.

Also returning to A Dal 2018 is the rock band Leander Kills. Last year they made it to the grand final with their song  “Élet”. They’ll be joined by the Peet Project, who only made it to the semi-final with “Kill Your Monster”.

Reni Tolvai — who won the fifth season of talent show Megasztár — will also be back. She made her A Dal debut in 2016, where her song “Fire” made it as far as the semi-finals.

While the show has many acts that are new to A Dal, they are not without experience. The entry criteria requires that artists have previous experience either with a recording contract or on television.

1, Gabi Knoll – Nobody to die for
2, #yeahla ft. Viki Eszes – 1 szó mint 100
3, Ceasefire X – Satellites
4, Tamás Horváth – Meggyfa
5, Roland Gulyás – Hypnotized

Fourtissimo is amazing!!! Eurovision needs a not trashy (but at the same time amazing) electric swing song

The Matter withdrew from the competition due to personal reasons. Patikadomb with “Jó szelet!” has been given a place in the competition instead.

Levegot is my favorite so far but it’s sort of a weak contender and shortening it to 3 minutes would ruin it

My hope falls on AWS. If a rock song is going to represent Hungary, it should be the most intense one of the lot.

Not listened to the snippets yet but I’m hoping one of them has a similar vibe to Origo but with no rap this time since that’s what killed Origo’s chances. Excited to see Leander Kills here again, we need more rock/metal representation at Eurovision and I loved Elet, it was in my top 3 for Hungary last A Dal It’s great to see a lot of songs in Hungarian because it always seems to sound so good in songs and I hope we see other countries represent with their language (really holding out for a Romanian song because it’s such… Read more »

I listened to the 30-second snippets of the songs(it’s more the beginnings of the songs, but anyway): and this is my opinion; I love 3 artists songs: Noémo, the best song in my opinion, nice, relaxing voice, a bit alternative. Than I also love Gabi Knoll: seems to be a promising song, a bit pop and a bit alternative as well. The last song that I love comes from YesYes, quite rocky, and also a bit of pop, it seems really good produced. And I also like songs from Viktor Kiraly, a nice sweet song, Reni Tolvai, seems promising and… Read more »

I’m not that impressed by the line-up it’s kinda weak and there are lots of names I’ve never heard before although I’m Hungarian. I’m most excited for Reni Tolvai but I don’t think she has a chance of winning the competition since the jury consists of mainly older people and they’re not open for her style maybe. I’m also curious what Gabi knoll is going to bring, her previous song was good in the show but if I’m not mistaken she failed live so… I think Viktor Király has this in the bag but I’m hoping for a female winner.… Read more »

It happens all the time, at least with my rather small knowledge about my country’s music. A line-up of A Dal usually – even if it couldn’t possibly occur by the rules – contains 10-12 artists with relatively no past in the industry. Returning ones don’t make it easier as well, forming and renaming bands all the time, some familiar performers might try to hide from us: • Yesyes has Ádám Szabó in it. (Give Me Your Love 2015 & Together 2017) • Benjámin Pál (Father’s Eyes 2017) is in Living Room. • The Matter is basically the same as… Read more »

That A dal jury is one of the most tragic and incorrect things about the Eurovision, ever.

I also don’t understand why they have more than 80% power (more because we have a stupid app to give points from 1 to 10 instead a simple Like/Dislike system). We basically just have 5 and a half shows to see how they decide the top 4 by their own preferences (Károly F. said in an interview he cares more about what he likes than what would do well on Eurovision… He also stated we don’t stand a chance because Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan [and a very long list of distant countries] always vote for each other x.x) (((Although Miklós B.… Read more »

I’m really looking forward for Gabi Knoll (She competed in A Dal 2014 with the song ‘Sweet Memories’, and i loved it) Roland Gulyás (He was on the Hungarian X-Factor this year) Viktor Király, Reni Tolvai, and Gábor Heincz. 🙂

I’m really excited for our selection

I love Reni Tolvai, she has such global appeal but she’s underrated in the male-dominated Hungarian music industry.

I’m not very impressed by the songs that are already out.
Fourtissimo – “Kisnyuszi a kalapban” has this cool 20’s vibe, but I don’t see it doing very well at ESC.

Noémo – “Levegot” is cute, but not strong enough. She has talent though.

It worked this past May (8th for Joci with “Origo”) and in 2013 (10th for ByeAlex’s “Kedvesem”); and with the right song, it’ll work again. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
