in my head supernova 2018 1

Our Wiwi Jury continues to enjoy the sights and sounds of Latvia, as our Supernova 2018 reviews continue. After taking in the Freedom Monument in Riga, our team of music un-professionals sat down to discuss In My Head, with “Sunset“.

The trio formed in 2015, and are made up of Evija, Armands and Rugo. Each member has their own roles, with Evija taking vocals, Armands instrumentation and Rugo production. That’s some team harmony, y’all!

In My Head — “Sunset”

“Sunset” Reviews

Edgars: “In My Head”…not so much. The song never stays around longer than a moment or two once it’s finished. The song’s perfect for a late night beach party in July — but that’s why it wouldn’t many a powerful impact at Eurovision.

Score: 5/10

Robyn: At its core, “Sunset” is a disco song, but cleverly disguised under layers of slick modern production. It’s a little bit overwhelmingly noisy at times, but “Sunset” comes with a generally cool and breezy feeling. In a curious way, this is a slicker, poppier version of “Line”.

Score: 7/10

Kristin: This is just a slower version of “Line” and a pretty decent one as well. It’s unlikely to leave any major impression — but then again, I wasn’t so sure Aminata would do well in Vienna… “Sunset” has a nice flow, is smooth and calculated in every sense and the vocals are very good. Just not a winner.

Score: 6/10

in my head supernova 2018 2Antranig: I appreciate what In My Head are trying to do here. “Sunset” definitely has a different sort of sound that could make an impression at Eurovision, but it could also fall flat on its face like “Line” did last year. It definitely builds nicely, but while the song sounds like it is at home in Supernova, it would sound out of place at Eurovision. Creative entry but not one that will go very far.

Score: 6/10

Lukas: This is an interesting one. The start of “Sunset” is very promising and quite good, but after a minute you start to get bored. It’s repetitive, but it doesn’t help you remember the song. The whole thing is alright, but very one dimensional and flat. It could work as a background track, but for Eurovision it just doesn’t seem like it works that well.

Score: 6.5/10

William: In My Head’s lead singer sounds like she’s robbed a liquor store and then smoked an entire carton of ciggies — this has a louche, disoriented and ultimately quite loud sound that just doesn’t work for me. Less is more and with this there is just too much…clanging, banging, electro everything. They’ve got undeniable talent, but I’m not sure this is the best showcase of it.

Score: 5/10

Chris: There’s a whole lot of genres on offer in “Sunset”, yet they come together remarkably well. The electro vocal mixed with a hint of Chic-styled guitar blends and makes this pop. Perhaps it’s more Spotify playlist mix than Eurovision though. A potentially tricky one for staging, too.

Score: 7/10

Nice intro and definitely a radio friendly song. However, it’s not my cup of tea and I can’t see this in Eurovision.

I don’t think this genre suits Eurovision and especially not when it’s slowed down.

Yeah, it had decent potential, but they should have taken more riscs with this one. It should explode more and be more brave. Like this it’s just happening and not going anywhere, but it still gets 6.5/10

This one’s underrated, because it sounds like a radio hit. The whole three minutes is one feeling that builds and builds towards the last second. Personally, I like this one better than “Line” from last year (for which I gave 4). Unfortunately, the song is a little bit too hypnotic and forgettable for Eurovision. Very good musical effort though, and this deserves points. 7/10

Didn’t pick the Line similarity until y’all mentioned it. Maybe it’s because I was mourning My Radiant You’s second place to commit it to memory. That being said, I like this song a fair bit more than I liked Line.

Exactly… Triana Park winning the Supernova instead of My Radiant You – that was the biggest crime of all in the national final season. MRY had a classy look (not trashy like Triana Park) and their song was uplifting, very Western European style. Whatever place they would have got, it MOST DEFINITELY would not have been LAST PLACE in the semi!!!

Hopefully Latvians have learned the difference between classy and trashy, good vocals and bad vocals, and won’t make another grave mistake this year.

This sounds like a lot of the entries from the Georgian selection last year, where pretty much, they let anybody with any musical experience, throw an entry in. I would be surprised if there was much of a “performance” during Supernova as it does sound like a song that was just put together on a computer. Background music at best.
