katrine lukins supernova 2018 1

The Wiwi Jury might not have found the Riga Beaver yet, but they’re certainly finding plenty of Supernova 2018 songs. Latvia’s selection starts in a little over a week, and our team of music un-professionals are reviewing every act.

Katrine Lukins returns after entering Supernova last year with “Silhouette”. She’ll be hoping to make it further than the semi finals with her 2018 entry, “Running Red Lights”.

Katrine Lukins — “Running Red Lights”

“Running Red Lights” Reviews

Robyn: This is a decent modern pop single, and it has the potential to really explode in its live performance. The trouble is, on its own, it is a bit generic, a patchwork of pop trends from the past few years. Katrine will have to work hard to bring herself to the performance.

Score: 7/10

Chris: “Running Red Lights” is a good song that could be great — if it wasn’t a Eurovision song. Katrine clearly has a lot to say, and it feels like the song rushes through it all to fit within three minutes. The pre-chorus ambles on much longer than it should, too. But there’s a killer chorus that sticks with you and could be a showstealer.

Score: 7/10

Edgars: Absolutely the best song that Katrine has brought to Supernova. Sometimes, it seems an artist needs a break-up in their life to improve creativity — just ask Adele! Still, it’s a red light if we’re speaking about this running to Lisbon.

Score: 6/10

katrine lukins supernova 2018 2Lukas: Last year Katrine Lukins stood out – even if she placed last in her semi-final. But this year, she has a much better song and one of my favourites as well. “Running Red Lights is a modern song with a great beat and ultimately is very memorable. A lot will depend on the live performance, but from all the songs in Supernova, this one stands out the most.

Score: 8.5/10

Kristin: If this song came on the radio, I wouldn’t turn down the music…but the volume wouldn’t be pumped up either. This has a nice flow, but it’s a tad forgettable. If Katrina gives an epic performance on stage, that might change though…

Score: 6/10

Bernardo: In a rather weak national final, “Running Red Lights” is definitely a stand out with a strong chance of winning it all. Katrine’s vocals are very good for a recording artist and hopefully, she maintains the strength live. With the right staging this can be the clear winner. The song itself — like many in Supernova — falls in the generic category.

Score: 6.5/10

Natalie: The song starts and you think this could be a really powerful dramatic pop song. But the longer it goes on, it just doesn’t get quite get there. It’s pretty much 100% chorus, and it’s not really even a memorable or catchy one. The tired metaphors get in the way of the music and I still can’t quite grasp what the song is about, or what she even means. You’re on the right track, just have a bit more track, Katrine!

Score: 5/10

This song makes me feel something. Truly, I connect with the lyrics and the music.
It’s difficult to be objective when you feel the song so much. I know she co-wrote this herself, so bravo for that. It’s better than anything I ever wrote. I honestly can’t fault this, technically. 10/10

Low-scoring much? Great-looking singer with relevant, contemporary song that is actually well-written. Running Red Lights *might* just have the best chorus AND pre-chorus in all of Supernova. Absolutely nothing wrong if Latvia decides to send this as long as they really get behind it. I would want some serious money spent on its staging!

Another good song. Modern sound and strong vocals. However, it lacks originality, it’s like I’ve heard this before.

Wow!! So like Pavel got a higher score for Never forget!! Very discretionary!!

This is one of my favourites!! It has got a strong chorus and the first 2 lines are so good too!! A run-of-the mill pop-track? Maybe but it’s done well so it definitely stands out

An 8/10
