The Czech Republic has surprised us with a national final, so the Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — have journeyed to Prague to check out the acts competing in Eurovision Song CZ. First up is Got Talent star Eva Burešová with “Fly”. Did it make us want to take flight? Read on to find out!

Eva Burešová – “Fly”

“Fly” reviews

Deban: “Fly” is an emotional pop-ballad orchestrated with arresting clap-beats and modern instrumentation. It takes flight with a sound that crosses over. Eurovision fans will celebrate the fact that this was written by an ESC veteran. However, the strength here is that it is fabulously delivered by one of Czechia’s most controversial emerging stars.

Score: 7.5/10

Kristin: Jeez, never has one song managed to pack so much depression into three minutes. No wonder Eva wants to fly away. It has all the best intentions to be a big rollercoaster of strong emotions, but instead it just becomes monotonous white noise after about 90 seconds. Which is such a shame because Eva is one hell of a performer. If only she had a better and stronger song.

Score: 4.5/10

Mikhail: It is powerful, no doubt. I love the arrangement — it is so diverse. Eva has a remarkable voice and I absolutely adore the moment right at the beginning of the chorus, where she is mixing it up with falsetto. But there is something that pulls me away and it is lyrics. I don’t care about lyrics so much usually, but sometimes it bugs me. There is too much “fly”, which is so overused. The other lyrics are also somewhat basic and do not add much to the song.

Score: 7/10

Antranig: The first two seconds present a very memorable beat and I was expecting this to go into Margaret Berger territory of dark contemporary pop. However, the lyrics here are just extremely basic and at times cringeworthy. A terrific vocalist with flawless instrumentation, but when you put it all together as one product, it’s not a very strong package.

Score: 6.5/10

Josh: Whilst “Fly” is emotive and powerful, it’s also quite generic. I can appreciate the quality in the production and Eva’s voice complements the instrumental beautifully. It just lacks the dynamism and the wow-factor I need to really get behind an entry. A good effort from Czech Republic but at the end of the day, it’s a middle of the pack kind of song.

Score: 6/10

Robyn: “Fly” has created a moody soundscape, with a combination of both electronic and traditional instruments. In combination with Eva’s vocals, it creates an ethereal feeling. But as a song, “Fly” isn’t strong enough. The chorus doesn’t have enough oomph and it just ends up feeling like background music, rather than a song in its own right.

Score: 6/10

The lyrics may be a little weak, but I love the dark atmosphere. My favourite.

Love the intro, it creates mystery. Beautiful voice. Strong chorus. It needs a good staging though to be elevated.

Technical problems posting review. Annoying.
This one is my favourite of the Czech selection.

Um… for a song that tries to go the deep dark way, the lyrics are somewhat weak, they don’t really drive to the point. This would lend itself to interesting staging, but for a song like this to work, it needs to be deep and clever from all standpoints, especially the lyrics. This one doesn’t do it for me, and well, Czechia already had two serious ladies with deep songs in a row. Time to shake it up?

I like this type of dark songs (I loved “Warrior” by Nina Sublatti back then). This one will depend a lot on the stage performance. If done well, the Czech Rep. could qualify and even place in the top 15. All is working here for me, it isn’t a masterpiece but it stands out and would probably do it in May. The ethnic instrumentation adds some “East” flavour to it.

7.5/10

If I was Czech, I would go for “Fly”, instead of “Lie to Me”, which I personally found very noisy and annoying.

Riddle me this? Why you guys put Jana Bürçeska on the pic for the article?

It sounds a bit like Katy Perry’s Rise. I’ll say this for the Czechs- their entries always improve on the stage. And if this won, I’d say it’s a better effort than Gabriela or Martina (then again I loved their 2015 song so it figures that I would like this).

Mikolas is the artist most likely to win his national final out of anyone competing this ESC season though.

I don’t really hear Rise in here apart from the production maybe? But this makes me think, Rise would’ve made a PERFECT Eurovision entry… not as much as Katy’s own Bigger Than Me though, both serving top 4 Belgian entry teas.

If this gets chosen then I hope they’ll change the cringeworthy lyrics – heck, translate them into Czech. But then again I hope this wont get chosen – it’s not terrible, but it’s not great either.

Execution here is no joke. The song itself isn’t mine, but I still could see it in main Contest final owing to sound quality and vocal Eva serves here. Half like reminded of Nargiz. My divisive 6.5/10 (9 vs 4).

What a beautiful song! It’s interesting, atmospheric and has great lyrics. It leaves it’s impact slowly and progressively, which might be an issue on ESC, unless a really strong visuals are featured on stage.

Nonetheless, 9/10 from me!

Solid song in this selection and would be pretty much what I would have expected if the Czech Republic had went with internal selection again. Thankfully, they did not and we might get something a little more interesting.

This is not my style of music at all!! There is no consistent melody and it seems like she is singing with a cracked vocal cord when she sings the word ‘Fly’

A 2.5/10

Yeah, it’s a 6.5/10, but it’s the best song in this tragic selection. Interesting production and nice build-up with no cringe and without trying hard.

Sis it doesn’t take any pretentiousness not to like a 2014 Jason Derülo reject with cringeworthy lyrics like “you should’ve thought about me before you phucced her at the club”, but you do you.

Uhm…. I love Mikolas’ and Eva’s songs… Does that make me half good tasted? You can’t just take your own opinion on songs as a standard to what we should consider ”good taste”. I feel like you think you and your opinions are more important than they actually are. I often don’t like songs, that are liked by the main audience, but that doesn’t make my taste worse or better than anyone elses. My opinion doesn’t have another quality, it’s just different from the rest.

Sis you don’t need to take things so seriously. I know that you’re 13 or something, but when people speak like twitter stans they’re mostly just kidding. Lordamercy!

I’m 13 or something? I’d know about this lol. And I’m not taking things ”so seriously”, I just expressed my opinion. And when people like you write stupid comments like this, I’m not gonna let this be excused by you saying you’re kidding. Like, I don’t even care if you’re kidding, your comments are rubbish. End of discussion ”Sis”
