kris oz supernova 2018 1

All aboard the “Morning Flight”? Well whether this one is heading to Lisbon is yet to be seen. The Wiwi Jury, our in house team of music un-professionals, is at the halfway point of the songs of Latvia’s Supernova 2018.

This time, they’re looking at “Morning Flight” by Kris & Oz. The duo formed in Riga in 2013, putting out their first mini-album “Image of You” in 2016. The song was, perhaps unsurprisingly, inspired by an early morning flight. Is this one ready for take off? Read our thoughts below:

Kris & Oz — “Morning Flight”

“Morning Flight” Reviews

Edgars: It’s hard to understand, sometimes, why people keep on sending such boring songs to national selections. Sorry, but there’s nobody on the list for a flight from Riga to Lisbon. However, there’s at least a story to appreciate in the lyrics.

Score: 4/10

Robyn: Here’s a song that seems to be a cautionary tale of the importance of not mixing hallucinogenic drugs with domestic air travel. The lyrics are wonderful, including the observation that “People looks like emphatic shrimps”. This is either the worst song in Supernova or the best. Either way, it’s a wild ride.

Score: 5/10

William: The best part of this lyric video is the use of the unicorn emoji. Sadly, not even they can bring enough magic to this number to make it downloadable. She speaks of cotton candy and cloudy bandits, and chants bam, body and boo…but fails to deliver a memorable hook or chorus. It’s experimental for sure. But sometimes experiments go terribly wrong.

Score: 3/10

kris oz supernova 2018 2Natalie: I was wondering when someone was going to try to send a song about turbulence to Eurovision. It’s just sad that this one doesn’t really go anywhere. No matter how catchy “Fasten seatbelts shaking shaking” is, this still feels a bit of a letdown. It doesn’t have any excitement or emotion to it. It’s unique at least, and has a bit of polish and gentleness. Extra points for cute unicorn references.

Score: 5.5/10

Bernardo: For the entire three minutes, I was trying my best to understand the story and meaning behind this composition. It was not a success. Like most songs in Supernova, “Morning Flight” doesn’t fit into a category. It’s quirky, yet very loungy. Too much for my taste.

Score: 4/10

Chris: Latvia has come up with some questionable national final entries before. “Morning Flight” may take the crown now though. Whether it’s the fault of the production for masking the vocals too much, or they’re just plain not good enough, it’s hard to tell. But whatever Kris & Oz are going for here, it’s certainly not working.

Score: 2.5/10

Lukas: This song is very monotonous and quite boring. The jazzy vibes are nice, but it doesn’t make this song that special. The whole song just goes by and doesn‘t catch your attention at all. If you asked me to sing something from this song, I don’t think I could remember anything to be honest. From all the songs, it just doesn‘t stand out in any way.

Score: 5/10

WIWI JURY VERDICT: 4.46/10

Unfortunately for Kris & Oz, it seems our jury aren’t getting on board this flight. What do you think, though? Are you jumping on this plane? Let us know all your thoughts in the comments section below.

Thank you to whoever wrote those lyrics, though. Truly original. I laughed a lot. 😀
The music is nice, but flat. 5/10.

It might be different from the rest, bust it’s boring and bland. The singer really annoys me… I can’t with that voice. It’s 4/10 for me.

It’s very creative and for that it gets a plus. But while it creates onomatopeia succesfully, it gets monotone pretty fast and misses the final punchline.

5/10

No surprise but this is my favourite song from Latvia this year. Not expecting many people to like it but that is kind of the point. There is no mass appeal to this, you either get it or you don’t and out-of-the-box thinking should be encouraged in national finals.

It shocks me to no extent that they chose to keep boring English songs over haunting Latvian ones. This is what stems dislike for this song in my opinion.
A 3/10
