It’s New Year’s Eve (or New Year’s Day for our friends down under), which means we’re all in the midst of popping corks and renditions of “Auld Lang Syne”. But it’s also time for ESC Radio and Songfestival.be to reveal this years ESC 250.

The poll, where Eurovision fans pick their favourite 250 entries from the contest’s history, is entering its 10th year.

And there’s one question on everyone’s mind — will anyone be able to knock Loreen’s “Euphoria” off the no.1 spot? It’s a position she’s held for five years.

We’ll be updating this post throughout the day as the results get revealed, so be sure to keep checking back as the countdown reaches its climax. You can also follow the countdown live by tuning into ESC Radio, who are playing each of the 250 songs in reverse order.

Last year’s top five also included Il Volo (“Grande Amore”), Sergey Lazarev (“You are the only one”), Jamala (“1944”) and Sertab Erener (“Everyway That I Can”). Will any of these be able to rise up and take the crown? Or do you think any of the new songs from Eurovision 2017 — like Spotify hits “City Lights” or “Hey Mamma” — will end up at no.1? Be sure to leave all your thoughts in the comments section as the countdown continues!

Jamala and Salvador are two of the worst winners of all time. Jamala’s song was painful on the ears, and Salvador sends you to sleep!

We had an amazing run of winners from 2012-2015 (Emmelie de Forest particularly), and those two ruined it a bit. Hoping we get a good winner again this year!

Feel this is as good a space as any to say so: my flight from Florida to New York today took off from – I kid you not – Terminal 3. Yes, I was humming Linda Martin the whole time.

“I treni di Tozeur” by the Italians Alice & Franco Battiato is from 1984 not 1994

Melhor canção de sempre “Amar pelos dois” de Salvador Sobral. Verdadeiramente única.

Funny how Eimear Quinn’s “The Voice” is significantly higher than Gina G’s “Just A Little Bit”.

I thought that Eurovision folklore had told us that “the fans” had fumed in 1996 when such an old-fashioned Irish traditional song had beaten the modern pop glamor of the UK, resulting in some of the massive changes to the contest shortly thereafter.

Coming out of nowhere?

Kojo, Finnish nul-pointer from 1982, making his debut at #85. There had to be a mass action behind this. I like the song, though. I’m disappointed “Quien maneja mi barca?” and “Opera” from 1983 didn’t make similar surprises. It’s always next year… 🙂

Belgium 1983 one of best song from Belgium for me, was so modern for that time in Eurovision and for juries. Like Luxembourg 1977 (with very provacative lyricks for that period)

Great winner. Clearly the best so far. Amar pelos dois overrated, as always.

Apparently songs by Phillip Kirkorov have a drop in rankings.

UPDATE: Euphoria (finally) was beaten by “Geringonça”.

Next year, I’m betting Loreen will finally be bumped down as the true hidden greatness of “Cry Baby” raises it up to the top.

I’m assuming it’s a recent Year bias but Lucie Jones, as fantastic as she was is #67, which seems very high, being objective as you can be. But also personally it seems kind of odd that Gina G and Molly would be so much lower and Jade Ewen wouldn’t place at all.

Oh, agree. Didn’t notice Jade. I love her voice and song by Andrew Lord Webber.

The big shock for me is nothing for either of Cliff Richard’s songs. Always struck me as fan favorites.

Unless there is an unbelievably amazing song next year Loreen will remain on top, and I think Salvador won’t be that high next year either.

“I Can’t Go On” 98th and “You’re the Only One” 11th are big surprises. I also expected “Beautiful Mess” and “Sound of Silence” to be higher.
I am not complaining though.

and… Happy New Year!

Wasnt MAK 2000 considered one iconically bad performance? LOL

So it would be Salvador vs. Loreen it seems

OK, not the place I was hoping Love Shine a Light would finish, but hey, at least it improved on last year by a little (and in the top 50). Has Dinle showed up yet? I’ll bet that’s the highest-placing song from ’97.

Seeing Believe brushing the top 100 just reminds me what a terrible year 2008 was for Eurovision and how the appeal of that song in particular has always escaped me. Anyone wanna explain why that was the winner? I’m genuinely curious, and if other folks enjoy it (evidently they do, or it a) wouldn’t be here and b) wouldn’t have won) I have absolutely nothing against them. Just wanna know why.

Also, just noticed O meu corocao nao tem cor made the cut – very pleased to see people haven’t forgotten Portugal’s second-best result.

I don’t particularly like it, but I think it’s better than Secret Combination and it had a better live performance than Qele Qele, Shady Lady was a better song and had a better live performance. I like the violin and it has a good message (albeit cliche). That alone makes it better than Running Scared, which was one of the worst winners ever.

Joe

It was definitely a strongly-staged performance, just felt overly busy to me and very try-hard (a problem I’ve seen with more than a few Russian entries, usually Dima Bilan’s). Secret Combination and Qele Qele struck me as decent songs that wouldn’t do nearly as well in any other year, but the 2008 selection was very iffy, even in the finals. Shady Lady would’ve made a much better winner for the same reasons you said. I also don’t understand why Portugal, Israel, and the UK didn’t do better – I thought they all had very good songs, although still not up… Read more »

I really liked “Running scared” and even voted for it a few times. The staging was beautiful and the song was nice IMO. I don’t understand why some people thinks that it was bad. lol

Well, to me, and I have nothing at all to base this on…I would not be surprised if Russia cheated. There is no doubt in my mind at all that Azerbeijan outright stole their victory in 2011, and I’ve since began to wonder about the 2008 result too. Like you, the appeal of the song entirely escapes me…maybe it was down to the charismatic performer, and the appealing staging on the night, but there is no denying that the song is incredibly dull. Having seen all of Russia’s other scandalous behavior at such international events like the Olympics (they are… Read more »

Helps that Russia has a MASSIVE voting bloc that’s willing to back them up no matter what they send (maybe Terry Wogan was on to something?). No doubt they’ve sent some strong entries in the past (while I had other favorites, I did think A Million Voices was a strong enough effort and didn’t deserve the hate it got in the hall), and some profoundly overrated ones (like Believe), but I can’t help but notice how much more interesting the voting is when the song is prioritized over the geographical location, such as with Portugal’s victory this year. They only… Read more »

Treni di Tozeur is from ’84, not ’94. Also hoping for some British songs in the top 100 – surprised by how few there are so far (hopefully this means a top 100 finish for Love Shine a Light!).

Also, first comment on Wiwibloggs, so I might as well say: thanks for all your hard work! I check you guys out every day and appreciate your in-depth coverage! Giving Eurovision the respect it deserves. Also love the commenters here – a very smart bunch indeed.

“Vrede” deserves to be so much higher than 220. Likewise for “Hemel en aarde” at 158.

“Non ho l’età” at 138?

I suppose if I will only drive myself crazy if I take this list too seriously, there are so many injustices. 🙂

Anyway, here’s hoping my all time favorite “Vuelve Conmigo” rates highly. If Euphoria is knocked off the top, I guess City Lights is a worthy replacement. Francesco is near the top too, I would hope.

Alas, “Vuelve Conmigo” falls at 102, down 64 places from last year. An outrage!

I think some of the big threats to Loreen’s #1 status could come from some of the 2017 entries – Portugal has got a big shot as does Moldova. I’m not a fan of Bulgaria’s or Belgium’s songs, but they’ve got a lot of support too (mostly from the younger crowd) and could be legitimate contenders as well
